Whats the status of your brand new U.S PSP topic. (dead pixels, stuck button, etc...)

So I went to the Gamestop midnight launch to get my PSP,and it was a nightmare I arrived at 11:45 PM, and there was about a 100 people in front of me. I went inside the store at around 1:45 AM in the morning a solid 2 hour wait outside in the cold. It wouldn't of been so bad but I stepped into a big puddle and both my feet got wet standing in 34 degree weather with wet feet for 2 hours is not fun. It was snowing and hailing the floor was all slushy it was miserable. If anyone is interested I preordered at the gamestop in broadway, and astor right by New York University. I wished I brought by digicam to takes picks but I forgot it home.

Finally got home at around 2:30 AM, with much apprehension I opened the box and inside a cardboard inlet there was a puffy styrophome type wrapper. I very cautiously took it out, immediatly under a bright light I notice 3 faint hairline scatches. I immediatly rip open the instructions and take out the cleaning cloth, and wiped the PSP no good, I snorted in disgust for this did not bode well. I put in the battery and fumled with the battery cover for several minutes (seriously) it did not go in right one side would stick out a little.

Palms sweaty I turned on the PSP and inputed the nickname (Lancelet Pink is the nickname also my xbox gamertag for those of you who didn't know), time, and other stuff. So far so good the screen looked good no signs of a dead pixel, I immediatly put in wipeout pure and crossed my fingers. It booted and a bright white screen with the PSP text appeared I furiously combed the screen with my eyes and much to my delight, there was no signs of a dead pixels, YES!!! this was awesome news, it felt like I won a prize seriously!!! :D

I also pressed the square button over a 100 times to see if it would get stuck. I pressed it in rapid succesion, slow and hard, (get your minds out of the gutter, perverts) and alternated with other buttons. The good news is the square button felt just like the other face buttons.

The final test administered by me was the twisting test to see if the UMD would come flying out, I gently twisted it, and started twisting with more force up to a reasonable level, the good news is the UMD stayed put, the bad news was the UMD slot moved a little I dont know how this will pan out with further use of the PSP, so this test is still ongoing I suppose...

Overall I'm satisifed with my PSP handheld, I was very worried I would get a dud with multiple dead pixels, a wonky square button, and a deadly tactical UMD launcher (joke based on the ps2 hype where congress was worried the PS2 was powerful enough to computate complex geometry for launching missile capability) Ok so it wasn't that funny but hey it's 5 AM right now.

MY PSP:

just 3 hairline scratches, better get a screen protector ASAP, I'm hearing good things about the Exim brand.

So how did your U.S PSP fare?

crap it came out blurry I'm to tired to take another pic, it is the bootup screen for wipeout pure, not a dead pixel in site. =)

That's because it's set on evil, just change it to good, or at the very least neutral on the systems setting menu.

(Simpsons Treehouse of horror joke forget which one), too tired to google a picture.

It was for the Krusty Doll.

Anyhow, I'll probably boot mine up in the parking lot and check for tolorable spots/ammounts of any pixel issues. And if it's not too crowded and I have a shot at getting another, return it.

No dead pixel tests, but I totally messed up the screen protector installation. Just have a mess of dust particles and fingerprints attached to that adhesive side which I have had no luck trying to get rid of.

Is the battery already in PSP? If not, is the box, psp, battery sealed in separate bags? Just want to know if I can check for deadpixel without opening everything or anything.

Dammit upon closer inspection it has 4 dead pixels, and 2 specs of dust under the screen. =( It's not visible on the bright white screen but when the screen is black you can see it.

There are two in the extreme left side of the screen near the middle, there are two in the extreme lower part of the screen with the two dust specks near them. I just called Gamestop and they are sold out. And they said they can't reserve one of the next shipment for me. =( Bastards after I spent over $600 dollars alone for PSP stuff there.

Actually I dont think it's dead pixels, it's morel likely stuck pixels.

So far, no problems. I only did a quick check for dead/stuck pixels though, nothing exhaustive. Button response seems fine. Haven't tried launching a UMD yet either ;)

Everything's perfect aside from the fact that my Value Pack didn't include Spider-Man 2 or the wrist strap. Sony already took care of that and will send them to me in 24 hours.

