Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
You can still get the odd framedrop when driving fast in the Batmobile (at 60fps), but other than that its in a good state today, and is very easy to run too.
You could probably max the game out on a 1060 level gpu at 1440p/30 or 1080/60. When i had my 1080ti it could run the game at max at 4k/30 with room to spare. 1440p/60 too.

Finishing up Suicide Squad's offline mode and it's getting in in the mood to replay the Arkham games, just setting it up.

I already own all 3 Rocksteady Arkham games from some random EGS free drops years ago, and Knight is also on PS+ right now, so just weighing options which is the best way to go about it.

The first game of 2025 clocked. I liked the atmosphere, setting, story, and characters. The gameplay was rather basic, though.

Might move onto Astro Bot next or fire something up on Steam.

I dont think the console versions ever got any 'next gen' updates right?, which would mean 900p (i think it was 900p on PS4), and 30fps with somehting like medium settings. The console versions also looked quite jaggy, at release anyway. If you already own the games on PC you may as well give it a shot and see how it is on your PC.

Correct. PS4 is 1080p/30, didn't even get PS4 Pro update, let alone any new gen patch. IQ is very muddy as the game is very heavy on the post process filtering too.

This would be one hell of a candidate for a current gen patch.

Downloaded the EGS version of AK. Set a custom profile for 1440p/40hz in the Nvidia panel and the game seems to run pretty much locked with all basic (i-e non NVidia Gameworks) settings to High.

Frankly, I'm surprised it's running this good on my ancient 'gaming' laptop connected to a monitor.

Guess this is how I'm playing it.

Yeah its surprising how easy it is to run today, with how bad it was at release.
The game is still a looker too maxed out!.

Yeah, the opening diner has more detail than many games that come out today.

Again, it is mind boggling stupid how this doesn't have an update for newer consoles.

Finished Astrobot. As I said before, its strength lies in the very solid controls and gameplay but the whole fanservice wankfest of references didn't do shit for me, so I was never 100% into it. It made me laugh that they saved Aloy for the very end - HeHu truly believes it is their main franchise. Will give it 7.5 or 8/10 just because I had fun overall.

Played Hell Divers 2 today and I'm starting to sense a pattern where my taste in games doesn't quite align with majority here. The tin-eared aping of Starship Troopers is more annoying than funny and I say that as an absolute fan of Verhoeven and his work. The gameplay is nothing special too even though I like some of the elements that I haven't seen in other games. Will give it another chance once I get to play with my ps5 friends (that are already done with it) during the weekend.

I love horror games and this was only 89p, so why not? it's like watching a really piss-poor horror film on Bravo in the 1990s. Dreadful acting but I think I might have enjoyed it. A few choices to make and a few different outcomes. Just about worth the price, I think.

Case of the Golden Idol - its as good as everyone said. Seems deceptively simple plugging words into sentences but you quickly realize that you're having to really consider each piece of evidence, access points, motive, weapons, capability of each possible suspect, but its all done with such a simple and inviting interface. Its great. The artwork is fantastic when you get used to it. Going to finish this and the DLC then get the sequel.

What time is it?
I spent a bunch of time with Thousand Year Door the past two days and completed chapters 3 & 4 which are both amazing. Rawk Hawk had me laughing out loud and the atmosphere and story beats in Twilight Town were pitch perfect. Yoshi Kid might be one of my favorite party members in any RPG.

Arrived at Ghiza in Indiana Jones. The story is riveting so far. Very exciting stuff. Emmerich Voss is a real creepy dude. Awesome villain. And I like Gina too. Indy and she have a good chemistry and teamwork. In fact, the whole supporting cast has been great so far. But Indy is obvious the best. Troy Baker does a wonderful interpretation of the character.

Tried to find my way in the Risky's Revenge. After all these years I still don't know where to go, so I run aimlessly. Prior to that, I played some Into the Breach (I love this game), and finished a game as Death Prophet in Dota 2. Yesterday, I was replaying SH: Homecoming and got blocked by a game-breaking bug that prevents me from progressing further.

It’s also low-key hilarious and it will get even more funny when all the pieces are coming together.

Incredible game and those are two of its best chapters.

Started playing Curse Of The Golden idol with my girlfriend while hungover after New Years eve. Both of us are really into it and can't wait to keep going (at 6th scene).

I love the "ugly" aesthetic the game has, and the puzzles are really well put together. More challenging that I'd expect and really makes you interrogate your own assumptions.

