What should Retro Studios work on?

Whatever they want? they have released arguably the best metroidvania game, and they have released arguably the best 2d platformer.

They need a big ass blank check with that resume.

Good lawd yes! The odds of that actually happening seem to be almost non existent but we can dream. Nintendo is in dire need of more console RPGs, no better way to remedy that than to bring back Mother.
RETRO doesn't have experience making games like Mother. Seems like a bad fit either way

Retro has always struck me as being versatile, I bet people thought the same thing when they announced they were making a Donkey Kong platformer after having made the Prime saga.

*Beaten

After Tropical Freeze, I'd say whatever they want. DKCR3 is fine. Metroid Prime 4 is even better. A new IP entirely would be sweet. It's all good.

They didn't have experience with platformers before Donkey Kong Country Returns either. I want to see how diverse their talent is.
Mother is strictly story based and they haven't demonstrated talent in that department, especially not the kind of story telling that is necessary for a Mother game.
Seems kind of a silly match up.

Since Retro's last stint in the Metroid series, Nintendo has had one released game and one unreleased game. The released game sold below expectations, rated worse than nearly every Metroid game, and the fanbase hated it with a passion. The new one coming out has some good reports about it, but the style is very strongly hated and the fact that it is a spin-off rather than the Metroid game that people have been waiting for since 2007 is putting people off something awful. Nintendo is not so shortsighted a company to understand Retro's significance. Heck, I recall reading a rumour (and it may have just been a rumour) that Nintendo got really haughty about Retro being given so much praise for Prime, and decided to work on Other M itself to show that Metroid is bigger than Retro.

I find that highly unlikely, especially since they aren't exactly low on Miyamoto's list of developers he trusts with projects. If any thing, I'd sooner say that maybe Tanabe and Retro had a falling out rather than Sakamoto or Nintendo as a whole having some sort of moment of stupidity over a tertiary series.

If it's Donkey Kong I think it's a 3D game, in a sense the spiritual sequel to DK64.

It can be Metroid, either Super Metroid 2 or Prime 4.

Maybe it's a new IP, but what would that be exactly? I can see a Zelda spinoff happening.

At any rate I think their game will launch alongside NX console in 2017.

Metroid or a new IP, definitely not Donkey Kong. Nintendo has more than a glut of 2D Platformers, they are sorely lacking in anything remotely like Metroid or whatever new IP Retro could offer them as their western arm.

I don't know why people would expect them to make a 3D platformer. They had the technology to make a 3D platformer, and willingly chose to make 2D ones. I don't think DK64 means very much to retro, lol

Metroid Prime 4, though who knows if they are still up to the task.

That or Star Tropics, or a new ip. Let some other team work on Donkey Kong.

"3D" platformer similar to Mario 3D World, not a 360 degree camera type adventure/exploration game.

Put me in the "Whatever the hell they want" camp. Their track record justifies it.

Whatever it is, it's a Day 1 purchase for me.

Honestly? I desperately need an HD Metroid Prime, then they can do whatever they want except for Donkey Kong, I'm not a big fan of the series.

The problem with Donkey Kong isn't that it's Donkey Kong.. it's that the game's aesthetic doesn't lend itself to RETRO's talents. They have impressive technical prowess considering some of the achievements they made with the Prime series relative to the hardware.

Give them funding, get them hiring, and spend some quality time on another immersive, visually stunning Prime game. It's what they (and we) deserve.

Personally I would want a third Donkey Kong game to finish off a trilogy since the two they worked on are some of my favorite games of all time, but I think they should be able to work on whatever they want. A new IP would be great.

finish off the second DKC trilogy, especially considering Tropical Freeze is their best game and one of the best 2D games of all time.

I want to see a big new IP from them, preferably something like a WRPG. Nintendo is lacking in western games so I feel like this would help fill that gap in their library.

I don't know if I'd consider Metroid Prime 2 and 3 to be top tier. They're good but I wouldn't put them on the level of the original.
IMO, Metroid Prime 2 is absolutely top tier and comes very close to the original, with much higher highs and lower lows. Nothing in Prime is as amazing as Sanctuary Fortress, but on the other hand nothing in Prime is as obnoxious as navigating Temple Grounds.

I could see Nintendo putting them on a new Eternal Darkness or something.

I say let them do whatever, they can do anything as far as I'm concerned.

More Donkey Kong Country please. Their prior two entries in the franchise are easily some of the best of their respective consoles and generations.

Also Retro working on Donkey Kong games seems to anger people, which is frankly pretty hilarious.

I addressed that in the OP, Itoi's involvement could turn that around.

Itoi has gone on record multiple times saying he is done with the franchise. I would love a Mother remake or new game, but it isn't happening without Itoi, and therefore it's never happening.

We are lucky we've gotten the three excellent games we have. Now if only the third game would be released in the west...

I want Prime-style Metroid. But are they even the same studio that put out the Prine trilogy? Some high profile people have left and there's probably been a lot of staff turnover in general since they last shipped a Prime game.
