It plays PS3 games, PSone games, PS2 games, acts as a storage hub for my PSP games, plays DVDs, Blu Rays, MP3s, and streams video services. All of these features are regular activities for the machine. So yes, it really does do everything, and is possibly the greatest, most used games console I've ever owned.
I bought a PS3 slim from my boss about a year ago and it has been collecting dust ever since. It's my first Sony console but it just never grew on me. I don't like the dualshock controller at all and the few games I bought were kinda meh.
462GB left on my 1TB drive already and I still have a few more things not downloaded.
I would have gone fully digital if it wasn't for this and the stupid prices they have on the games compared to physical. (My MGS4 PS3 was stolen along with my whole gaming collection back in March 2011, so)
It's gotten more use since I started playing online games less and less and could no longer justify paying for XBL. I buy anything with any kind of online mode (that I might actually play) for PS3 now. Last game I bought was Anarchy Reigns, and the next will be the Deadly Premonition remake next month and Ketsui in July. Then The Last Guardian.
it seems like a lot of people have stopped picking up as many new titles as they used to and are instead riding out the storm until the new hardware hits.
same as it was 5 years ago, I can't see any gamer who owns one ignoring the games coming out for it, if you are I'd question if you are gamer at all
same with 360....well kinda
For most of this gen I was wii+PC... so as of last week it's my brand new end of gen pick up. I've already spent more on games than I did on the console, so it'll be my game machine for many years to come.
I love being able to stream media from my PC though, so there's that.
Video game player, streaming videos from my PC, Youtube (the app actually is pretty decent but the search feature leaves a lot to be desired as well as lack of channels).
There were times when I would have used it to play music, stream video, watch Netflix, play PS1/PS2, use PSP remote pay for headphone tunes around my house, etc. And it was my only HD twin, too.
But now I have a pretty killer setup where I also have a PC and PS2 connected to an XRGB mini upscaler... and an Xbox 360 too.. a smartphone.... so the PS3 has been demoted to "just PS3 games".
Yes. Already bought Ni No Kuni, Metal Gear Rising and Tomb Raider this year.
And I'll be getting a lot more games for it in the coming days and months:
Bioshock Infinite
Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen
Tales of Xillia
The Last of Us
Saints Row 4
GTA V
South Park: The Stick of Truth
Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII
Killer is Dead
This is shaping up to be a very good final year for my PS3 as my main console.
On a more serious note, my PS3 is the Borderland2box I drag over to a friends house to watch some videos and, guess what, play some Borderlands 2 local CoOp.
Other than that, it's my PS+ download-and-try box. And my Bluray player in case VLC isn't up to the job (stupid shitty DRM). Also, obviously, one of my gaming consoles. For playing videogames. Which I do.
To be honest, not much has changed since I got the system.
My primary gaming console on which I play many video games. I'm having difficulty deciding which games to pick up in the coming months while still balancing my budget and saving for a PS4.
Primary games machine. Only used it for blurays for a year or two. As for multiplatform (PC) games, I only get the PC version if the PS3 is a bad port or it's significantly better on the PC.
For years it was only a bluray machine.
Then for 1 month it was an Uncharted machine and rite now it is a Ni No Kuni machine. (Best jrpg i played in recently)
After i have finished Ni No Kuni it might become a Heavy rain Machine.
Video games and blurays, the same as it always has been really. I prefer to play my third party gazmes on the 360, so usually exclusives and games ps plus wings at at me, and it is our bluray player in the living room.