Also finished NG+ of Steelrising, definitely worth it if you liked the base game. Thanks to significant XP gains, I was able to make all the weapon types viable and play around with them. The elemental stuff is quite fun to use.

Was also able to catch a lot more references to famous events (such as the Tennis Court Oath) having since learned about the revolution. Will be doing one last speedrun of the game to pop the last trophies.

I'm playing through Tomb Raider remastered collection right now. I'm in the middle of TR2. I was getting lost and annoyed with puzzles in TR1 back when I was a kid and now it was a breeze. I remember TR2 had annoying combat and way too much water - and that's still the case.
I'm excited to play TR3 the most because that was my favorite Tomb Raider game.

And it sucks that I can't play with classic graphics and 60 fps.

Finished Asylum, decided to skip City and straight to Knight, which I haven't played fully maybe since it originally came out.

The game holds up incredibly well even today. It's almost a decade old now.

Weird little visual novel with a pretty cool art style. I enjoyed it. Only con was the translation and writing were both a little subpar in certain areas.

Nioh 2
Going back for my third playthrough. This would probably squeeze into my top 10 games of all time. Going with the dual swords this time around.

Tried Nier Automata, but I quit after realizing that if you die during the tutorial, which is quite long, you restart over completely. I think that's a dumb design decision. I hate it when games waste my time. I went nearly an hour, then died fighting the two giant spinning wheels, got stuck between them somehow. When the game started over, I thought I must've missed something, so I looked it up and discovered, no, this was an intentional design choice. I am not going to replay an hour-long tutorial. Fuck that. I know the game is supposed to be great, but I can't stand it when games waste my time like this.

Sniper Elite games and Hitman WoA. Bought them during Steam sale. Been heavily thinking about leaving gaming for good. Gave both of my PS5's away for Xmas. Have no intentions of building another gaming PC after spending over 4k in '23. I've just been so uninterested and disconnected with the hobby for a couple years now. Bought the latest expansion for WoW and didn't even play any of it. 50 years old and been playing since '81. :(

Finally started playing Xenoblade Chronicles 3 earlier today. I loved XBC2 (Hikari <3) and also enjoyed Xenoblade whatever it's called on the Wii, but never finished that because playing anything on the Wii sucked to begin with.

The first hour was a drag. Like obviously I don't want to disable tutorials, because there's probably gonna be some systems I need explained. But then they fucking actually explain to me THREE DIFFERENT TIMES how I level up a character at a camp site. Also they're awfully heavy on the tropes. The whole "school" training thing was a pain to sit through... but then, within the second hour, it goes from like "alright" to "GOTY" within like a 60 minute time frame, 40 minutes of those being basically cutscenes :D

These are basic af spoilers, but just in case:
I love how they've set up the "two parties" meeting, Noah and Mio. Reminded me a bit of Golden Sun almost, which I love. Sure its also somewhat of a cliche to have "unlikely allies" meet in this antagonizing way, but I don't see this too often and I think it was executed rather great in here. Also Mio is a gem, and I'm also taking a liking to the glasses guy. One of the few characters who actually make "boku" work for them.

I'll continue later on, but these couple of rather lengthy cutscenes and change in narrative really made me a lot more excited and hopeful about the rest of the game. This game obviously doesn't win any awards on gameplay or exploration, it's great if you enjoy these type of JRPGs (which I do, a lot), but it's on a rather basic level. So exceeding in writing a story and characters that I actually give a fuck about is kind of what will make or break this game for me.

It's a really bizarre and annoying one off problem the game has, so unbelievably common that nearly everyone has an experience like this. Don't let it dissuade you from playing the rest of the game though, it's a masterpiece.

Thanks for the encouragement. I deleted it, but I will go back and reinstall it, then try again. It did piss me off, but I enjoyed Nier years ago, and I've heard nothing but good things about Automata. So I'll give it another shot. I've heard that it helps to dial it back to easy for the tutorial, to prevent dying, so I'll try that.

I'm starting to get annoyed with Stalker 2. I keep getting crashes just looking in my stash. I thought I was near the end but it keeps going. Only a couple zones I haven't been to yet, so that must mean I'm close. I'm going to start fast tracking story quests and get this done. I have been collecting everything I find usually, and I'm going to be a lot more selective in what I collect now. I just want to get an ending. I have other games I have wanted to play, but won't start them, because if I do, I won't ever finish Stalker. I have to stick to one until it's done.