Not sure if this is a problem, but is the Memory Stick door supposed to be really loose when you open it to insert or remove the stick? It feels so rubbery.

From page 13 of the manual

LCD screen
Red, blue, or green spots (bright spots) or black spots (dark spots) may appear in certain locations on the LCD screen. The appearance of such spots is a normal occurance associated with LCD screens and is not a sign of malfunction. LCD screens are made using highly precise technology.
However, a very small number of dark pixels or continuously lit pixels exist on each screen. Also, a distorted image may remain on the screen for several seconds after the system has been turned off.

It's not, they're in seperate bags. Some people say their PSPs were pre-charged but mine wasn't so you might also need to unpack the adapter and the plug thingy for the adapter (2 seperate bags).

No scratches, no dead pixels, no stuck buttons.

It appears that my UMD slot hangs slightly misaligned when in the closed position but its been reading the UMD's fine. Need to try the stress test on flying UMDs.

My Loot :

PSP, Twisted Metal Head On, THUG Remix, Lumines :D

That's unacceptable man! You get that thing replaced ASAP!

I have a small stuck pixel (white) in the upper right corner. I don't really notice it unless the screen is totally black.

Yea mine is the upper left corner. I have two other minor ones, but nothing bad enough to BOYCOTT THE PSP over.

Seems like most people are getting dead/stuck pixels. I've got 3 myself. Gonna try to exchange it for another one, but with the majority of people reporting them - I wonder how long they will allow it.

One dead pixel. Not really noticeable. No scratches. Square button is flawless; responds perfectly even as I hammered on it in a rage at Darkstalkers.

And Lyte Edge is smoking crack. It's nearly impossible to pull off a FB motion with the D-pad on the PSP, to say nothing of a DP or HC. (I've probably played more Darkstalkers/Nightwarriors than this forum combined, so don't give me that weaksauce shit.) And with 24 MB of available non-OS reserved RAM, why the hell does Darkstalkers have loading in between matches? Capcom sucks.

Launch was a horror. When I have time, I'll tell the full tale: a sordid tale of a DS fanboy with a syndrome, a surly gadgeteer know-it-all, and yours sexy truly.

1st PSP: 7 dead pixels; 5 in one big clump in the top-left of the screen, two others elsewhere

traded for

2nd PSP: Perfect so far.

As of now, ::knock on wood:: my PSP is perfect. God... Ridge Racer... So amazing. I played it whenever I got the chance on campus today. This is EXACTLY what I hoped it would be. I'm having trouble creating an account for TM: HO online right now, but otherwise...

1st PSP had a dead pixel almost in the exact center of the screen.

Exchanged it for a 2nd unit that is perfect. No pixels, scratches, dust, etc.

But I'm sure the dust and scratches are a matter of time.

Can someone post pics pf their PSP headphones, unrolled? Mine look weird, the wire of the left earphone is really short and the right one is long. I tried to get them centered but it doesn't work.

No dead/stuck pixels, no screen scratches, and the first thing I did after verifying that the machine would boot is attach a Martin Fields screen protector. (The MF is amazingly clear, and when they say "mild adhesive," they mean it -- it's even less sticky than the PDA screen protectors I used to buy.)

I had to go to work immediately, so I couldn't do more than boot Wipeout Pure, but it's a damn amazing piece of hardware.

One stuck pixel. No scratches or dust.

This will be my "trial unit", that I can hand over to kids and coworkers without any stress. 90 day replacement policies rock.

I have some dead pixels, but they're barely noticeable. It took me like a half hour to tell if that's what they were or not.

Where are you guys buying your PSPs, if they'll take them with everything all torn open?

They're all like that.

How long has it been since your last pair of headphones? That is an EXTREMELY common design...

:D I'm old school, the last ones I had were plastic ones that came with an RCA discman, purchased in about 2001.

Almost perfect. No dead pixels, but a spec of dust or two in the PSP that I can just barely notice when the screen is right up to my face and it's black.

The front side collects quite a bit of dust though, so I really need to get a screen protector soon

Square button is perfect. There's a little small bump in the plastic above the d-pad, but it's not on the screen, so not a big deal.

Are you serious? It feels and looks ridiculous.
