I used to play almost only multiplayer games. Preferably Pvp no matter in which game and very few games with story. I did play the main games back then, but I wish I had missed less story games.

Now it has turned completely and I play almost only games because of the story and quite few mp games.

I used to think gaming was 'my' thing as a kid, that it was the bee's knees, turns out that I was absolutely right and I relish the fact that I can spend so much time gaming, but also be productive enough to be able to finance the hobby in a way that I could never do before.

I didn't see the appeal of Fromsoft games until I played Bloodborne for the first time in 2018.

I also moved on from thinking of gaas as a universally horrible idea to recognizing how it's just some if its common core concepts that ruin it

Never prioritize a woman and her needs instead of video games, video games come first, videogames never cheat on you and stay with you forever. This is my only change :D

But you post on a video game website ?

You're allowed to enjoy yourself you know. Who wants to always be doing something 'constructive' after a long day at work?
Yes, you may. But it is meant as a hobby and being unable to control yourself at times might lead to unhealthy habits. At the end of the day, it's all down to the user and impulse control. That, I am fully aware of.

Not sure if sarcasm or not, but everything in life is a waste of time.

I grew up a Nintendo kid and thought they could do no wrong and no one else could ever touch them.
Then the Gamecube era hit and all the 1st party games were better on the previous generation. Ditto with the WiiU and so on.

Nintendo's best games are all in the NES, SNES, N64 era - they keep rinse and repeating the same stuff - but its no where close the originals they are based on.
Im thinking this might be because Miyamoto himself isnt directly involved anymore.
Ive moved on.
When Im in a Nintendo mood I just stick with the classics.

Elden Ring went from 10/10 best game ever to me not even finishing it. Bosses kept getting more obnoxious, they kept hitting copy/paste and there was entirely too much of it all for my taste.

Quit somewhere in the last 1/4 I assume and have zero interest in playing another Souls formula game any time soon.

Edit: Oops kinda misread the question I think...my bad.

I love gaming. I’m kinda sad when I hear about relationships that fail due to the fascination with gaming or parents who don’t do anything besides gaming.

My favorite games are Souls, retro JRPG, action games, and misc stuff. I finish most of the games I buy and I tend to play through AAA. I’ve finished most of the Greatest Hits games before they got the title. That’s not the problem. My biggest thing is I feel like the last man on earth to play some days. Maybe it’s a weird form of jealously or something else I can’t explain. Everything is online, nothing is a secret in the gaming press, and you’re left enjoying the scraps from another gamer. I use to find that stuff interesting, but it’s all changed. It’s not what I read or what we talk about on GAF. What I’m talking about are the Tweets or YouTube videos overly exploiting a game. It’s lame.

Before 2015 "Turn-based combat sucks ass"
Before 2015 "Isometric games are best left where they belong, in the distant past"

After 2015 and having played Shadowrun Dragonfall DC: "Wow, turns out I love it! 😍"

I used to say I love the JRPG genre at large, but then I realized I just like Squaresoft games and practically nothing else in that genre.

Actually on topic...

I used to refuse to play online multiplayer. I was single player only since trying maybe Unreal Tournament?

Got talked into Hunt: Showdown because I loved the aesthetics and everything and now it's my most-played game of all time. With party chat and an actual regular team, this shit is peak video games to me now and it's sometimes hard not to be bored by anything else.

To be fair to you, the genre was pretty terrible during the PS1 era and hadn't fully developed itself yet. PS1 had what? Syphon Filter and Medievil? Winback? These games all had extremely frustrating camera controls back then. Also, mostly due to technical limitations, the camera was super-duper close to the player making it even more difficult to maneuver.
yup, I'm quite sure you've hit the nail on the head there, im sure i disliked it for those reasons.

Though I loved syphon filter. That taser!

I used to like them long, meaty and hard. The games.

Now that I can only play a couple hours a day at most, I prefer them short and sweet so I can actually play them through before I get bored. I also tend to play Normal difficulty or lower so I don't get stuck too often.

I'm about to finish Final Fantasy XVI after 44h. Back in the time I'd have thought this was a meager playtime for a FF and I would have basically felt gipped. Now I think it's overstayed its welcome.

I still bought BG3 though.

I used to love Xbox (the OG Xbox) as a fan of Sega, the OG Xbox was the next dreamcast, but even better. Then i won a PS2 in a contest, that introduced me to a variety of new IPs and crazy games i never imagined it was my thing.

I used to hate 100% of First Person Shooters, now i only hate 90%.

Souls/Soulsborne games.

I've told this story way too many times, but when Demon's Souls dropped on PS3, I was working at a dev studio as a QA tester for the first time. The QA head told me about the game and that he thought it'd be up my alley. I went with him during lunch to nab a copy while he got his. When I got home and played it, I couldn't get into it. It really didn't help being a QA tester for the first time for a few months, there were so many things that were red flags to me, lol. It just didn't click.

