what jrpg are you playing right now ?

Working through Star Ocean 5 now...I've hit a point where the game has opened up for me, so I'm working through quests and item creation. Not as engaging as 2 or 3, but still a solid game overall.

Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete, I've heard it is pretty good. Got it from a second hand shop for $60. So far, I'm enjoying the charm of the English voice acting.

Made it to Alltrades Abbey in DQVI! Anyone know some good vocation paths for each character to easily steamroll through the game?

I've finally picked up my Skies of Arcadia play-thru on Dreamcast recently, and am falling in love with the game all over again. Recently finished Moonstone Mountain in Ixa'Takan, and now I'm off to find the lost city of Rixis!

The game looks so damn clean on my Bravia using a VGA box too. Don't think I've ever seen this game looking so sharp and clear. This game really just impresses me so much with it's ambition, the shear breadth of the world still feels so incredible. The main cast feel like old friends, these characters are just so damn likable. Airship battles are so much more cinematic than I recall. I was taken aback by how impressive they looked. The camera angles and framing looks fantastic, even today.
Hard ta fall outta love with it despite the games flaws here an there! Finished replaying it about a month ago myself an had hardly a frustrating moment! Used VGA as well an ya it looks nice even on my crappy old hdtv!

I just did Wiseman section in Mutation.

I had to go at the end of a dungeon to meet him. Then do another dungeon to get an item for him. Then go all the way to the old dungeon to meet him again.

If this is not padding, I don't know what it is.
Ya I'd say that was padding. Shoulda just been able ta meet him in a town but apparently everybody playing the game does their business deep inside of dungeons for some reason >_> Can't wait ta go through Tarvos' dungeon (irrc?) in the last game 3 times x.x

This. I knew I would like it, but I'm surprised by how much fun it has been. I really like the battle mechanics and the constant upgrades. Keeps things interesting.

Man I really want to try #FE but I can't possibly buy a console game without Off TV play, it's a deal breaker for me. Freaking bummer , hopefully Persona 5 comes to Vita...

Is Adventures of Mana good? I need an jrpg with a good story and satisfying combat in my life right now.. Either PS4 or a Vita-game.

It's simple since it's a remake of an early 90's GB game.

It will fill up your Zelda SNES/GB cravings for sure though.

I just want Digimonstory Cybersleuth to END..... I love it and its probably going to be on my top 10 but I'm done. I'm almost at the end and I thought about grinding up some digimon to their final forms but I'm over 70 hours. I tough about working on LadyDevimon to get her INT to 250 so she can evolve into...whatever the 3rd option is but I'm not seeing that happening.

I'll probably get around to it eventually, but for now I just beat it as Hugo and am satisfied.

Currently I am about an hour in to a few games: Baten Kaitos, Skies of Arcadia, Trails in the Sky SC, Shadow Hearts: Covenant.

Not sure if I want to continue one of those or play something else.

How could anyone stop an hour in to Shadow Hearts: Covenant after that intro. Blew me away when I saw it.

Have you played Trails in the Sky on Vita?

Trails in the Sky does not meet the satisfying combat requirement. loved FC so much back then. stopped playing SC despite being deathly hyped for it because combat was ass. now that I think about it, I have no idea how I managed to finish FC.

Do PS1 JRPGs count for Vita?

It's obviously going to be an amazing game and I loved the first game. I just started it immediately after the first and was a bit burnt out.

Ah fair enough.

...I feel the same way honestly. Bought SC day one, I got about 20 hours in and it felt like pulling teeth every step of the way. Not even charming characters were enough to keep me invested in continuing.

You're drunk! The combat system is one of the best in the JRPG genre. It has the two main essentials: pre-combat setup and actual in-combat execution. The Orbital system is deep and complex and pretty important to have a good setup before battle even starts, but even if you do - strategic planning in the actual battle itself is very strategic.

