I wonder if it will the superior CHA LA HEAD CHA LA and not of that shitty US opening.

Because Kageyama is king.

Both are included. Cha la only plays with the Japanese audio on, if this follows the other dub releases.

Yamamoto is king. Unfortunately he plagiarized his crown. (Dragon Soul is the best opening.)

Uh, so are they not releasing the rest of DBKai in the "Parts". I have parts 1-6, waiting on Part 7, but then they started bundling it into seasons...wtf.

So um... what's the word on these... better than Dragon Box or what?

They're not the Dragon Boxes, they're missing next episode previews, and the colours are a bit off because they're from a master that's a copy of a copy (this is not a fault of Funimation's restoration, but rather just a fault of their film not being an original print). The Japanese audio isn't the greatest either (though, it was recorded in Mono). They're the best release you'll see from Funimation's masters, but Toei's original prints receiving the same treatment would result in a better product.

I'd honestly wait until Funimation starts bundling them in 30 episode sets, since maybe we'll hear if Toei plans on doing anything (though I'd suspect 2013-2015 at the earliest).

If you want DBZ on Blu-Ray right now and won't care if Toei does their own release, this is a good product.

UGH

We can't even choose? That's messed up :(

The Ocean dub is edited, so using those voices over the uncut video would cause issues, and since Funimation has whipped their hands of that dub, they won't pay for a redub by them.

Head Cha La would be a very weird song to hear dubbed... this is the opening used on the Blu-Rays. It's the same one used on the orange bricks.

Has the old Vegeta for the Saiyan saga I'm pretty sure.

No, the dub on these sets is the Ultimate Uncut Edition dub that was produced in the mid 00's, not the 1996 Ocean dub.

Ah, sorry if I confused you. The rest of Kai will still be released in the 13 episode sets. It's just that Funimation is collecting those 13 episode sets, and bundling 2 of them together to make those Kai season sets.

That sounds lame :(

Interesting. And nope, Hironobu Kageyama can make lame shows like Robotack awesome due to his song!

I wish they would dub Cha-La-head-cha-la in english , i really would like to hear how that would sound like.

The closest thing is Dragon Ball's opening in English heavy metal

If I like superior picture quality with the native screen aspect ratio and the Japanese music with English dub, which version should I get?

How bad was Kai's censoring? The whole fight with Raditz was butchered when I watched it when it was airing in Japan.

You're looking at either the Dragon Boxes, or these Blu-Rays.

Kai's Japanese censoring was wishy washy, basically any tobacco, nudity, or bloody violence was removed. Due to the music scandal, and the fact it doesn't adapt Boo I can't recommend that to anyone.

I'd recommend it to casual DBZ fans who didn't care for the Buu saga. The lack of filler is a beautiful thing (with some drawbacks, of course.)

If you categorize yourself as any sort of fan of DBZ, you kind of owe it to yourself to watch Boo simply because of the character culmination (especially for Vegeta) that storyline brings in.

Regular DBZ does run for too long in some cases, but a lot of the filler is really good stuff.

Eh, standing around talking while cutting to deer running away is not what I'd call good filler.

The After World tournament is okay, but Garlic Jr. is rancid. The only filler I like in Z is some of the Snake Way stuff, and obviously the driving lesson episode, haha.

Music scandal? What's that all about?
IMO, DBZ Kai is the best way to go: Less fillers and the fights flow much better instead of seeing a few seconds of fighting then 2-3 minutes of characters just standing there starting at each other and the other characters are commenting on their fight.

The only filler I really liked was the stuff during Gohan's training, with the robot and orphans.

Driving Episode is actually a really neat filler episode because it's based on 2 chapter title pages Toriyama created for the manga while it was being serialized, haha.

Vegeta and nappa on arlia was a great introduction to their strength and brutality. I liked Gohan with the robot, all the snake way stuff./etc.

I also in some ways liked fake namek. At least it felt like bulma was part of the adventure in that filler. Once she gets to real namek she pretty much just languishes in the background for the whole freeza saga.

I don't really have a problem with character filler, but more so the filler to just pad out an entire episode. You know, the quick cuts to wild life running away, trees being blown over, and Goku having a deep and thought provoking conversation with Vegeta on rocks.

Ideally, a remake of Dragon Ball Z would find the thin line between both. Character filler in Dragon Ball anime is generally good, because you enjoy these characters and want to see more. The problem is character filler isn't the predominant form of filler in Z.

Release has been suspended. Looks like I was right to wait until they finished it all.

Funimation announced on Thursday that it has suspended production on all future Blu-ray releases of the Dragon Ball Z television anime series, including the Level 2.1 disc that was originally scheduled to be released on March 27.

Funimation said that it had produced the Blu-ray editions of the series due to fan demand; however, the company explained that "due to technical challenges of restoring from the original film frame by frame, we are unable to continue these releases by way of this process." The company added it will re-evaluate its process of creating these Blu-rays and will research more efficient methods of restoration.

Funimation announced last July that it would release the series for the first time on Blu-ray. Funimation and the Dallas-based company ANDTRANSFER remastered the series from the original Japanese 16mm film reels at 1080p, keeping the original 4:3 aspect ratio. The first set, Dragon Ball Z Level 1.1, was released with the first 17 episodes on November 8.

Only 1.1 and 1.2 were released, which is episodes 1 through 34. Sounds like even though the transfer's been highly praised it's too expensive. :(

Why is it that Funimation can never get a DBZ release right? The get every other anime they release right but not DBZ. Its always half assed.

Yikes. Guess actually going in and doing a decent job of it just isn't justifying itself compared to the quick and easy route they went with the orange bricks.

I'm not a video guy, but couldn't they just upscale the Dragon Box footage for the Bluray release? That was already frame by frame remastered by Toei.

The Dragon Boxes were pretty much perfect, unless you care about the old dub music.

As mentioned, the Dragon Boxes were very highly praised, although I think I did read in Daizex's review that the music was slightly lower quality or that they used more discs per set since they had to squeeze the dub voices in (nothing to do with the dub music, which wasn't included.)

DBZ Kai was pretty much exactly the Japanese releases but with dub voices too. Also, different dubbed opening per each set (Sean Schimmel, Vic Mignona (TV version), Justin Cook, and three or two or three others I think.)

I don't really count the Dragonboxes since those were done in Japan and all Funimation had to do was translate the booklets. But when its inhouse like the orange bricks it sucks.

The orange bricks are outsourced to a man who colour corrected porn, lol.

Do they just clash in the manga? That sounds pretty awesome.

Their first fight right?

More or less IIRC. There is some chatter, but a tonne less than the manga.

So has anyone heard an update on this?

Decided to buy 1.1 bluray today as I wanted to see how good these transfers were, especially since future releases may not be as good :(

It's lame because I've waited for years....YEARS to get a somewhat definitive DBZ set and it looked like this was going to be it.
