Whats the Current Status of GAF in general right now?

It’s slower, but more laid back and friendly. You don’t have to worry about being banned unless you attack/insult another poster. I enjoy reading and posting here more now. The moderation is great.

Where as at ResetERA personal insults, attacks, calling people racist, calling people Nazi's are are perfectly fine even if none of the claims lack any merit. As long as it is from a place on the extreme left side of the political spectrum towards anybody else who is left but not left enough and people to the right of that.

As someone who only joined earlier this year and has like 11 posts; my opinions don't hold much weight. However, I figured I'd throw a little bit of positivity (albeit kinda lame lmfao) anyway. I heard horror stories of this place from various friends and outlets, so I figured I'd give this place a look for myself. Not bad. Maybe it's because all my past forum experiences have also been chaotic, but I really don't mind this place. Will that opinion change? Maybe. But in this moment I'm actually enjoying being here. I haven't genuinely enjoyed being on a forum in quite some time, so it's a nice change.

All posts are judged on their own merits tbh. Make well-considered posts and you're golden in most people's eyes.

Glad to hear you're enjoying the time here, I will pray your opinion doesn't change and will try my best to make sure the more positive outlook of this forum stays.

This thread might be under observation from people from the other site. My ban was supposed to be up at 12am today but when I just checked it now it's up January 6th 2019. A week to a month, and all Ive done since the ban is make 1 post here. LOL, I only wanted to post in the NFL thread anyway.

And your champing at the bit to go back there?

You into S&M? Lol.

NFL thread is dead here. Football season will be over in 2 months, as will my desire to post.

Its also funny how you turned my post into me dying to go back there rather then me just pointing out a funny situation. I'm not mad about my ban extension, I just thought it was odd.

Yeah they’re known to do that. You’re pretty much marked for a perm in future now. They’re an authoritarian cult trying to erase any trace of wrongthink.

I don't think it has anything to do with lurking this place. They often have initial bans handed out by the mod team and then higher-ups often review it and offer a harsher ban.

Is there anyone who you can talk to? Maybe someone you can email?

Hopefully that's not true. Imagine walking into Starbucks and they refuse to serve you because you went to Dunkin' yesterday. That would be hella petty. So I wouldn't assume that's what happened.

Not saying we want you to leave here lol. Never that. Hopefully you don't be a stranger here. But maybe someone here can put you in touch with whoever you need to contact since both sites have members that belong and visit both sites? Anyone???

There’s a lot of people here that follow the NFL, but you are right that the thread is dead. It’s like we’re all waiting for someone else to start posting - maybe we should start a new thread for NFL talk? I was thinking about doing something for the playoffs.

I think some of the community threads need to be taken out of the off-topic community forum for a while and put in the main OT. Just until they gain some momentum.

That just reminded me of a ban I got here like ten years ago on my old kbear account. It was by Dragona because I said scientifically there’s no question being shaven leads to less BO. I forget if it was in reference to vag or armpit hair. Anyway so I posted it on another board and minutes later it got changed from a week to 6 months 😆

Online members seem to have doubled since the last time i checked (a few weeks ago?).

Currently at 230+ compared to just 100 something.

I wonder what the number was before the collapse?

I’ve noticed the same thing but in a slightly different context — some of the threads I’ve posted in have had multiple new posts while I was typing my reply. That’s always a good sign in terms of traffic. This isn’t Evilore exaggeration; it’s absolutely, 100% improved markedly over the past month.

Those reviews take place the same day the ban was issued, not the day they expire.

They regard you higher if you did account suicide a year ago. After all registration had also the option to post your GAF account link for supposedly easier migration.

Off-Topic has now picked up. Front page used to have bottom posts from yesterday or earlier, now the bottom one is some 12h old.

I think it would probably be better to just make a new thread for that community instead of relying on an old one. Probably helps kill discussion when someone goes in and sees that there is nearly a year+ between the last post and the more recent ones.

I agree with you. Huge disconnect in a thread that has a time gap.

Weird question: What are community threads and how/why are they different to a normal OT? I’ve never understood them. Why are they a seperate section?

Community Threads are about a very specific topic that keeps conversation about that topic in one place. They were given their own place so that they don't keep random Off Topic conversations from getting views/attention. For example, Red Dead Redemption 2. Conversations about the story, its gameplay and cool things you experienced can all be located in one, easy to find location instead of having 10-15 threads about the topic.

Thanks and understood, but how is that different to just posting that stuff in the OT for the game?

