What should Retro Studios work on?

Yeah they need to do a new IP or resurrect another Nintendo IP. I don't really want to see them go back to Metroid or Donkey Kong.

Metroid Prime / Donkey Kong crossover: Parts of the game you play as Donkey Kong in a FPS, parts as Samos in a 2D platformer.

A new IP would be great to see from them.
Even if it won't be a crowd pleaser a new DKC would be lovely too. Expectations would be high though, Tropical Freeze is a masterclass.

While I think them making another Metroid or DK would be great, I would love if they made their own original IP with Nintendo.

At this point and after making five amazing games, they have the right to make something brand new. It would be interesting and I hope if that is the direction they go in, it will be successful and fun :).

Now this is my kind of thread. I love Retro's games so much, they're pretty much the only games that I will buy Day 1, without question.

As for what I would like most, I suppose is another Metroid. Preferably another in the style of the Prime games. I just want a new Prime, in HD, and for them to make it. After that though I'd be fine if they never touched Metroid again.

I'd also be totally down for a new DKC from them, as Tropical Freeze is my favorite game on Wii U by a wide margin.

But really though, I just want to know what their next project is. The anticipation is killing me, and I could speculate all fucking day on what it could be. Whether it's a new IP, or a revival, or a franchise they've already worked with, I just want it as soon as it's ready. The true pain is knowing there are several Retro people on GAF and they just get to sit there in their comfy chairs...smugly laughing at us all.

I don't mean it, I love you Retro people.!

How nice of you to create a quarantine thread so people leave the ED thread alone~

I'd like to see retro try an original IP for a change, think they'd do something good.

Cranky Kong Country, a 3D platformer in the vain of DK64

dunno, but that would be hilarious. I think they should get a chance at a new IP

As much as I want a new Metroid, I'd rather see them work on a new IP. Specially seeing the success story of Splatoon.

Nintendo has been a little bit too reliant on their IPs, they need to explore more, even if it means that we will have to wait for more Metroid.
Also, do you guys remember Reggie wearing that Metroid pin? What was that about?

I wonder if Retro was working on it and they moved it to NX and had to remain quiet about it.

Hardcore Kirby.

But honestly I think they should do whatever they feel like making, they have only made masterpieces so far, I'll be there regardless.

I don't think Nintendo sees Retro as the high-tiered gaming gods as fans do.

I mean the pace at which they output games isn't great, but they're 5/5 for top tier titles so far (even if DKC:TF wasn't up my alley because of platformer fatigue). It would suck if Nintendo didn't value them properly.

A full HD 3D Metroid game for NX console.

A 2.5D Metroid 5 for NX portable.

Have both games ready alongside the NX's launch.

I don't know if I'd consider Metroid Prime 2 and 3 to be top tier. They're good but I wouldn't put them on the level of the original.

Metroid Prime 2 is absolutely top tier, Sanctuary Fortress alone makes it so.

I'd love to see them either make MP4, or try their hands at a racing game or a horror game.

So Diddy Kong Racing 2 for the first one and judging by reactions to Tropical Freeze's announcement a DKCR 3 would bring a certain brand of horror to some people.

Truly the franchise can cover all bases.

The next Metroid Prime. I wouldn't mind if they did DKR 3 though. That said, while neither will sell very well, Metroid appeals to core games that Nintendo needs, while DKR doesn't really and I'm sure the NX will have plenty of platformers or at least the next 3D Mario to start.

Since Retro's last stint in the Metroid series, Nintendo has had one released game and one unreleased game. The released game sold below expectations, rated worse than nearly every Metroid game, and the fanbase hated it with a passion. The new one coming out has some good reports about it, but the style is very strongly hated and the fact that it is a spin-off rather than the Metroid game that people have been waiting for since 2007 is putting people off something awful. Nintendo is not so shortsighted a company to understand Retro's significance. Heck, I recall reading a rumour (and it may have just been a rumour) that Nintendo got really haughty about Retro being given so much praise for Prime, and decided to work on Other M itself to show that Metroid is bigger than Retro.

I feel pretty confident that Nintendo values them highly. I mean the fact that they are even considered "an option" for a console Zelda means quite a lot I'd say. Miyamoto certainly has spoken very, very highly of them in recent years. He's also talked about the potential of expanding them to 2 teams (which would please me like nothing else).

