What game best represents the system?

Which one game, exclusive or not, best represents the console it is on? You are going to have to help me fill in some of the blanks:

Atari 2600/VCS: ?

Nintendo: Super Mario 3 - Gameplay and creativity in spite of the systems limitations. Was the ultimate NES game, as a best seller and best game. Everything from the marketing right down to the pixel work on a goomba was excellent and this shit burned itself into a lot of gamers hearts. For every copy sold, 10 others knew of it or played it. Saturation - in a good way.

Gameboy: Tetris - the pack in, the perfect game for the shitty screen. No other game on the platform topped this

Super Nintendo: Street Fighter 2 - this set the SNES apart from the Genesis in 1992

Sega Master: Rambo Amadeus II - Best game ever

Sega Genesis: Sonic 2 - Everyone had this on Genesis. They were giving it away for free it seems.

Jaguar: Trevor McFur - For me, this was the game that represented the overall mood of the Jaguar as being a subpar 16bit (64 ha!) machine

Game Gear: ??

Sega CD: Sewer Shark - is the first thing that pops to mind. Better games out there, yeah, but this is the first thing I think about when I see a Sega CD

Virtual Boy: Red Alert - First game a lot of us played (and only one after we went cripple and blind)

GameCom: ??

3D0: Crash and Burn - 3d game which did not hold up to the ones that came from Sega and Sony 2 years later. Forever represents how early this 32 bitter came to market and how underpowered it was as a result. While Crash and Burn looked good for a few months, the stuff from Sega and Sony blew it away, and burried it.

Saturn: Virtua Fighter 1 - Buggy 3D graphics but solid, great game. What the Saturn lost in 3D power, it made up for with a really solid library of games

PSX: MGS - the game that for me, really defined what the Playsation line was all about. Nuff said

N64: Goldeneye - I didn't play much of this, but when it came right down to it, this game defined the 64. the 4 player slots, the solid gameplay and popularity probably make more people think of this over Mario and Zelda when they think about the 64.

Lynx: California Games - fun, old school gaming that focused on points. Old School american games that could be a lot of fun if you knew how to avoid the stinkers.

Gameboy Colour: ?

Gameboy Advance: Super Mario Advance 2 - take a great game and retrofit it for maximum profitability. Great system, but there was a lot of recycling. A good chunk of my GBA library are remakes, are yours?

Dreamcast: Jet Set Radio - Creative, good looking and tons of fun. A unique game that really seemed to fit in with what Sega was trying to do with DC

PS2: SotC - A culmination of what Sony was trying to do with the PS2 from the start. Offer grand experiences with high production values and great gameplay. Good narrative and superb music. Just an experience for any gamer to have.

XBOX: Halo - what else could it be? The american FPS with (at the time) super visuals and good core gameplay and strong multiplayer and a good sense of community.

What do you people think?

This sounds like the "games representative of their respective generations" question that was posed a week or so ago, except it's geared toward specific consoles. For that reason, I'd have to disagree with your PS2 choice and pick the GTA series. For GC, I'd probably say Metroid Prime.

EDIT: SSBM isn't a bad choice, either.

PS: FF7

N64: Zelda OOT and Mario 64

Dreamcast: Soul Calibur

PS2: GTA series

Cube: SSB:M

DS: Nintendogs (ughhh)

PSP: GTA:LCS

NES: Super Mario Bros*
Genesis: Sonic The Hedgehog
SNES: A Link To The Past
PSX: Metal Gear Solid
N64: Goldeneye 007
Dreamcast: Soul Caliber
PS2: Grand Theft Auto III
GC: Resident Evil 4
XBX: Halo

*...2, bitches! :D

NES: Mario3 -It was HUUUGE, just like the NES's popularity.

Genesis: EA's Madden or NHL - It was the sports system

SNES: Final Fantasy VI - It was the RPG system

N64:Goldeneye - The greatest party game of it's time. N64 was the party system.

PSone: FFVII - So many people bought one just for this game. Brought in a new era.

Gamecube: Mario Sunshine: Good, but ultimately dissapointing, just like the system. Could have been soooo much more!!!

Xbox: Halo - It's the shooter fan's system

PS2: MGS3 - It's a beautiful game on the oldest hardware. The PS2 does wonders.
EDIT: I totally forgot about GTA3 and I am changing my vote to that.

I don't know if the PSP or the DS has been out long enough to come up with a defining game to appear yet.

Nintendo: Metroid - ahh the atmosphere. This game haunted me as a kid.

Gameboy: Zelda:LA - After playing Zelda III for snes, I thought the gameboy game wouldn't come close. Boy how wrong I ws.

Super Nintendo: FFVI. My first real RPG, and boy was it sweet. I bought this x-mas 1994.

Sega Master: Zillion. Amazing game really.

Sega Genesis: Toe Jam and Earl. THE game for genesis imo.

Saturn: Virtua Fighter 1

PSX: Castlevania:SotN - One of the best games ever.

N64: Zelda OoT - explanation not needed.

Lynx: California Games

Gameboy Colour: Metal Gear

Gameboy Advance: Castlevania CotM.

Dreamcast: SoA - one of the best RPGs ever.

PS2: FFX - I like it more today than I did like 3 years ago.

XBOX: Halo

Gamecube: RE4 - So close a perfect game you can get.

Atari 2600/VCS: Pitfall - made by the first 3rd party ever, it was one of the (if not THE) first side scrollers, showcasing one of the longest and most complex 2600 games for the time, the gameplay holds up better than nearly every other 2600 game if you ask me.

Nintendo: Super Mario 3 - the most sophisticated game at the time for the system, levels filled with secrets under every nook and cranny, lots of stages and such varied enemies, great and innovative powerups like the leaf, tanuki suit, hammer bros suit, and THE SHOE. Probably the first time I totally got caught up in the hype for a game, I remember the hype being massive around the playground.

