what jrpg are you playing right now ?

Playing bravely secong. Really addicting gameplay.
i wish more turn based jrpgs just stole/copy these 2 mechanics from this and TWEWY: Ability to alter encounter rates and the ability to gamble and link battles for more exp.

This is the most accurate review of Vagrant Story.

http://www.somethingawful.com/game-reviews/vagrant-story-psx/1

This, the first wretched spawn of Final Fantasy 8's interface, is created by people from the anal-retentive school of RPGing. Not only do you "get" to micromanage every aspect of your weapons and armor, but the damn things actually change on you the more you use them. I remember the days when a sword made of ice beat a creature that was on fire, and shooting a fish with lightning would kill it faster than just hacking at it. Now I have to worry about the weapon's "affinity", and since different weapons have largely different effects on different enemies, I can only assume Square wants me to re-equip every time I fight a new enemy. If they seriously think I'm going to do that then they're as crazy as the critics who gave this piece of shit 9's and 10's.

Nothing makes me feel more inadequate than managing to pull off a three hit combo that takes a devastating 8 HP from my opponent. Politely asking the monster to run into a wall would cause more damage. I play these games at least partly for escapism, and I don't want to be reminded that I'm barely strong enough to lift my Playstation controller.

For extra fun and detail the game includes a "risk" meter, which apparently measures how drunk off his ass your character is. Once the risk number gets above five he can't hit the broad side of a behemoth (and even if he did, it probably wouldn't do any damage).

And then there's the gorgeous weapon system. It's set up so that your weapon gets more powerful the more you use it, and when you get a new weapon it's a complete piece of shit. So what happens is you keep your old weapon that you have some experience with and just leave all the new weapons you find in your backpack or your ass, wherever you're keeping them. This system is taken directly from Secret of Evermore, which was developed by Square of America. When the real Square developers start ripping off the team that was started as a cruel Japanese joke, we're all surely fucked.

The fact that the characters can move their mouths only accentuates the fact that absolutely nothing is coming out. The result is a mime show with word balloons.

They do seriously think you will equip different weapons when you fight different enemies. Does anything more need to be said than that? Once you understand the confusing weapon mechanics, there isn't much challenge, it becomes just very tedious.

How does Lunar 2 compare to the first game? Better? Equal? Worse?

Opinions are divided. I like the 1st more but 2 is still good and worth playing.

Man, after reading many impressions on I am Setsuna on this thread, I'm kind of glad SE didn't bring over the Vita version or gave the PS4 one a reasonable price. It sounds super unremarkable, and in a genre like this I really don't have time for stuff below "good".

As for me I've been playing Darkest Dungeon on Vita/PS4. It's not really japanese but it's turn based and has great combat, it's secretly one of the best games released this year IMO.

I've played a bit of Dragon Ball Fusions on 3DS as well and it's pretty good! Combat is DBZ crazy but a bit too easy for my taste.

Just finished FFXV, still have few end game things to do but I think I mostly done with it until DLC comes out.

Thinking about giving the XIII series a playthrough. I only played through the first one and that was back when it first came out. Is it worth playing?

I actually liked the main story line in the first one more, but I was enthralled in both of them. Replayed both back to back last year and still came away from with that opinion. They are not long games at all, with 2 still being in that 20-30 hour range

It's no Chrono Trigger, but it is a good game. You can tell it's a budget title, but the gameplay is fun and the unified aesthetic and music works well for the game. Way, way better than Square's other budget release this year, Star Ocean 5. It's worth playing through for sure.

Playing FFXV, it's reminding me of both Xenoblade Chronicles X and The last Story... And to be honest I think I would rather be playing either of those than this. Only five hours in though, here's hoping.

Playing FFXV and just made it to the infamous chapter 13. Gonna
head back into Lucis the first opportunity I get to wrap up sidequests before progressing
.

No. XIII gets all of the hate it does for a reason. I kept hearing "it gets better". It doesnt

Post-game dungeoneering in XV. Having a blast with the battle system in the higher lvl encounters.

Next on my list is X remaster then P5.

My friend got all hyped over FFXV which only served to remind me I have Xenoblade Chronicles X to get back to. So I did.

I'm constantly in awe at the environments in this game. Amazing and beautiful.

Done with basically all the trophies in FF XV
Just need to max out Survival, Fishing and Cooking skills for the platinum

What's the best way to do those?

I recently restarted Xenoblade X. (Only had 48hours on the file and no flight module)

God the ground combat in this game before it gets busted by overdrive shenanigans is amazing.

I honestly think it could have been the best JRPG combat system if not for the skells and overdrive ruining the balance after a point. There's a limit to party system action based combat that this game suffers from though and it's hit detection and intention. Action JRPGs starring more than one person just have a hard time telling you which character the attack is locked on to. It gets worse with bigger enemies, and TLS as well as FFXV suffers from this problem to a degree.

