These sets will be 4:3.

It appears these may not be the masters we were expecting after all...
I'm glad I havent started buying them on bluray yet. I want DBZ on bluray so bad though.

Will I be purchasing the Saiyan saga for a 5th time?!?

Ah hah. The press release was vague but it still gave the impression it was a new transfer. I'm surprised but not a whole lot. It's also the pleasant kind of surprised.

4:3 on blu-ray? Blasphemy!

But with no redrawn scenes! Yay!

And the Faulconer music optional! Eh!

But with tons of filler! Yay! Er, no way!

I dunno. I will be picking these up when they've all been released, until then I'll get Kai in the meantime.

Looks pretty great. Wonder if it's an all new script too.

They aren't going to redub all of Z, and still keep the old dub's music as an audio track. That's like them still keeping the Ocean dub of movies 1-3 on their discs (which would be awesome, but I digress).

They'll probably use the script and voice audio from the American Dragon Box releases.

So glad they aren't the Orange box set transfers. Will I finally be able to rewatch DBZ with the music I love!? I sure hope so!

Now the question is, do I buy and rewatch the Saiyan saga for the millionth time or wait awhile. Who am I kidding, I'm going to have the Saiyan saga again at launch. I have the VHS / DVD originals, luckily I only watched the uncut episodes next instead of buying them (didn't like all the red theme they had going), bought the first two season sets, got the first Kai release, and skipped out on Dragon Box because of the music.

I have so much early DBZ it's ridiculous.

So is the 4:3 how it was MADE, or how it was PRESENTED?

Because if it's MADE that way, then that's one thing. I'll buy it. But if they cropped/stretched it to fit 4:3 from the original cells, then I'll wait for the widescreen version to come out.

This was an 80's anime. What do you think? :P

Heck even Ouran (a 2006 anime) was 4:3. I don't think the widescreen changeover happened for most anime until like 2007.

Ouran is a bad example. BONES is just slow. :P They still don't even animate their TV series in HD, just 540p.

But yeah 16:9 TV anime really didn't start until the 2000s.

This is basically the American Dragon Boxes on Blu-ray with the dub music optional. So good.

No, it won't be the American version of the Dragon Boxes. 3 People can't finish color correcting, and restoring a 291 episode series. Nor will these sets contain the footage missing from Funimation's old masters.

Which is the exact same dub from 2000, and 2004 (Ultimate Uncut)...

Oh really? I thought Uncut had a totally new dub, Dragon Boxes too.

And this won't include the cut footage? That's sort of lame then.

Anyways don't say what Funimation "can't" do, they're sort of good at surprising people. :P As this 4:3 announcement shows.

They redubbed the episodes they paid Ocean to do for the Ultimate Uncut. Ultimate Uncut's dub ended at like 76 I believe. The rest of the episodes were just the old shitty Funimation dub.

As for footage, there are outside incidental things, like eyecatches, title cards, and next episode previews that Funimation's original masters didn't have, and they didn't get until the Dragon Box.

Damn so its not just he Orange Boxes on Blu ray. FUCK, I am one of the suckers that has bought almost off of their shit. I tried not to buy Kai and now I have 1,2,3, and 5. Then I find out about the music scandal. Then the Kai Season sets.

Ugh, these only have 17 eps.? thats too much to buy again.

Ah, sorry. Misread the title. Thought this was just announcing the Dragonball Kai Blu-Ray stuff (hence my question about whether it was in 4:3 or not). Yeah, I understand that the older stuff was almost 100% exclusively done in 4:3 (some exceptions, I know).

DBZ Kai is 4:3 on Blu-ray too.

Takao said:
Which is amazing because in Japan Kai is 16:9 on DVD IIRC, lol.

It's 16:9 on DVD and on broadcast TV.

It's technically 16:9 on Blu-ray but it has mattes on the left and right to keep from TVs automatically stretching it.

What footage was missing?

So wait, what?

I've only bought Volume 1 of Kai so far. Should I buy the rest or am I going to have to start over?

Edit: Ah, I see this is just about DBZ Blu-Ray. Not interested in Blu-Ray. Carry on.

Wait, I am confused what were people looking for. What are these sets?

These are Funimation in house remaster/restoration of the 291 Dragon Ball Z anime series that aired in Japan from 1989 to 1995. These sets will be 4:3, restored by hand, and only released on Blu-Ray.

Funimation previously "restored" Z in a 16:9 cropped, and heavily DVNRed release in 2007 (the Orange Bricks). Funimation would then license Toei's Dragon Box masters, a painstakingly frame by frame hand done restoration of Z on DVD in 2009.

The title references Dragon Ball Kai, an edited version of Dragon Ball Z that ran for 97 episodes in Japan from 2009 to 2011. Dragon Ball Kai is in HD, and was released on Blu-Ray in 4:3.

What are the chances of them actually completing this new set? They seem to have a small team...and 17 eps per disk. Damn.

Maybe I'll just pick up a secondhand Dragon Box set from people upgrading.

70/30, it mostly depends on sales. DBZ is Funi's cash cow and multiple sets of these would have to bomb for them to drop it, I'd think.

I think its only on the Nicktoons version right now that has it since the DVDs currently out were released before it was found out Kai's composer was stealing music from films.
Any details or links? I love reading about these types of things.

He (Yamamoto) composed music for Kai, which beared strong resemblance to other soundtracks, mainly from western made movies.

The Kai boxsets out later will have a replacement score, but volumes 1-4 are the only one's with Yamamoto's score

Trailer and behind the scenes for these Blu-Ray Remastered sets.

There's also been a bunch of screenshots released, but I won't post them due to them being from Funimation, which could mean a product that's not necessarily indicative of the final release.

So um... what's the word on these... better than Dragon Box or what?

Does this have original Vegeta or new Vegeta? If it has the old one I'll get this probably

4:3 restored blu is good enough for me

New. I'm with you in much preferring the Ocean cast. Funi's Texas dub sounds like dog shit.

Has the old Vegeta for the Saiyan saga I'm pretty sure.

I'll pick up the Android/Cell sagas just like I did for the Orange box series. I can't stand the voices to bother collecting the rest of the series.

This reminds me I need to finish collecting the old ocean dub on dvd.
