Having lived in Japan for the past four years, I feel like the article in question is putting words into a lot of Japanese womens' mouths. (Oral joke in 3...2...1....)
From talking to my coworkers (mostly unmarried women in their late twenties) I get the impression that they don't want to give up their lifestyle for a man. Any man. Of any race.
Contrary to popular belief, it has very little to do with dick. Tuck it back in, guys.
Think about it: In Japan, kids can live with mommy and daddy indefinitely. Indefinitely. That means that some of these girls grow up, go to school, get jobs, make money, and still live at home. Their moms make their lunches, clean their clothes, clean their rooms, and occasionally provide an allowance. These are women pushing thirty, with disposable income, a free place to live, and no one to hold them down. They go shopping, they go on trips with friends. They've got it good. Hell, I've got a friend who is pushing 40, living at home, aerobics instructor. Sure, she wants dates, but to hell with getting married.
When I tell my coworkers that I vaccuum, do the dishes, do laundry, etc. They're shocked. "Western husbands help? Cooooooool." I think they just want to meet a man who isn't a complete controlling bastard.
Here's how it used to work in Japan: A young couple would get married. The husband would get a job, and his role was complete. He would provide. The wife would have the baby, raise the child, and take care of the house. That was her role. Just as a wife would never do her husband's job, Japanese men felt they should never have to do their wife's job. The kids grow up, go to school. The mother is responsible for education. The father works. The kids graduate. The wife finds some hobby to participate in. The husband retires, comes home for good, and expects his wife to take care of him into their golden years. So the wife has another child to take care of, essentially. Sucks to be her. I can't imagine why Japanese women would prefer that to being able to go to onsen with their friends.
Japanese women are living Sex in the City. Why would they give that up for Leave It To Beaver?