Nier Automata is going to be something to keep an eye on.

Xenoblade's 3 person I feel hits the best balance.

Soul Blazer was awesome, really cool expansion of LTTP style gameplay. Definitely worth checking out.

I'm powering through Persona 3 Portable. I think I'm going to end up in the camp of people who like it better than 4. The psychological stuff was better in 4, but I'm liking 3's scenario, plot and characters better.

Also, I'm starting to think that the Vita is the GOAT jrpg machine right now. With all that BC I feel like I could keep mining its library for years.

Bought FFXIV Online (steam) and FFXV Deluxe Edition (ps4). Will start tomorrow though (since my finals will end tomorrow). I also have to finish WoFF (vita) and DQ7 (3ds) after which I'm planning to start Trails in the Sky SC.

That's enough rpg that if you might finish it all if you don't sleep between now and July.

I keep reading about Xenoblade X in this thread and I desperately want to love this game. I'm not a JRPG noob, but for the life of me I can't figure out how to progress in this game. It wants me to survey 15% of the map and I just can't figure it out.

I've tried putting up as many probes as I can, but now I can't find any areas with beacons or at least none where I don't get killed by enemies way above my level.

I don't fully understand the quest mechanics. Should I just go back to town and talk to every possible NPC? Will I get a quest marker on the map, and will clearing the quest improve my survey rate?

Someone please help. I want to love this game.

Just as an aside, since a lot of folks are mentioning that they wish Matsuno would make a new game... He actually is. And it's a Strategy RPG!

... For phones, and real-time, but still :P! More information here: http://www.siliconera.com/2016/08/2...egy-game-lost-order-developed-platinum-games/

Back on topic: Been replaying FFX and FF:Tactics after platinuming FFXV left a bad taste in my mouth. Both awesome games.

Also playing through the original Shadow Hearts for the first time. Super fun - I adore 'active' RPG combat (Paper and normal Mario RPG style), so the ring system is great.

The game sometimes expects you to just sprint past enemies that will squish you, so that's really all there is to it. You'll even get some mainline quests that ask you to kill enemies that are your level, but surrounded by dudes that will one shot you, etc (because that's good game design? I honestly have nfi what they were thinking).

You can probably tell I wasn't a huge fan of the 100 hours I put into that game to finish the story :P

So then to get to 15% I need to sprint past enemies and just install probes? That's all?

I thought it was Game Design 101 to put OP enemies in areas to gate your progress. A more subtle way of saying "don't go here yet."

FF6, such a huge improvement over 5 in every aspect. Only the ridiculous RE rate is a bit frustrating, but besides that it's as amazing as I expected it to be.

Also continued with Ys: OIF. .Played almost the entire Ice Cave without realizing you should go and find the stone shoes first, then I got stuck at the
Ice Dragon
and was close to throwing my PSP against a wall..until I realized I can simply warp back to town and buy better equipment. Man I'm really not the sharpest tool in the shed.

Trying to decide which of the following to play next:

Vagrant Story - best game ever, too bad the gameplay was apparently too complicated for most people. Also boxes..looots of boxes..for no apparent reason whatsoever.
Soul Blazer - not as good as Terranigma, but close
Lunar 2 - haven't played that one yet
Xenosaga Episode I - I loved the entire Saga..but It's easy to see why others don't
Skies of Arcadia Legends - Loved it on the DC, seeing as this is supposedly even better, a must play.
Crisis Core - meh

.

VS and Xenosaga Ep 1 both have pretty great stories, but really obtuse game mechanics that aren't really that fun even when you understand them.

? Both are a ton of fun if you 'get' them

Maybe. I completed Xenosaga Ep 1 last month and felt mostly frustrated once I got it because of how limited Skill Points and Currency are in the game.

End game was mostly just me spamming X-Buster every encounter lol

As for VS it's been ages since I've played, but the amount of times I remember having to go in and out of menus keeps me from wanting to revisit it.

I've decided to play Parasite Eve instead of any of the games I mentioned in my post since it isn't supposed to be very long. I started playing Lunar 2 but just wasn't feeling it at the time. I have Vagrant Story on my Vita, so there's a good chance I'll be playing it on my flight home for the holidays. Xenosaga will have to wait until after the holidays.

Just after after beating FF XV, i'm grabbed FF IV for the 30th anniversary (then i will play the others)

It made me realize how good classic FF games are. Hope XVI will be turn based or like Grandia 2.

Maybe it's just my appreciation for games trying something different than the attack/defend/item/magic approach. It's so much fun to learn the intricacies of a seemingly complicated or obtuse battle system. Especially in a genre that makes you battle enemies every other step. Like Xenosaga 2..man that shit was amazing. I was so pissed that they went back to more traditional mechanics in the third.

