What 'serious' news sources are out there?

I'm just curious if people visit any sites that take a more serious look at the game industry.

I'm not talking about looking at the business side of things, but sites that deal with broad-based issues (i.e: game violence or anything else that's a big-picture, whole-industry issue) in a deeper (and maybe balanced) way that goes beyond the cursory approach the big sites take.

...maybe somewhere that doesn't really focus on reviews and previews (although if they do that, that's fine).

Anyhow, let fly...

Wow, all fantastic resources, particularly Reirom. I never realized the power of Gizmondo!

Seriously, though, no one have any real suggestions?

The ones I go to:

GameTab has links to articles/blogs and stuff with news.

RPGFan has RPG related news, though some of it tends to be on the rather obscure side (like release dates for Dreamcast dating sims)

MagicBox I usually go here for screens

Since all game reporting requires is a word processor and internet the market is oversaturated with shit. You have to appeal to the lowest common denominator, which in gaimg ranges from retards who fail out of elementary school to the people that pass through high school barely able to read. Therefore, there is not going to be any serious sources. Its mostly just losers who have no talent for real jobs and want to go through life getting into E3, and getting 9 year olds to click on their banners. Any attempt to challenge the readers will result in some other site getting more hits.

Well, since I write for GameDAILY BIZ, so I felt it was only fair to list both industry news sources, and not just my own...

Not us :)

We never run rumor as a rule, or if we do we clearly state that it hasn't been confirmed. You know... like real journalists ;)

I wouldn't exactly characterize them as a "news source," unless recycled week-old rumors and fanboy ramblings posing as "industry analysis" qualify as news.

Gamesdaily is cool though. I run into you guys all the time at events, so I know you do some independent reporting. :)

Don't think you can mention a single (nor two, nor three) sources and be done with it. Every source has its flaws, be it late, made-up rumours or a writer with a cocky attitude.

I myself visit quite a few sites and forums, including GameKult, GAF, Cube-Europe, AdvancedMN and a few dutch websites.

Did somebody change the topic title here or something? Nintendogs news sources? Sure these sites are all good sources but... for Nintendogs?

I feel confused.

x85 had me register for this forum for this really awesome, really small game website where everyone took everything super serious.. there were like 40 of them, and they all actually made games.

x85 would never register because he was worried they would redicule him.. and I got banned for photoshopping a Metroid Prime screenshot with Blinx. Then I returned to the GAF, where everybody knows my name. Damn high society dorks were keepin me down.

Oh, I dont remember the name of the site.

Yeah, you can always turn to New Game Journalism for a more "intelligent" opinion...

If you ask me, the best "serious" perspectives on the industry - in terms of its commercial workings and its products - are in print. Ignore the arrogance of Edge and it can be a superb read. NextGen used to be an amazing read (ten years ago). Game Informer always has something new these days. Meanwhile MCV (print) offers unparalleled detail and analysis on all sorts of industry issues. In my view there are several sites that offer comparable quality particulary from a news perspective and some of them have been listed here.

BTW acidviper I think you overgeneralised just a little bit there as well...

Damn Sickboy, I'm disappointed. You came HERE looking for serious responses? Serious mind numbing editorial debauchery yes, but serious anything else...no.

This is more like a short bus, WWE fan site, version of a gaming news forum. But it has it's charm.

I know there are some people looking for this sort of stuff, what with some of the waxing nostalgic about Next-Generation and all :)