Now if you're complaining that its ass because it's slow... then I agree. Games like Bravely Default/Second have spoiled me rotten. This game desperately needs a speed up option or hack to speed up the flow of battle. I usually have a web browser open for waiting through long turns when the enemies get like 5 moves in a row. It's not FFIX levels of slow... but yeah, it's slow.

For bonus points: tell me a JRPG combat system you enjoy more.
Acceptable answers are: Xenoblade, Persona, and Radiant Historia....

it's straight up boring. shit's way too easy. granted I like breaking shit in Bravely series but it's actually fun doing that there. TitS has boring combat on wholesale.

oh yeah it's boring AND slow. terrible combination :(

to your spoiler: yes, fuck no (mainline Press Turn, whatever it is in Devil Survivor, and #FE is way more fun than that One More shit), YES

fake edit: Etrian Odyssey combat is fantastic too. my fave

Resonance of Fate
Natural Doctrine (SRPG)
Tales of Vesperia/Graces f
FF XIII trilogy
Atelier Escha & Logy

I am sure I am forgetting a lot of other games lol

Regarding Trails, the combat only gets better. In FC you're low level and your options are more limited. Each game then expands your available options, but the combat is still slow.

Fair enough, I can accept that Trails combat is boring, because it's slow. I really think that if it was sped up, it would really improve. I disagree about it being easy however. The game is plenty challenging on Normal and there is a Hard mode too. My biggest complaint is that the enemies tend to be damage sponges, especially the bosses. It becomes a war of attrition, which is enjoyable in a different way because you get down to item and MP management and character/enemy spacing, and buff/debuff more than you do in other JRPGs.
Again it would all be better if animations were quicker.

I really want to give #FE a try because of the combat system, maybe I will someday. I enjoyed Eterian Oddssey as well. I only ever owned EOIV but my save file corrupted at 30 hours and never finished.

... How about Parasite Eve on PS1? That combat system holds up surprisingly well and it's alot of fun.

There's different difficulty levels in Tits. I played it for 2 hours and thought it was too boring and easy. Then I restarted it on hard. Now it's better.

I don't even know what level I'm playing it on, I think Normal. It gives me a good run for my money. If I'm being careless I can get rocked by trash mobs. But bosses and extermination monsters require careful pre battle planning and then good in battle strategy.

I think everything about it is great outside of the slow slow animation speeds. I would rank it very very high for a strategic JPRG combat system.

... Again I'm talking about Trails SC, where you do get much much more combat choices earlier than First Chapter. It's a slow burn before you start getting lots of Orbs to make combinations with and really get into the Arts system.

in the backlog. haven't played yet but want to. I'll have to move the PS3 because I don't use my Vita for games.

doesn't really matter but I do like some not-so-good combat systems like Fate/Extra. almost no one likes the combat in that game but I do >_>

I know, I played FC on hard because back then I didn't have a backlog so I could really sink my teeth in a game one at a time. only the final dungeon was any good in testing me.

SC on normal. don't got time to bump up the difficulty and spend more time with a game. if it saves me even an extra hour, good. k srsly tho battle speed is probably the bigger obstacle for me in finishing SC. at least I can admit me and TitS combat and its underlying mechanics don't mesh well.

It's a simple system, but functional. If you invest on each character strength you will probably have no issue ever with the battle system and, at the very least, should make battles shorter.

For example, stack all STR items and orbs on Zane and let him destroy pretty much anything. The same goes for Chloe and MAG.

I usually recommend TIST because of the story rather than the battle system. I also recommend people to play this in a slow pace since the game itself takes it's sweet time for everything.

^ Absolutely, just... After SC. So not in a while, I think.

Count me in the group that thinks TiTS' combat system is fucking boring. If you're on PC, you can just use cheatengine's speed hack feature to play the battles in fast forward. Anything from 1.5x to 10x and beyond.