Kind of late but the survey percentage is based on clearing the icons in your FrontierNav map. Every icon represents a particular goal you need in order to consider that particular segment "cleared". The probe icon obviously means you need to set a probe in that segment. The beast icon means there's a specific tyrant you need to beat. The sparkle icon means there's a specific treasure box you need to open. The paper icon means there's a particular normal mission (NPC given) and the grasping hands icon means there's a specific affinity mission.

You can get more details about what the specific requirements are by happening upon NPC gossip while running around town (yellow bubbles from unnamed NPCs) - you'll get a "segment info updated" message when that happens and the relevant segment will have a (IIRC) exclamation mark over it so you can see the updated requirements. Either that or use a guide lol.

As for quests, there are 4 types - basic, normal, story, and affinity. Basic quests are from the quest board and you can safely ignore those with the exception of the two "Backup Request" missions the and "Marry Me" mission. They're just ways to gain some extra EXP/money/gear but have no story to them. Normal missions are those given out by named NPCs. They will have an exclamation mark over their heads and that will also show up on the mini map. The vast majority of normal missions start in NLA but there are a few that will be given by NPCs out in the world so keep your eyes peeled while exploring. Affinity missions are accepted by checking the floating affinity icons - it's a good idea to save before accepting one because you can't cancel one once you've accepted it. And again, completing specific normal and affinity missions will add to your survey percentage.

For mission completion tips, the Follow Ball will work for any mission where you need to get to a specific place. If it's a enemy drop material you need and don't have, you can trade for things with Reward Tickets using the online terminal in the Barracks. If it's a collectible, just find one of the drop table maps online to figure out where the highest drop rates are and if there are specific time of day requirements.

As far as avoiding enemies above your level, you can try switching to Elma as the playable character. Lock on to an enemy, use her Shadowrunner art, disengage, and run past the enemies without aggroing them. Rinse and repeat as necessary. (Can combine this with Blood Sacrifice so you never need to worry about the TP cost for Shadowrunner)

Hope that helps.

Switching back and forth between Exist Archive (still in the chapter 6 crystal hunt) and FFXV (wrapping up sidequests before finishing chapter 13). Kinda slow parts of both games...

Currently I'm playing through:

Wildarmscase.jpg

Wild Arms on the PSX

I've always liked the tool system in this game. but I never got very far when it first came out way back when. I've put in about 15 hours so far and I'm enjoying it. Many of the mechanics on these old games don't really stand up to the test of time, so I've cheated slightly by buffing my characters a bit.

250px-OgreBattle64.jpg

Ogre Battle 64 on N64

Man, this game is so awesome. I just wish emulators could run it better, but I've been able to play it with the few graphical glitches.

This game really was so awesome when it came out. it saddens me that there hasn't been any sort of sequel or continuation to this series. Tactics Ogre remake gave me hope, but doesn't seem to be any word on more remakes coming. I feel like I've heard something about a mobile game, but it's better if we don't discuss those.

OB64 in particular had great art and I loved the capturing and recruiting aspect. You could really make some diverse teams, even if the balance was kind of crappy. This is another one I didn't manage to finish back in the day, but I'm making progress.

Recieved Dragon Quest VII for Xmas so I've been playing that, only two hours so far though.

Hillariously in those two hours I've yet to even fight a single battle.

I am doing a 100% play-through of the Xenosaga Trilogy. Currently about halfway through the first game and I love it, the cast is fantastic and the music is soooo good.

I played the games when they came out and wanted to play them again after reading some mentions about the game in my twitter during PSX (no remasters make me sad :().

I started Xenosaga too... never beat the last boss in Xenogears because i didn't want it to end, and i decided it's time to move on. Played about seven or eight hours, and good lord the game is at least 60% cutscene! Not complaining, i love everything about it. Love the combat system and all the zeros in the combat results screen. LOVE the UMN thing theme, amazing example of early 2000's sci fi space electro whatever it is, love it. Reminds me of another song from Haruhi that also really captures the feeling of that decade's japanese sci fi.

I started playing Fairy Fencer after the Steam sale. It's pretty good, surprisingly. I've shit on Compile Heart games for years, but I'm liking it a lot. I just got to the point where
they reset the timeline and it's literally you replaying the same first ten hours of the game over again
though. I'd probably care more if it took longer than five minutes to get through them.

The power rangers theme is Blue Dragon tier of amazing.

Two-thirds of the way through Chrono Trigger DS. I had played it a few hours before, but this is my first time playing through it. It's pretty good. Strip away the nostalgia and I'm not sure it's anything special though.

After an extended break, I finally got some momentum and made it to the final chapter of Trails in the Sky SC. Hopefully I'll be able to finish that up in the next couple days. Now I need to find something to play between now and when Dragon Quest VIII comes out.
