What was Squaresoft thinking with the battle system in Final Fantasy IX?

I don't disagree with the slowness of battles, but I can forgive it since the overall package is so great. It's definitely my favorite PS1 FF (aside from Tactics).

I recently finished FF IX after having it sitting in my backlog for well over a decade at this point, thanks in part due to frameskip by playing it on an emulator.

I think the general mechanics of the game are fine, but as others have said the battles are too slow. I also really don't like any of the characters in game. Zidane to his credit is different from your normal brooding antagonist in a FF game but I don't think having the MC being a goofball worked any better. I think my favorite character ended up being Steiner, but only because I pretended he was Scott Steiner when I turned him into a rampaging kill beast. Vivi and Dagger were OK, didn't care about Freya, Eiko and Amarant and actively avoided Quina until I was forced to recruit her.

I think my favorite modern FF protagonist might actually be Serah from XIII-2.
