What were your biggest movie letdowns? (besides The Last Jedi)

I know 99% everyone here would say TLJ is the biggest cinematic disappointment of all time, but besides that. :messenger_winking_tongue:

BTW movies that always seemed sus to begin with probably don't qualify, ie something like Matrix Resurrections, which everyone suspected was going to be a cringey waste of time, and ended up exactly that way.

For me it would be:

The Thing (2011) - I was so super hyped for this and the result was so....mediocre. Sigh. What a waste of a gigantic opportunity.
All the Alien movies after Aliens.
Robocop 2 (it was not a horrible movie, but such a huge drop from the first)
The Ghost and the Darkness - man eating lions, a true story...with a premise like that you would expect an amazing movie but somehow they really botched this...it ended up being boring and anti-climactic. I was totally bummed with the way it turned out.

I understand your frustration with The Thing prequel from 2011. I had so much anticipation for it and even managed to keep my hype in check. I didn't mind the film in general, but the CG in it absolutely killed the movie. I remember being so disappointed leaving the cinema back then.

I watched it again a year or 2 ago. And it's ok. But making a film to complement what might be my favourite movie of all time is a tough job. The effects are still bad and take away from the immersion.

I have to mention Prometheus and Alien Covenant. I love both movies but their shortcomings are hugely evident. I'd rather Scott double down on his original vison and release Prometheus 2. So much chopping and changing ruined these movies. But I still enjoy them as s huge fan of sci-fi/horror.

99% of long awaited sequels. They are just cash grabs raping an era when creativity and story telling was valued above all else.

Alien Covenant.

Ridley promised to go back to the roots of the franchise after Prometheus but instead he gave us more Prometheus.

The Crow: City of Angels

Loved the first movie and the second one was a major let down, basically shitting all over Brandon Lees legacy.

Terminator 3

This one is probably my most disappointing cinema experience of all time. T2 is my all time favorite movie and I was so hyped about the third one finally hitting theaters after years in development hell. I was a bit worried about Cameron not returning to direct but it's fucking Terminator! What can go wrong? Well, absolutely fucking everything. Total garbage from start to finish.

The Matrix sequels, all of em.

The Dark Tower, christ what a shitshow. Idris could've been a great Roland, the script and the direction were astoundingly bad.

The Lost World: Jurassic Park.
I had read the book before the movie came out, which only made things worse.

Prometheus, too.
Jfc, that movie.

Rumor has it that The Thing 2011 had practical effects work done, and then the suits came in and demanded it be changed to CGI. Basically painting over the practical effects. When the 2011 one comes up, I wonder how it'd have changed it's reception if they'd gone with the original work.

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets.
It had potential but ...

LMAO, my friend is a massive Fifth Element fan so he was there opening weekend. When I asked him about it afterwards, he told me it completely sucked.

I asked him if the movie had anything good in it, and he said, "well, there is a scene where Rihanna dresses up like a schoolgirl, a maid, a nurse, etc."

Me:

But he quickly added the movie sucked that bad and I could probably find the scene on YouTube within a few months anyway. So I saved myself a few hours of likely misery.

Curiously, the only member of the cast who doesn't get to do a whole lot is co-star Steven Seagal, whose combined screen time probably amounts to little more than 10 minutes, despite his prominent billing in the film's deceptive trailers.
My best friend at the time was a massive fan of Steven Seagal. We were stunned.

the last jedi, on the other hand, is one of my favorite SW movies. i was very pleasantly surprised by it after the hate it received.

TLJ is great.

I would probably say Spider-Man 3 or pacific rim 2.

Even though I still enjoy the pirates movies. It would of been great if they were all on the same level as the first

I remember this being a big deal back then. I was young as hell and still remember people bringing it up they felt scammed. Lol. Segal was somehow hype at the time

I can't believe Indiana Jones 4 wasn't the first answer here.

I have been disappointed here and there but usually I go in with certain expectations (like Matrix 4 for instance). But nothing prepared me for the shitshow that was Indy 4.

Oh, and Terminator 3.

The funniest thing about that monetized YouTube hate for the movie are the people who sit in their car and scream that Disney MUST bring back George Lucas to remake the sequel trilogy, not knowing that TLJ was George's Episode VII. So they're demanding that Disney have George Lucas make The Last Jedi again (but with Midichorlians).

The Last Jedi had potential, plenty of good ideas, the cinematography and concept of sacrifice are positives. It is different but also flawed, even as a standalone film.

The main villain being killed off and hero disregarding his core value of not giving up was disappointing. Finn doesn't sacrifice himself so no real impact. Mary Poppins. Hux is turned into (unfunny) comic relief for no reason. The space siege was boring. Casino planet was a poor attempt at social commentary.

Adam Driver got swole because he was carrying the new films. Andy Serkis as Snoke was good.

Quantum of Solace.

Casino Royale set a very high bar, changing the tone and direction of Bond, but whether you liked that or not, still being an incredible film.

QoS was just boring. A shame, as the base plot (using water as a tool for power) had an interesting premise.

Star Wars Episode VIII - The Last Jedi
Star Wars Episode IX - Rise of the Skywalker

Spider-Man: Far From Home
Black Widow
Captain Marvel
Eternals
Avengers Age of Ultron
Black Panther
Thor: The Dark World
Coming 2 America

I'm sure there is more 🤔

Eh, really? Being familiar with Alien and Aliens would've raised issues with the evolution of aliens in covenant and how they spread. And then there's just the dumb actions these characters take. 👀

Beside Highlander 2 I must say The Phantom Menace.

Waited so long for this movie and when I first saw it I was so baffled. Trade politics? Boring Jedi? They even made the German dub of the trade federation sound like frenchies talking German. And everything looked so new and shiny, with extra gloss, while the original trilogy had all these used parts on the ships, small details of battles fought and corners and edges. That really bugged me the most.

I think it could've been an interesting tale of the rise of tyranny and how democracy was used against itself but George Lucas is not a good enough director for that.