Years pass, I still give the games a shot because I love the art, the music, the aesthetic, the clear influences from Berserk. But nothing clicks. Fast forward to the launch of the PS5. Not long after its launch I was gifted a PS5, and didn't bad an eye at getting Demon's Souls Remake. I thought it looked absolutely beautiful, and even after all this time, I still didn't want to give up on the games. So I gave it a shot.

It was at that point it clicked, and in a big bad way. As soon as I was done, I went back to Dark Souls, beat it. Went to III, beat it, went to II, beat it. Played Sekiro, beat it. Then Bloodborne. I was able to do all of that before the launch of Elden Ring and it was perfect. I love/loved that game so much.

I think a lot of it may have to do with me aging and having a new perspective on patience and rewarding gameplay. I don't know, all I know is that I get it now, and I'm all about it.

60fps or nothing. In my teens, I used to think frame drops were intentional to add drama, then I got into PC gaming and wised up.

I went from a die-hard, xbox only (and nintendo handhelds) halo fanboy to practically despising the franchise and switching to pc and ps4.

Thanks for killing my favorite series, 343

I used to have a low opinion of Sony Thought all their controllers on PS1, PS2 and PS3 sucked. When I heard the Dual Shock 4 had improved ergonomics I was cautious but eventually took the leap of buying a PS4 over an XB1. Turns out DS4 was great and the Dual Sense was even better and I now have a very positive opinion of Sony. PS4 and PS5 have been my main consoles, the last 2 generations

Story was more important than gameplay. I'd say a 10/10 story accounts for 30% of a good game, but I'd rather play a game with a shitty story and great gameplay than a game with a great story and shitty gameplay. I think Hades was when it finally clicked for me that gameplay is king because I kind of was a slave to the "third person cinematic" games for a while.

I initially was misled by the hate train for Cyberpunk.

The game was fucking epic and had fewer bugs than the least buggy Bethesda games.
I don't really understand them, the bugs were fixed but they haven't changed their opinion about it, hyping for a genre from a studio with no prior experience to it is actually a sign of stupidity, the internet is filled with these guys.

After the first few hours of hollow knight I hated it and got super triggered whenever anyone said "best metroidvania ever". Then eventually played the game to completion and now I agree with them.

"online gaming sucks"

Even though it was a one-time thing, WoW showed me that online gaming can actually be a really great experience. I mean, no game since has been able to replicate the experience of Vanilla WoW - WotLK but man, that experience was magical.

Yes several.

Notably on Dark Souls. The 2 first time I tried (at a friend's place because it was month of them speaking about this game constantly) I was like "Meehh. No my type of game". Still I bought to try it alone (and because my friends were speaking about it with such passion that I had to try again). Then here it becomes my favorite game of all time.

Sekiro : Shadows die twice is probably my biggest change of opinion. Play it on release. Didn't really like the "forced build" and found the combat relying too much on deflect, farming to use tools was annoying and overall didn't get grab by the story. I still forced myself to finish it but it was a pain at the end. For years I regarded it like the worst FromSoft game.
Then last year, some friends (the Dark Souls friend) starting to talk about it. One played it on release and loved it and the other was just starting to play it. The first friend started another playthrough to play along the second one.
So I decided to do the same to see if my opinion changed. And it did.
While there is still some "problems" in the gameplay loop (I still maintain you can do the game just by using deflect and tools/combat art are completely optional), when you want to play for the style it's a wonder. I had so much fun mixing tools and combat art in those boss fights. Did 3 runs (NG, NG+ and NG++ with bell and no charm) in a row for the platinum and all endings. Plenty on time on the boss rush. Story is really good and the endings are masterpiece.
I'll go back to it with pleasure now.

I used to think collector's editions were really dumb, but nowadays I actually really enjoy the effort put into good physical releases.

Mind, I don't like stuff like big statues/figures, character cards, etc. but rather artbooks, music, and above all, a Steelbook with nice art on it. I think it really ties into the fact that when I was younger, I prioritised optimizing and maximizing my time when playing games. Being a bit older, It's now much more about how much I enjoy my time with the game and making it memorable. For that, there's nothing better than cracking open a fresh box and inserting a disc/card. And tying the memories of a great game to a nice looking Steelbook case.

I only indulge myself with all this for games I'm really into/looking forward to. Keeps the ritual special, the house free from being a hoarding hellhole, and the finances intact. Triple win.

A less esoteric example; I was somewhat disappointed with Dark Souls 2 on release. I liked it, but it didn't feel like a proper sequel to Dark Souls 1. The change in feel, mechanics, graphics, etc. felt like a step down, but I was always keen on revisiting it. Finally did so with Scholar of the First Sin on PS4 (having played DS3, Bloodborne, Sekiro) and now I absolutely love it. Rather than being a step down, it's a step to the side. It's the weird middle child of the Souls family and its absolutely adorable. I'm glad DS3 went back to a more OG DS feel, but I would never want DS2 to change. Incidentally the only game of the Dark Souls series I've got the platinum for, but hoping to go back for the others one day as well ... If only there weren't way too many good games coming out all the damn time.