How about different genres or new themes in general? I'm interested in Retro's take on, let's say, a supernatural Adventure game set in a world akin to Hellblazer, in my opinion a genre that hasn't been properly explored.

That is a odd rumor, considering Nintendo did ALOT to push Retro down the right track with Prime 1 (Myamotto being a key role here; pushed Retro hard, such as forcing them to make the Morph Ball Work and pushing for the FPS perspective).

So I don't by that, but I could see the 2D Metroid head feeling like "They are taking MY franchise away? Fuck them! I will put out an amazing game that tells MY version of Samus to the world!"....fast forward to the trainwreak worse then Sonic 06 that is Other M and the point is clear :l.

Regardless, I don't buy that and see Nintendo having a lot of respect for the studio (gave them another chance for a game series with DKC and they made two great games using that IP).

I mean, yeah ok, they're probably not quite on the level of the original prime.

But Metroid prime 1 is a legitimate contender for the best game ever. Just not living quite up to the standard they set themselves doesn't mean the game isn't top tier. I can think of very few games that play in a similar vein that get anywhere near prime 2/3, let alone 1.

- Metroid Prime 4
- Donkey Kong Country 6
- Sonic The Hedgehog Returns
- New IP
- Whatever they want because they have reached God like status in the games industry.

I don't think I believe that, doesn't sound very professional.

Considering Tropical Freeze is one of the greatest games ever made, I'd say a sequel to that. That would ensure I'll buy the NX, on day one.

A 3D 3rd person Metroid game or a 3D Donkey Kong would be ok with me.
Metroid is dead without them, don't think Nintendo has another studio that's big enough to make a good sequel without outsourcing. I'd like to see them take what they learned in terms of platforming and apply it to a 3D Metroid game since those always had some light platforming puzzle elements

I would like them to turn Ravenblade into an open world, first person medieval RPG akin to The Elder Scrolls.

How did I come to this? Well it started with Tamaki's rumor of a new IP. Then I thought of a Nintendo quote where they said new IPs come from new play styles, that if a game's mechanics fit a certain franchise, they apply it to that franchise. I thought, "What type of play style does Nintendo currently not have an IP for?" And my answer was a first person, Western style RPG. But I'll take whatever Retro puts out.

I mean, Nintendo hasn't exactly avoided being unprofessional in the past. :p

A bit funny if that rumor is true, as Nintendo's attempt at a Metroid without a Western developer post Prime as so bad that it killed the series :l. Then we have Federation Force (which I feel could be a great game) that is loathed online due to no 'traditional' Metroid being announced alongside it.

Nintendo mishandled the series badly and while a Retro-developed Metroid would be amazing, they shouldn't have be the ones to clean up Nintendo's mess with the series. They made three amazing games with the IP (and oversaw two decent spin-offs too) and had the right to move on to other projects. If they don't want to make another Metroid, they shouldn't feel forced to due to Nintendo not knowing what the hell to do with the IP.

Sorry if that sounds bitter but Nintendo needs to better manage their vault of IP's, as they can be used greatly.

After 3 amazing Metroid games and two spectacular Donkey Kong Countrys it's hard to argue that Retro aren't one of the best studios out there. But there's one issue, the community always wants more. I'm sure if people had their way Retro Studios would make nothing but Metroid forever and that's not going to be good for either the studio or the consumer. While Tropical Freeze is one of my favourite games of all time I don't want them to make a third. This may sound crazy but I don't want Metroid Prime 4 - not by Retro anyway.

I want Retro Studios to either do one of two things: Make an entirely new IP or revive a beloved franchise in a genre they have no experience in similar to what they did with Donkey Kong. The game I have in mind is Earthbound. I want to see Retro Studios reimagine the Mother franchise in their own wonderful way. We haven't seen Retro do a whole lot in the way of writing so it would be interesting to see how they can take on a game with a heavy narrative but more than anything I want a new Earthbound game and these guys are one of the few studios I would really trust with the project. Having Itoi on board couldn't hurt either.

Good lawd yes! The odds of that actually happening seem to be almost non existent but we can dream. Nintendo is in dire need of more console RPGs, no better way to remedy that than to bring back Mother.