Yeah, definitely take things slow with the Kiseki games. I replayed FC (and currently replaying SC) with a very different mindset compared to how I usually play JRPGs, and I'm enjoying it immensely. Posted more of my impressions in the Kiseki megathread if someone wants to read me go from "eeeeeh meh" to "fuck yeah" concerning TiTS.

So i just learned that Namco released a DS game called Xenosaga1+2. I will find out what on earth is this.

http://xenosaga.wikia.com/wiki/Xenosaga_I_&_II

Yeah, I've wanted to play it since it came out.

"The Episode II portion of the game has been completely rewritten by Xenosaga creator Tetsuya Takahashi, which expands and enhances the storyline. This fills in some of the holes caused by Episode II, allowing for a better understanding of the plot and reducing the amount of questions that will be unanswered in Episode III."

I was playing Tokyo Mirage and after 20h the game did not click with me so I just gave up .

Decided to start Star Ocean 5 hopefully I will enjoy it more, even after not hearing good thing about it .

I downloaded cheat engine and I couldn't make heads or tails of it. Could you PM me or post something a bit more specific? I only want the 1.5x speed hack, and I have no experience with CE.

I JUST came to work, but I'll PM you a short guide when I get home later today

Playing through Xenoblade right now. I'm about 25 hours in and I haven't quite reached Prison Island yet but I'm close. I really like it so far, it's a different experience from any other JRPG I've played.

How many hours do I have left? Fifty, seventy-five?

55 hrs left lol

At least the usual gametime is around 80 hrs and each hour is great.

Up to the final dungeon in SO5, but went ahead and accomplished the majority of side quests - I think I have 93% of them finished. So I should finish up with that (and watching a bunch of Private Actions) then I'll go beat the game some time this week. And then the fun begins - tackling the bonus dungeon and the Ethereal Queen. Hopefully this will be a bit easier than it was in SO4 ;)

Got back into smt strange journey after a looong hiatus. Finally found my way out of sector
grus
and got to
horologium
only to get my ass beaten badly by
gore
because I'm
law aligned
. Holy shit was that a tough fight, but I managed to finally beat him after trying like 10 times. I mean when you think he's finally going down and then
- surprise motherfucker - *recovers 7500hp*.
I both love and hate this game. Sigh.

Xenoblade Chronicles X. Chapter 8.

I fucken love my skell.

Doing mostly side quests right now and I'm higher than what the enemies are in the main story so I must have grinded enough lol.

Fire Emblem (gba)

My first tactical rpg and loving it. i just finished chapter 15. Fun game.
Now i want to explore the tactical rpg genre more. Suggestions?

I want story, gameplay, not too punishing difficulty.
I heard FF Tactics and the Ogre Battle game are pretty complex so I might not want to play them now

Playing Ace Combat 4.

Seems pretty cool so far. Bought 4, 5 and 0. The music is pretty great so far, and while the story is nothing to write home about, I'm enjoying the little cutscenes that pop up.

Just started I am Setsuna. Enjoying it so far.

Completed Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam two nights ago. Really enjoyed it for the first 3/4ths of the game. The last fourth destroys the pacing and somewhat overstays the games welcome.

Satisfying final boss win, though.

Wrapped up Dragon Quest VI tonight!

VI > IV > V confirmed! Can I dream of the day it gets a full 3D remake?

Next up is more handheld goodness with Crisis Core FFVII!

Currently playing I Am Setsuna. I've heard it's only about 20 hours long, which is perfect. After that, I'm going to go back and play Chrono Trigger, followed by Chrono Cross since it's been sitting in my PSN library for ages.

I would recommend playing Sacred Stones or Path of Radiance since you liked Fire Emblem 7. Jeanne D'arc on PSP is a less complex SRPG in the style of Tactics Ogre and FFT. You could always play Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, it's not as complex as the original FFT but it's still quite deep and you won't have any preconceived notions of what the game is supposed to be given you haven't played the first one. After Fire Emblem 7, Final Fantasy Tactics Advance is my favorite SRPG so I really can't recommend it enough.
