what jrpg are you playing right now ?

I just started Star Ocean: The Last Hope. It's neat so far. Hopefully it stays good - the reviews weren't so hot.

You know, I played 75 percent of the 360 version and really liked it. Everyone's free to have their opinion on it, I get that. But I felt it was a fairly enjoyable story. I do have the PS3 version an hope to finally get to it soon.

It's not this totally terrible game so many make it out to be. The battle system is actually pretty straightforward and isn't a major shock or departure to those that have played the other SO games and especially 3 in particular. Yes, some of the dialogue is cheesy but that didnt bother me. I just look at cheesy dialogue as part of the personalities of the characters that have that. The overall theme of the story, or at least one of the themes anyway is the exploration of space and unknown places. I think that's neat. But I'd say definitely stick with it if you don't mind a bit of cheesy dialogue and can tolerate some typical RPG aspects of the story. If you can get the game cheap its worth it to at least see where they took the 4th game for better or worse.

As for me, yesterday I picked back up Tales Of Graces F after having put it off last year due to backlog. I got some of the Level Up and 2x SP DLC so that's definitely helping me get through faster. I just needed to get my bearings and remember what I was doing after not playing for a year! I'm on my way and hope to be done within a few weeks. I'd also like to play the Dragons Dogma expansion at some point. That was one of the best games of last year!

1)Final Fantasy XII International
2)Dragons Dogma Dark Arisen

3)Star Ocean 4 The Last Hope International

About 30 minutes into A.S.H. Archaic Sealed Heart and about 2 hours into Xenoblade.

I started ASH with fan translation but somehow never really played it. Is it any good?

You will. Yuri is one of the best protagonists in any JRPG, if not the best.

I don't like him, it can happen, people are different you know, tastes and all, although I can understand why some people like him.

That's too bad, since there are other good games in the series. (And VP2 is better than VP1.)

Not for me, it isn't. What exactly makes 2nd better for you?
I liked Lenneth more than Silmeria, gameplay seemed fresh in the first one and mostly outdated in second. Combat was OK in both actually. The VP1 story is better than VP2 too for me. Also VP2 is too devoid of colour even if it looks nice. The thing I most dislike about VP2 are weird pauses and dungeons are boring, also game gets repetitive later on, too much jumping!
Then again, it might be I'm looking to VP1 through nostalgia glasses.
When I think about it, I probably enjoyed Covenant of the Plume more than VP2.

big wall of text about SO4, ToG, DD
Battle system of SO4 is pretty complex, if you use all characters and all possibilities of the system. I too think that gameplay of SO4 is worth it suffering through that story. Also I found dialogue and characters to be hilarious, in a way that "it's so bad that good again", if you know what I mean.

If we talking about actiony combat, my favourites this gen are SO4 and ToG! Gameplay of ToG is the best in Tales for me. Have fun with it!

Still have to play DD though.

I thought VP2 was more "playable" than VP1.

But then, VP1 had more memorable artwork and stuff like "TO MY SIDE MY NOBLE EINHERJAR".

Playable in which way? I wasn't really sure how to treat battles in VP2 until way later in the game, early on I had to just stay out of range and spam spells from a safe distance. Not that I'm really complaining, those battls were incredibly tense. Some of those boss battles, goddamn those were crazy.

I prefer VP1's battles though. I like the ring of characters and tinkering with combos. Comboing in VP2 is fun as well but was more situation dependent.

I guess the biggest reason I prefer VP1 though is the non gameplay stuff. The artwork, characters, music, plot, towns, time limit structure...everything was far more compelling than in VP2.

Comboing in VP2 is vastly superior since everybody has more moves and you get to choose them. There's far more "tinkering with combos" in VP1 than 2. Try playing through it again, you'll know how to move in the opening battles and you'll be destroying enemies easily. Spells were so weak in VP2, I don't see why you would do that. It'd be really boring, lol. :P

I think VP1 has the better dungeons and characters, but VP2 is better at everything else.

VP1 has a cool structure the first time around, but when you replay it, it's the same stories repeated. The same characters every time getting sent up for treasures. The time limit structure doesn't mean much since there's not much to actually do.

VP2's gameplay is far, far, far better and lends itself to replaying since there's a lot more to mess around with.

Replayed Ys 3 the other day if that counts. Not really as good as I remember it. After playing Oath in Felghana I had somehow started believing that a lot of the abilities like double jump and spin attacks were available in the original as well, but the platforming and the combat were a lot more basic. Still a pretty fun game though, and I prefer the SNES music to the screeching electric guitars in the remake.

Yes and no, game kinda encourages to use the same method over and over again, it's that effective. You know it, I know it, everybody knows it. So you jump in the back of enemy, brake it some and than use Nibelung Valesti till the times end. So not really vastly superior, imo.

You think VP2 has better story too?

