Would casual gamers perceive it as 'cheap' or 'low tech' or absurd value for money?

Would it push Blu-Ray drive and movie sales through the roof (look at what UMD is doing in a much smaller market segment)

We don't have exact PS3 pricing for components but such pricing really could signal Sony's intention to dominate the market utterly.

Or they may just wait until next gen to try something so outrageous.

In the end it could be a master stroke or the short road to bankruptcy but even in bankruptcy there will be many many suitors to continue the Playstation brand.