I have Silent Hill 2 I have been wanting to play and Frostpunk2 I started but then went to Stalker. Also, all the updates to Space Marine 2 I haven't even seen. Plus a billion other games in my backlog.

Never even heard of this. Watched the steam video and will throw it on my wishlist for the next sale.

Going through Elden Ring. Finally beat Margit the Fell after way, way too many hours attempting it. Absolutely loved this fight proving (to me at least) that humanoid bosses are generally the most fun ones to do. Yesterday I did the Ulcerated Tree near the stranded graveyard. Fuck that shit. That's the kind of fight I dread having to deal with.

It's actually a bit tougher than I was expecting; I played the demo for an hour or so, but the full game has turned the difficulty up a notch. Enjoying it, though.

Been playing a lot of Returnal this past week. For having been completely obsessed with this game when it released, I never got around to playing the Ascension DLC, and man it's so good.
After a few years, I still believe Returnal is the definitive PS5 game. As good as Astrobot is (and it's a 10/10), Returnal's gameplay is just so tight and has so much replayability.

Finished. 14 years later, it’s still an incredible experience. The story, about a man who must solve his own murder, pulls you in immediately with its unique premise and quirky characters. The puzzles are cleverly designed, using the game’s core mechanic of manipulating objects and people to change the course of events. It never feels repetitive—each level introduces something fresh. The art style holds up beautifully, with vibrant, expressive character designs and environments. Music is still memorable, perfectly setting the tone for each moment. It’s a game that still feels ahead of its time.

I'll never truly understand the Arkham Knight hate. The Batmobile sucked, but the gameplay otherwise was top notch.

Finally finished FFVII Rebirth. Palette cleansing by playing X-Men Origins on 360. Feels good to just beat the shit out of and dismember people.

Metroid Dread. Perfect example of fiddly controls ruining an otherwise fine game. Dumped it after an hour.
you... what? I don't remember having any issues with the controls of all things in Metroid Dread. This was imo a surprisingly good title, even the EMI worked well. Kinda like Mr X from Resident Evil 2, so freakishly awful/overpowered that they actually force you to go out of your way to avoid them, but worse comes to worst they're also totally doable (like 70%) to parry.

The whole level/game design is maybe a bit basic, kinda like how the devs previously developed for handheld and now they do that with fancy graphics instead. Still, solid 8/10 for a first time run.

It's too bad the controls don't work out for you. It's not like some kind of delay/lag or something?

This weekend its gonna be two games:

Elden Ring - XSX - 18 hours in and I am at the second major boss. Gonna kick his ass this weekend and keep going.

Kingdoms of Amalur - PS4 - trophy cleanup. Almost done hard mode, then I have to grind the DLC. Currently 75% done with the trophies.

I beat the game last year, but can easily see where you are coming from.

Often felt like they jammed 50 actions to 4 button combinations.

City of Khamoon in Tomb Raider Remastered. Despite being able to save anytime, it's still a ball busting experience. Every little mishap can kill you instantly. Doing a jump wrong. Dead. Miss grabbing the ledge. Dead. Encounter a couple of gorilla's and forget to switch to shotgun. Dead. I can't for the life of me figure out how I managed to beat this game when I was a teenager. Not to mention I did it several times. No guides. No cheats. Nothing. Just determination, skill and a lot of patience. I guess it's true that the older you get, the more you suck ass at things.

I double dipped and purchased RE4 remake for the Xbox Series X. Still looks great with ray tracing, hair and resolution option.

Helldivers 2 has pissed me off, so I stopped playing it.

Right now I’m pretty much only playing Black Ops 6 and RE4 on the Xbox Series X.

What time is it?
I just rolled the credits on The Thousand Year Door. I broke the difficulty a bit by doing a large chunk of the 100 floor dungeon early and I love that the Bump Badge exists to accommodate my over leveling. The final chapter drug on a bit too much and was disappointing overall even if I enjoyed the boss encounters. To be fair, it's hard to tie a bow on a sequence of chapters that go: wrestling comedy -> eerie/moody woods with a hex being cast on villagers -> Nintendo's take on Murder On The Orient Express/The Last Express -> Getting fired out of a cannon to the moon. I love this game so much. It made me laugh out loud and smile a ton. The cast is wonderful, the visuals are lovely, and it has that earnestness and positivity mostly found in Nintendo games. Not sure what to play next.
