What happened to the whole "Saiyans get stronger after getting their ass kicked" thing?

I remember back in the Saiyan and Frieza Saga there was this whole thing where Saiyans are supposed to get a power spike everytime they almost get killed and are healed back up. At least Vegeta kept talking about it throughout the whole saga and that's how they explained his power levels increasing.

But Toriyama dropped that whole thing after the Frieza Saga, I don't think it was ever mentioned another single time for the rest of DBZ.

I mean, it's kind of a lame concept and I can see why he would want to drop it, but I think it's a lot better than all the other dumb unexplained ways of why Goku/Vegata/Gohan just kept getting stronger and stronger. (ie they just "trained", etc)

Uh its pretty much still a thing throughout the entire series even until the last fight of the new series.

It basically encourages people to keep on going even if they are down, failure = road to success. without failure there is no success.

But only if you're one of the Ubermensch, right? Since it only applies to one race which is superior in power to the others. One which becomes blond-haired with blue eyes as they get more powerful. :messenger_fearful:

Toriyama was barely involved with DBZ from what i know and not at all with GT same as Super.
The slide in quality from DB to DBZ is noticeable. They just finished DB manga and had to come up with something so they added shit on top of shit.
Absolutely wrong. He wrote all of Dragon Ball Z minis the filler stuff.

For GT, you're right there. But for super, he gave plot outlines for all of the major arcs.

Pretty sure Cell mentions it when he regenerates. He mentions that he has Saiyan DNA and that it helps him get stronger after almost dying.

I think its called zenkai boost and it seems like those stop happening after a saiyan acheives super saiyan.

I don't think that's what was happening with Goku Black, I think he was just getting used to control mortal ki and Goku's body.

The real answer is that Dragonball is not a well written series. Its fun. Engaging. Exciting. Not well written.

And in case someone avatar quotes me, yes Bleach has garbage writing many times worse. I know.

The real answer is that in order to truly appreciate Dragon Ball you need to personally achieve Super Saiyan God Super Duper Ultimate Kaioken Blue which you, child, clearly have not.

Japan should have issued into law that no anime show could exceed 1 season, and no season could exceed 30 eps, and no ep could exceed 1 hr.

Japan would have just enough time left over to make a proper Berserk adaptation :(

I honestly don'tthink they planned out the dragon ball super world and storyline that much this time around. I always keep thinking if they did a proper reboot and properly created that world they could create an anime that easily surpasses one piece in length.

You can't take it serious. The same for Saint Seiya "your power won't work a second time against a saint". Bullshit.

Power level/power scaling inconsistencies have plagued the series since the beginning, so I'm sure he's forgotten about it sometimes, you just roll with it. I know nostalgia makes some people go, "nah man, it always made sense back in the day!" but it really didn't.

-Piccolo's power level increases to only 400 in the five years between Dragonball and DBZ. Then in a year before the Saiyans arrive, he increases all the way to 3.500. The fuck? Mind you, Goku was training with King Kai, Gohan was having his strength trained for the first time, and Krillin, Tien, and Yamcha were constantly being forced to fight far stronger enemies. Piccolo wasn't doing anything particularly different or unique, and a lot of his time had to be spent sparring with someone weaker than him. And spare me the whole "he was training more seriously" defense, pretty sure he would have training very hard in those five years to kill Goku.

I don't feel like listing every single consistency, or times where Toriyama just handed a character a power-up, but it's always been there. People who criticize GT or Super for this shit but claim DBZ wasn't filled with this as well have some serious nostalgia goggles on.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy DB in every version (well, for GT I really only like Baby Saga, everything else sucked IMHO) but I also acknowledge Toriyama just made shit up all the time when it came to this. People who think he was carefully calculating everyone's level are just fooling themselves. A Youtuber named PlagueofGripes did an awesome 3-part series called Dragonball Gripes, or DBG, where he goes over all of this (granted, his first video is mostly lamenting how much everyone involved with Dragonball seems to hate Tien, but the 2nd and 3rd video are more about the topic on hand).