That's fine, but it's not like you're doing anything different than attacking head on in VP1. Where you're attacking doesn't really negate that while you're attacking, you have more options. I mean, the fact that you can attack from different angles, move around on the battlefield while enemies do the same, split your characters up into different units to move, etc, all open up a far more varied battle system. Just because you choose to play a certain way doesn't negate that there are many options available.

If that's the case, I just counter your "Move the back strategy" with a bunch of mages and great magic. :P

I don't think the story in either one is noteworthy. They both had their moments.

I couldn't care less about story in games, though, so that rarely enters into my equation when talking about games. :)

beat the main story in Pokemon Black 2 last night. now comes the timesink(300+ hours) that is post-game for me.

about 10 hours into ff12

Picked up Golden Sun: Dark Dawn yesterday so i'll start that soon and do Pokemon stuffs on the side.

PS2 version is playable, just that when roaming in town the framerate drops to complete disaster levels. PC Version should be better? I haven't played it unfortunately.

PC version has some definite graphical and audio glitches. I'd honestly probably go with the PS2 version over the PC version. Dreamcast version is obviously the best, though.

Started playing Infinite Undiscovery for the hell of it. Doubtful I'll ever finish it but I might as well try, I payed for it, after all.

Not far at all in yet but the battle system seems like it could be enjoyable enough to carry me through the (supposedly short, thank god) game. And there's a crafting system? That's always a huge plus in my book. The story seems hilariously bad though

They have P3 FES as a PS2 classic. Bought it a couple weeks ago for $5. This is for NA, not sure if it's up for other regions.

EDIT: https://store.sonyentertainmentnetwork.com/#!/en-us/cid=UP9000-NPUD21621_00-0000000000000000

There you go. It was originally $10 (and it was actually $10 while I was still trying to decide which version to get. When I went back to the store a few days later, FES is $5 and P3P is still $20. Kinda made my decision for me)

I'm glad I went with FES though, I dig the anime cutscenes and I prefer the running around/3D models in the town/school over the visual novel type approach I hear P3P went with.

I know what you're talking about, I read up on it before deciding on FES or P3P but all indications were that it had been patched (or, rather, a patched version of the game replaced the buggy version on the store).

I do have multiple save files, just in case though. Thanks for the warning.

Is that a sale or a permanent thing?

EDIT: Yep, it's a sale. Not sure how long will it last though.

Got my Gamecube controller back yesterday, so I am ready to attack that Gamecube backlog. I finally decided on BK1 over Xenoblade and Pikmin 1 to play first. Is there anything I should know about before starting on this game?

I know this game is heavy on story (yay!!!) and gameplay, and I know a little about the card systems. Though, I hear defense cards aren't super useful, that true?

Argh, it's kinda hard finding a PSone/PSP JRPG that I can play on my Vita. I already played most of them.

I've been playing Ni No Kuni, I think this is the first Level-5 game that I'm actually enjoying, lol. Story is poor, but everything else is between above average to pretty great, really like the world map, side quests are pretty bland but I still like doing them, the rewards are nice enough. A visually outstanding game, I want to see every inch of it. It's a good effort, even the battle system gets somewhat interesting after 8-10 hours.

It has a very slow start and I don't like the hand holding talky talky design of it, but I can overlook those problems. If instead of halting the game over and over again and telling the player useless things, they made those into party banter when you're playing and moving it would have been a million times better game and far less annoying, the game talks too much as it is, I don't have much patience for this stuff anymore :s

Persona 4 Golden. I generally dislike anime, dolls, and wimpering girls, but this game is actually quite good. The production and UI are amazing.

Just finished FF 13 and am now on Chapter 3 of FFXIII-2. Have to get ready for LR!

Oh and of course FFXI daily.

Thinking of either starting up FFIII on the DS or going back to P3FES in the next week or two after beating Abyss last week.

How are you liking it so far?

I'm not THAT far in, and it's decent. It's slow to ramp up for me personally where as I was more immediately hooked when playing say Symphonia and Vesperia.

I also with the graphics were cleaner. 3d doesn't add much and there is a sh*t ton of cross talk, but going into non 3d mode doesn't really improve much other than no cross talk. Wish non 3d mode added AA.

I one to want to explore all of the nooks and crannies and talk to most everyone. I hate to miss story parts. That being said the non voice acted skits come a little to often and last a little to long. It breaks up the pacing to much IMO.

Combat is solid like most Tales games and I think the 3d slide pad works fine for the game. I also have yet to hit any crazy difficulty spikes either which is good.

Recently got into FFVll, really blown away by it so far. This is the first final fantasy game that I've actually given a chance and it makes me wonder why I haven't before, the story, characters and everything is pretty superb so far, just crossed water and heading to Temple of the Ancients, about 10 hours in or so. Can't wait to see how it progresses.

I'm currently playing Fire Emblem: Awakening right now. I'm on chapter 21 of my first play through. It's my first Fire Emblem game, so I am playing it on normal- planning to do hard and probably lunatic runs afterwards. I'm really enjoying it! I've had it since April, but I kept putting it off until after the semester ended. Good thing I did- I doubt I would have been able to concentrate on my school work because it's so addicting.

