What if… Switch 2 has a dock with a disc drive for backwards compatibility?

Assuming Switch 2 will use a dock, would it be a good idea for Nintendo to come out with an optional dock that included a disc drive where you could play Wii and WiiU games? Why or why not?

And if you think it is a good idea, how much extra would you pay to have this dock if the Switch 2 launches at a price of 299?
Ask yourself, what's in it for Nintendo? 0% chance of that happening.

A move that would appear to fly in the face of everything that Nintendo stands for, IDK maybe?

Even if you take away all the other reasons it's a bad business decision, they tried to bury the Wii branding to too much success to even think about dragging it back again.

Not going to happen, they’ll probably be able to port Wii games to Nintendo switch online and keep getting people to subscribe.

Makes no sense. Why would they pass on the opportunity to re-distribute their games again, possibly charging for it again..

I'm not saying it's the right thing to do but, come on. This is a publicly traded company, they're not a community organizing body or something. They are here to make money..

One thing is for sure, Nintendo will do a better job of backward compatibility than Sony EVER did....Sony doesn't care about it's legacy, hence why the mediocre back-catalogue of PS2 games on PS4, as well as limited compatibility on PS5, Motorstorm 1 and 2 on PS5 would have been great..

So Switch 2 is Dr. Evil and It has Mini Me GameCube Discs.

I could live with that.

That would be nice, but they are not reprinting old games… and many places don’t carry old games in new condition (which Nintendo is getting a cut from sales). So there will be no reason for them to make such device.

Makes no sense cause you can’t buy discs anymore for old games. Only in the used game market and that wouldn’t make Nintendo money.

No because it would add more cost in handling repairs, dvd licensing, shipping, as well as confusing the market.

Also not many will have the physical Wii games anyway to justify the cost to produce the drive.

No. BC has only ever been worth it when A, It's easy and B, it facilitates transition to the next generation.

You can play PS1 games on a PS2. PS1, PS2 games are playable on the original PS3. Later gen PS3 you can still play PS1 games but not PS2 games. PS4 deviated from that but PS5 does play PS4 games.
So out of the 5 home consoles Sony released you can could technically own just a PS3 and a PS5 and be able to play the vast majority of the library from the entire history of Playstation with physical discs.

Does an SNES play NES games? No. Does N64 play SNES or NES games? No. Does the Gamecube play N64 games? No. Wii could play GC games but in their revisions they removed the GC controller and memory card ports. Wii U can play Wii games obviously. Does Switch play Wii U games? No (remasters don't count).

So in order to play the physical games from Nintendos' console history, you would need to own a NES, SNES, Wii, Wii U and Switch.

So there have been more generations of PS consoles that can play phyisical games through backwards compatibility than NIntendo.

I don't see a disc drive for BC, but I wouldn't be surprised if there are multiple Switch 2 SKUs.

Nintendo would be VERY wise to put out an actually competitor to the PS5 and XSX.

Something that could upscale Switch and Switch 2 games and was a traditional console with a disc drive.

With Xbox's decline, they have a window to re-enter the market and their games are more popular now than they've ever been before. Partnered with Nvidia, they could put out a console as powerful as PS5 pretty easily for similar cost that has DLSS support.

Wild how anyone could say differently. People just get things in their head and they run with it.

Only Microsoft has done more in terms of BC, but even that should get an asterisks.

No excuse this time for no free Gamecube games on their store. Or cheaply re-packaged and sold with some better resolution.

I'm still amazed Nintendo hasn't gone after Analogue and 8bit-do for 8/16 bit machines and controllers. Doing what Nintendon't.

Aww, how cute. I mean I like the idea. Nintendo already laughing about this idea though. I'd pay $19.99

They’ve gone literally nearly a decade now without a platform with a disc drive. And physical media is dying, and Nintendo has never allowed music or video format discs, only their own proprietary. Like, how does this question even come up? Seriously.

It’s not even a remote possibility. Playing Wii or Wii U discs would require far more than simply an “optional disc drive”, the system itself would have to have internal components that would allow the software to play natively, since if you’re using native media, emulation wouldn’t be what’s driving it.

How do you launch the switch 2 at 299 when the switch oled is still $299.

Gaming’s destiny is digital, it’s been shown time and time again (pc, digital edition ps5, psp go etc.)

Then Nintendo wouldn’t be able to make money off digital sales of legacy games from other publishers. Never going to happen 😂

On Switch 2? Absolutely. They add a new platform every 2-3 years. And they’ve quite clear they intend to keep growing the offerings and adding new services to NSO over time.
Yes that's what I'm thinking.

GameCube is the next logical platform for NSO, but I'm not sure where they go from there. The different control methods means most Wii, DS and 3DS games wold require remakes or remasters rather than straight ports.

You can play all but like 4 PS4 games on PS5