For example - imagine a Community Thread about a specific game. It places posts into a certain sort of context... So for example, if I were to say that my housekeeper toon fell out of love with her husband, who was crippled by being stabbed in the eye during a native raid, therefore Claire left him for another guy about the house, (Which broke his heart and eventually led to his depression, drug overdose, paralysis, and eventual confinement to a cry chamber) It'd make sense, 'cause it was in the Rimworld OT.

See example below:

Normal OT = Final Fantasy XV |OT| = Can discuss in detail about FFXV, but other FFs would be offtopic.

Community OT = Final Fantasy Community |OT| = Can discuss about every FF game, FF related stuff like merchandise, themed cafes, collaborations, etc.

To me the community threads fostered the creation of a completely separate culture from the rest of the forum. It made for a sometimes signficant barrier to entry for anyone outside that group. I remember the french culture community thread - it started talking about France and its culture, but then evolved into everyone only speaking french in the thread. Did not encourage anyone tangentially interested in French culture to join in.

Seems the Nintendo Direct is pushing the numbers ever higher. GAF is now at 263 members online and 2085 total visitors. It's interesting how big the amount of lurkers here is, the fear of retribution is real. GAF is now around 20% of Era traffic in terms of people online. I would say that about 50% of Era members online is the point when things get out of hand.

If they are hardcore ERA members, things would get out of hand even with 2%. Those people are civil only with threats and on a leash

255 online at the time of posting this, I’ve seen it get fairly close to 300 at times. Organic, sustainable growth is best anyway.

I've been thinking about resurrecting FGCGAF OT for a bit, but I don't know if there's enough interest in fighting games here.

I don't feel like there is enough interest to keep a thread lively. But maybe, who knows.

I've been looking for a good FGC forum because this place doesn't talk fighting games really, and it's like there are literally none active. SRK was on the brink of shutting down a year or two ago or something? But now it's still up, with very low activity. And holy shit it is the ugliest and most user-unfriendly message board I have ever seen, without question. There is a shitload of information there, and it's just such a chore to read.

I did read a thread there recently asking if Discord was hurting the FGC, because it basically killed FGC forum activity and it is not a database of information. Interesting mix of newer people saying "Discord is easier and faster to get answers", and older people saying "yes but you can't beat the functionality of a forum and searchable database". They might be right about Discord, but I think it's a goddamn shame there is still no great repository for fighting game information. I watch FGC events every night, it seems like the scene is getting bigger and bigger, yet there is really no big community gathering place online, other than like Reddit, which is also a bad place to create a comprehensive database of info in my opinion.

The only solution to driving those visitors away?

Unfettered shitposting.

Nymphae Nymphae I'd play FGs with other GAFers. The problem is no one wants to party up and practice. It's not a Discord thing, either, since I don't think I've seen a single person use the #matchmaking room in GAF's Discord.

I probably would too, I think the poster I was responding to was just talking about a general FGC thread though. I'm practicing most nights, I'm always down for a few games, I usually play SF but I do have some ArkSys games.

One of us FGC'ers should just make an OT up and see what happens

I'm quite satisfied with the tighter community here. It's much easier to follow the posts and the atmosphere is generally much more relaxed. I also start to learn more about each poster since its usually the same people who post in every thread.

Meh, you can only improve by playing with people better than yourself! I'm not that great either, but I've gradually come to focus on simply improving my play rather than winning, and FG's are generally much more fun to me now, even when I'm losing hard, because I'm using those matches to understand my weaknesses and gradually improve. Definitely something you really need to have a desire to develop though, it's a long slog. I played FG's for years and would always stop at some point with each new release because I wasn't taking them seriously enough - I'd mash and wake up DPs all day, and then wonder why I was getting so mad online when I got my ass handed to me. I didn't have a scene where I grew up really, so even discovering the most basic ass strategies and FG tips took a long time, I never figured it out myself just playing the CPU and mashing with buds occasionally, and the games themselves are still to this day absolutely terrible imo at getting newbies up to speed with decades of FGC terminology and tips and tricks that are absolutely essential to any sort of high level play (some are far better than others, Skullgirls has a great tutorial mode)

It's fine, but people talk about/reference Era way too often, it's obnoxious. Wish people could keep it to the community thread it belongs in.

Just stopping back into the thread. Yup, this place is great now. Lots of different ideas and posts with the majority of posts being at least somewhat thoughtful. Its like a breath of fresh air. The moderation is also on point. They are just calling balls and strikes, not trying to force their own agenda.

Wish the gaming side would pick back up a little more, but other than that. Love it here now.

Edit: I finally made it! A post liked by Evillore. I have arrived Gaf.
