Would you be ok with current gaming tech stopping?

Once what is rumored/announced gets out, would you be ok if there was no more gaming tech releases?

100 TF should be more than enough for good visuals at 4k quality with no compromise. Developers are not optimizing the games like they used to do in old days. I will never play anything on 30fps ever.

We can always do more. More physics, more framerate, better resolution, more intelligent NPCs etc.

There are some games that are perfect the way they are, like Cuphead or Celeste, for example. Increase in resolution or fidelity wouldnt change a thing.

But 90% of gaming could always benefit from better hardware.

"Oh it looks great already", sure, but imagine it at native 4K. "Oh, but it plays great at 60 already", sure, but imagine it at 120 FPS.

"Oh but the ceiling became too high. Most devs cant make a game that looks as good as something from ND and other big studios". Ok then, so just make a "last gen" game running at 60/120 and 4K. I doubt that people would think it looks bad.

Bloober team made one of the best looking games this gen. It's as easy as its ever been to make a good looking game using popular engines.

Well the new games being released clearly are not using the new tech to it's maximum or even anywhere near, but new tech is a selling point on it's own whether it gets used or not so it won't stop.

For flatscreen games I see no problem even if we stopped at the PS4 generation. For VR it's another story. I can't imagine what kind of power would we need for 16K per eye (for resolution where you can't see pixels anymore) at 120fps (without reprojection), Raytracing, 210 degree FOV, just to reach PS4-level graphics. Not in my lifetime I guess.

(Cries in Silent Hill 2 at low settings, 1215p per eye upscaled from DLSS Performance so in reality it's more like 512p native, barely reaching 60fps on a 3070 Ti)

I thought about it some more and I really think we are good where we're at. I don't have a ps5 pro but if they ever have a bundle with the stand and the disc drive for cheaper, I really wouldn't mind riding that beat until 2030 or even more.

No, until 4k@60, full PT and advanced physics are default settings in all games.

No. But even if graphics hit an end point I want them to keep investing in tech to reduce power draw, size and cost. Input innovations etc still interest me. They also need to do something to get dev times back to 2 / 3 years.
 
I literally just want fun games. I don't give a shit about ultra realism. The majority of games I play on PC are like at least 10 years old or more. PS5 I also focus on playing stuff that looks fun, regardless of graphics.

Well, wouldn't it be nice to let the artists see how far they can go with the current technology for a stretch? I'm sure even UE4 hasn't been utilized to it's fullest yet.

I wanna hit Black Mirror-levels of tech. I won’t be satisfied until I have tiny screens inside my eyeballs, so I can literally speedrun Mario 3 while I’m asleep.

I see a point where when achieve full ray tracing + 4k + 60fps, the next step in graphics will need a truckload of computing power or a advancement in AI so big that they will have to focus on other things like a bigger scope, physics etc.

And we are not that far from that.

make it 4K 240Hz PT for me.

8K is not worth it and I can't tell any difference between 240-360Hz.

PC will never stop moving forward. while I'd be happy to stay at 4K 240Hz I'd be disappointed if PC couldn't do 8K 480Hz...just for the sake of it.
Can the eye really see a difference at 480 HZ? I thought 360 Hz was the visible limit. I could be wrong of course.

A big part of my enjoyment is the tech side so no, I don't want them to stop. I can't afford everything and that is OK, it's the same with any other hobby like audio or photography. There is always something better around the corner and I don't get upgrade anxiety.

I rather have the option and decide to spend or not than not having it.

While it's true most developers are not great at getting the maximum benefit out of the hardware, there are some that do. Those guys make it worthwhile.

I'm all about options. I respect people that don't care about the tech side and are OK playing games 1 or 2 gens behind. We all enjoy different things and that's OK. Fortunately the pie is big enough for all of us to have a piece.

I'd be happy if raw visual fidelity eg. texture quality, 4K resolution, 60fps framerate minimum stayed at this level. You can try and push detail further and further but in the end you are fighting more against budget and manpower constraints rather than the console's horsepower. You also risk pushing into awful uncanny valley territory with every generation.

I think a case should be made for denser world design and doing more with physics and interactivity. Most games look beautiful now but the environments just feel like set dressing which you can put a few bullet holes in and that's about it. I remember being blown away by Euphoria physics in GTA4 and it feels like little progress has been made since then. There are some standouts like The Finals, Teardown and Tears of the Kingdom but I would've expected those advancements to be the norm by now. Most games aren't even approaching Bad Company levels of destruction and that came out in 2008.

Even tech like ray-tracing, which is pretty ubiquitous now, is being under-utilized in terms of game design. There are whole genres like stealth and horror which have been begging for ray-tracing and have done nothing with it. It offers perfect dynamic shadows and reflections, yet the bad guys can't spot your shadow coming or see your reflection in a puddle - only Hitman 2 (2018) did that in recent memory with working mirrors and it didn't even need ray-tracing, just smart programming.

I think there's enough juice in a PS5 Pro to last 6+ more years. PSSR will be refined. The games look great. Developers OBVIOUSLY need more time than usual to optimize for these boxes (their output has been sub par). I guess I'm old school. They should try to maximize these boxes as they are instead of releasing new consoles too often. We used to see miracles at the end of the life of the old ones. I think PC architecture has had a negative effect in this respect. Easier to port - harder (or less incentive) to optimize.

Incidentally, if I were Microsoft, I'd also cut the Series S off in a year (announce now) and release a Pro competitor console in that timeframe in the Series console lineup and compete on that level. Keep the Series X as the new entry console as PlayStation does.