Gameboy: Pokemon - built from the ground up for the portable, cementing the GB's place in history as the best selling system of all time. Link capabilities for trading with your friends, simple but addictive gameplay, a perfect fit for the system in question.

Super Nintendo: Final Fantasy 6 or Chrono Trigger - it was on the SNES where RPGs broke from the dungeon hacks with simplistic stories from the 8bit era, these 2 serving up some of the finest game storytelling for their time, and still hold up well today.

Sega Master: Phantasy Star - pushed the system to its absolute limits, awesome 3D dungeons and challenging gameplay. I didn't know anybody who owned an SMS and didn't have this game (then again I knew very few SMS owners).

Sega Genesis: Sonic 2 - the game the term 'blast processing' was invented for.

Jaguar: Alien vs Predator - never played this myself but it's probably one of the most popular games on the system. I'll admit to wanting to play Tempest 2000 *VERY* bad though.

Game Gear: Not too sure, possibly Sonic 2 as I remember that being a pack in when I got mine. I was always a sucker for Defenders of Oasis - Middle-Eastern RPG with cool music.

Sega CD: Night Trap - came out at launch I believe, the shitty video and extremely limited gameplay would pretty much define the SEGA CD era.

Turbo Grafx 16: Bonk's Adventure - Although I think the game was more frustrating and not as fun as Mario or Sonic, Bonk was considered the Turbo's mascot.

Turbo CD/Duo: Ys Book 1 and 2 - one of the first console games to feature extensive voice acting, not to mention showed the potential of the CD platform for delivering incredible soundtracks. Probably the most successful and respected Turbo CD/Duo game.

Virtual Boy: Mario Tennis perhaps?

GameCom: LOL

3D0: Total Eclipse, possibly? I remember lots of people making a big deal out of this game.

Saturn: Virtua Fighter 2 - SEGA was a force to be reckoned with in the arcades these days, and this was as excellent a conversion as possiblefor the system.

PSX: FF7 - Gamefan called it "Quite possibly the greatest game ever made", and although it's far from my favorite (hell it's not even one of my top 3 favorite FF games) the amount of fanboys who STILL obsess over and debate about this game probably tops every other game.

N64: Zelda 64 - What Mario 64 pioneered, Zelda 64 refined. Innovative, much copied lock on system, great graphics for the time, and a real alive world.

Lynx: California Games - Never played it on Lynx but the NES version was kinda cool. Don't know much about this system, although a friend and now coworker of mine once had it.

Gameboy Color: Pokemon Gold/Silver for the reasons I listed above.

Gameboy Advance: Super Mario Advance:Super Mario 2 - what the top poster said about recycling holds true... so many SNES era ports, some shitty, some impressive.

Dreamcast: Jet Set Radio - Creative, good looking and tons of fun. A unique game that really seemed to fit in with what Sega was trying to do with DC (copied verbatim from the top poster, I couldn't agree more)

PS2: GTAIII - this is the time period when casuals started to move en mass into gaming, caused a constant stream of mediocre "urban" games and sandbox type games, and yet the game came completely out of nowhere.

Gamecube: Super Smash Bros Melee - the best selling game for the system and IMO one of the best games ever made. If only the GC followed up quality like this.

XBOX: Halo - Basically defined the direction Xbox would take in the next few years - heavy FPS and a focus on Western/PC style game mechanics.

Virtual Boy: Wario Land

Saturn: Panzer Dragoon/KNiGHTS

PSX: MGS

N64: GoldenEye/Ocarina of Time/Mario 64

Gameboy Color: Oracle of Ages/Seasons

Gameboy Advance: Barbie's Horse Adventures simply because it states that most of the Gameboys library is absolute shit.

Dreamcast: Phantasy Star Online - The first major online console game is a winner in my book.

PS2: Killzone/MGS 3/God of War/Random Shitty Game - A library that extends from shitty shovelware which makes up 70 percent of the systems library. Especially during the first couple years. To games which represent Sony's 1st/2nd party incompetence, to games that represent all that is good in modern video games.

XBOX: Halo - Mediocrity hyped to the point where it clouds the players judgement and makes them question their own tastes when they find the game is shallow and cliche. Ninja Gaiden Black. Prince of Persia and Soul Calibur 2 represents how often the XBox versions of multiplatform games are usually the best.

GameCube: Metroid Prime, Resident Evil 4, Wind Waker, REmake, Super Smash Brothers Melee represent even though the system has a small library of mostly unplayable games. The systems A-Squad makes the console more than worth owning and holds its own based on a few spectacular games alone.

NES: Super Mario - First of a kind but not brilliant.
SMS: Sonic 2 - Came afterwards but alot better than the first.
MGD: Streets of Rage - You can't do this on Nintendo
Shinobi - Yeah you could do it on the Master System but not with as many sexy effects.
SAT: Panzer Dragoon Saga - Brilliant, did well in Japan but most of the west didn't "get" it. (In both senses :lol )
PS1: FF7 - Didn't live up to it's own hype, the phrase "not actual graphics" was often used in advertising.
Tekken - Inferior to what Sega was doing at the time, but more popular.
N64: Goemon - Overlooked but also overhyped.
DC: Jet Set Radio - Breath of life to the industry, features ripped off by everyone else to their benefit.
PS2: FIFA - Bought for the name not the games.
FFX - Picked up towards the end.
GC: Kirby's Air Ride - Being made by Nintendo was the only thing that could shift it.
Shadow the Hedgehog - Nintendo wanted the third parties not to be such arseholes.
XB: Halo 2 - Had potential to be great but ruined by trying to please too many people.
PoP: SoT - Very popular in the west, Japan can't understand why.