I'm also in the middle of Disgaea and .hack//infection. I've played them both before, so I'm not giving them near as much attention as FE:A, but for some reason I just felt like playing them again.

Yeah, I can agree pretty much with all of that based on my play through. I didn't really go back and get everything you could as I was ready to be done.

Graphically, I wish they had really done more to rework it. I think some of the visuals probably worked better on a larger screen, but they when they shrunk the whole thing down, the camera angles didn't change, leaving you with tiny character models that left next to no detail. It seemed to hit home as well in the voiced dialogue scenes where I'm sure more detail could be fleshed out if it was on something a bit larger.

I also left the 3D off the entire time. Didn't feel like it added all that much to the game.

Combat was fun and I didn't really hit the spike till end game, but that could also be because I skipped over some of the end-game stuff. Controls worked out really well and I did like the large Artes buttons you could map on the lower screen as well. Real easy to access and a pretty good use of the touch screen.

Ugh yeah, not going to happen. It's just horrible. Tri Ace writes some of the most cringeworthy, artificial and just plain dumb dialogue and characters. They should get rid of their animators too.

I should just take a pause from gaming till E3, buy a PS3 then and play ToGF, Ni No Kuni and all the other PS3 JRPGs I've missed or left unfinished. Till then it's X-files and The Wire for me.

I'm still playing through DDS2, kinda got sidetracked b/c I started a new job yesterday. I'm in the midst of the Airport, hit a roadblock and needed to grind a bit to get a skill I didn't have to beat a boss. Gonna make a LTTP post on the game, it's really great, probably my favorite of the SMT games I've played so far.

Not playing any right now. I started Trails in the Sky FC some time ago, but I took the PS3 version and can't find the motivation to sit down and play this that way, especially with how ugly it looks on a big screen.

I like what I played of it so far though (about 7-8 hours IIRC) and I REALLY want to try harder to get into this. So I'm thinking of rebuying the PSP version off PSN once I get a Vita, soon enough.

I adore the ps3 versions. I couldn't stand playing them on psp for long. The reesolution destroyed any detail in the sprites and textures and the font was borderline unreadable for me. The ps3 port may not push the system at all but I really love the look of the sprites and the font is so much nicer to read for long periods. The Vita will help with the colors and the ghosting but won't give you any extra clarity and detail.

Getting close to the end of SC now, just got to the
Liberl Ark
. :)

We really need a Kiseki community thread. Ryouga is working on it, sorta. Hurry uppp Ryouga.

Casual or Classic mode?

I'll soon play Awakening and it's my first FE, too.

Guys I'm playing too many JRPGs at once! I need to focus on one of them or I'll never finish any of them. Ni no Kuni, P4: Golden, Trails in the Sky, Final Fantasy VI, Tales of the Abyss, Valkyria Chronicles, Final Fantasy Tactics, Disgaea 3, Chrono Cross, Xenoblade, Breath of Fire 4, Vagrant Story AND Riviera the Promised Land.

I'm like 10-20 hours into each of them and I've just kind of stalled.

Oh, I totally forgot Fire Emblem Awakening which I just started.

I just finished part 1 of Tales of Vesperia PS3. The new additions seem to be well implemented so far and I'm enjoying the battle system quite a bit more after experimenting with Raven, Repede and Flynn. Hopefully Patty joins soon as she looks like the most interesting character of the bunch.

Did you play Breath of Fire 4 yet?

Yeah. I finished it twice already. Back in 2000 and 2011 when it got released on PSN.

Maybe I should give Legend of Heroes II, III, IV a whirl on PSP. Are they decent games?

I wish I could find Tales of Eternia for PSP. It seems almost impossible to find it though.

Nearing the end of Wild ARMs 2. I inadvertently ran into a super boss and he floored me :-| That's what I get for complaining that the game is too easy.

The team of Tim, Ashley, and Lilka has been getting me through the game without issue, might switch things around as I try to go for sidequests. I should probably upgrade ARMs at least once too.

I need to find my disc of Dragon Dragoon 2. Since that was a pretty badass game. From what I understand though is you need to play through it twice to see the real ending?

Casual or Classic mode?

I'll soon play Awakening and it's my first FE, too.

Casual mode- I don't really enjoy permadeath stuff, so I avoid it if I can. It's such a good game, but I don't think I would have been able to enjoy it near as much in classic. It's why I'm kind of wary to try other games in the series despite really enjoying this one.

I was playing TWEWY on my 3DS, but had to drop it for school about two weeks ago. My workload is starting to ease up, though, so I'll start it back up soon. Honestly, I'm not really into it. This is my second time trying to play it, and I just don't see the appeal. The combat ruins it for me. I'd much rather just select actions from menus like every other JRPG, lol.

at episode 11 of raidou 1.

this game is easy as fuuuark. level grind, get summons that are a dungeon above the one you're currently in. gg.
