What has been your favorite features of the current generation of consoles so far?

Microsoft with FPS Boost on older titles.
I forgot to mention that. Probably because as great as it was, it is bummer they couldn't add more games - I would totally replay stuff like Ryse, Spec Ops: The Line again in 60fps. Even would have given Sunset Overdrive another chance.

The PS Portal, Adaptive Triggers and quick-resume. Don't even need to save your game in case you need to abruptly end your current session.

Also a mention for resolution vs. performance modes.

All 4 have been game-changers for me.

Especially adaptive triggers... after playing a game with good implementation like Astro Bot, anything without it feels very naked. Equivalent to playing on a dual shock with no rumble.

Don't care about haptics and all that stuff.

SSD loading times finally available on consoles is a game changer. I also like how most big games offer performance modes, even if they're poorly optimized and some games look like shit. I will still pick that mode even if the game lacks action.

I had to double take to make sure I wasn't reading my own comment lol

I want the tech from the triggers inside of the sticks next generation that would be super immersive . It would kill the batteries though .

Superfast loading on ps5. Makes dying not so frustrating in a game that loads fast.

Also helps make fast travel actually fast.

All of this! Quick resume is the true next gen game changer.
I think the concept is great but its not been properly implemented. Most games I play seem to have issues with it if it has any online connectivity at all. In some cases its known/suspected to cause instability too. I really wish there was a system, or better yet, per game level option to completely disable it.

You don't fully appreciate SSD load speeds until you're back to using a PS4 and staring at that loading screen for 45 seconds.

  • Everything finally being programmed around SSDs
  • Performance Mode being a standardized feature
Just things being much faster in general has made this a much better generation. You definitely feel it whenever you go back and play an older game, especially the ones that embellished in their long menu animations.

I like the switch for the portable aspect and game library. I do play it docked. I'm aware it doesn't look as good as the other two. But lack of time and money and games I really want (happy with the 1st party on switch and the indies and third party) have make stick with switch.

I was expecting the standardized SSD in PS5 would mean games would be made that were only possible with it. Instead the SSD pretty much just means faster loading, convenience and snappier usage of the console. That is, stuff I already got by putting a SSD in my PS4. PS4 Pro with SSD + PS5 games on PC = abysmally weak motivation to get it.

I think that's the case with most of these Quality Of Life upgrades you really appreciate them when you go back.

I remember when SDTV looked perfectly fine to me until I started watching stuff in HD then it became terrible seeing someone watching low resolution TVs.

Quick resume would have been amazing last gen, but it seems a bit redundant now when I can be in a game within seconds because of the SSD. Some games do load a lot faster than others mind you - FF7:R being one of them - crazy fast.

But there is a difference quick resume you can stop in the middle of a game & go right back to where you left off.

Fast loading and quick resume have been amazing. Although games load fast due to SSD quick resume puts you right back at the precise point where you were without having to start from the last save point.

Also, I also really like when my cloud saves auto automatically sync between my consoles and the cloud. Play a game downstairs and save, load it upstairs and keep going. Play it at home, pick it up when on the road via the cloud.

SSD easily

…And mostly 60fps

Of course PC gets all + Nvidia and is superior in every way these days - even gets better exclusives (warhammer total war 3 for example)

Consoles are low end pc:s without their own flavor now imo - a bit boring

Switch is still unique (but currently 100% emulated on pc too heh)

I think the only real big innovation was the switch to SSDs. I still remember the times it sometimes took even 2 minutes using the "quick" travel option…

Guess I'm alone on this but the PS5 being able to record up to an hour of footage at a time. I upload lots of bossfight videos to Youtube and it is undoubtedly handy not ever having to worry if a lengthy battle is going too long (IE Persona 5).

For me it's Portal & Adaptive Triggers.

Remote Play used to be something that I would test out every once in awhile but never became something that I would actually use for hours a day playing games but Portal pretty much let you forget that you're using Remote Play. You just turn it on login & play .

Adaptive Triggers didn't seem important at 1st but now it feels strange when games don't use them.
Pretty much this. Also, it might be a small feature, but having PS Store integrated into the OS is nice as well.

As for Portal, 90% of my playtime is spent on it, so...

DualSense haptics and it isn't even close. When done right (Returnal, Astrobot, SH2, etc) it increases game immersion X10. I don't even care about the triggers, find it more annoying then anything given my play sessions tend to be hours long, have them off by default. Load times on PS5's SSD is another highlight 👌

Edit: and Performance mode option obviously but that doesn't feel "new" to me as PS4 Pro had it, I remember Nioh being the first game I played that used it, night and day difference.

How easy it is to press Share button and record a clip of what just happened or capture a screenshot.
Speaking of : One day I was doing some off screen recording because I was using the Portal & just thought it would be a quick way of doing so then felt crazy when I hit the share button & remembered that the PS5 is always recording & that I could just go back & few minutes & get that footage 😂

Dualsense in general is a great device. Absolutely marred by the stick drift issues it has. I've gone through 2 controllers in two years. Store them appropriately, don't eat and play at the same time and my kids generally don't touch them. The sticks are made out of wet paper.

Never used quick resume - its all about saving the planet - right?
SSD then I suppose - imagine loading some of this shit off a mechanical 5400 rpm drive?

Yeah, playing the Prey and the last Deus Ex game was so much more, for the lack of a better word, immersive in 60fps.

FWIW I'm using two Edge's in rotation since release, but I game an awful lot with them. And never had any drift issues at all and haven't needed to swap the stick modules. One is 20 months old and the other 16 months.
