What's up with the "this gen lasted too long" argument?

I keep seeing it pop up in GAF threads but I don't understand it. Personally I"m glad that I didn't have to buy a new console back in 2010. The games library for every console just got richer as time goes on and the graphics and sound are still pretty good. So why does it seem like all of GAF wishes that this gen ended early. Do you guys just like spending money? Is it a psychology thing? I just don't get it.

You know how the absolute best thing you can find instantly becomes the standard and everything else is shit? Yeah, it's that line of thinking at work.

I'm still building up my GC, Wii, 360 libraries.

Had a blast with Batallion Wars the other day.

Most anything after the PSX/N64 days still holds up for me.

It's not ending early. Compared to previous generations, it's late. That's pretty much it. You said you bought a console in 2010, a lot of people bought theirs in 2005/2006 - for you it might feel early, but for a lot of us, it's late.

Edit: Yeah, misread your post...

I think it lasted 1 year too long but overall I was pleased with how long this generation went.

The reason you have people wanting a new generation is that is the prime time new IP and new ideas come into play. A big publisher like EA isn't going to take a risk with an original property in the 7th year of a system's lifespan. The first couple years of any generation are the times all the publisher and developers throw their games to wall and see what sticks to iterate on for the remainder of the generation.

Some folks want hardware progress on a cycle of 4-6 years, others don't care. Both answers are correct, depending on who you are and what you want.

Performance in games has gotten worse as developers have tried to make these old consoles do more stuff. IQ and framerate have suffered enough to convince me that I needed a gaming PC in my life.

I'm looking forward to games not held back by 7-8 year old tech.

For me it's when new games don't impress graphically or technically any more, and sequels look basically the same graphically and similar gameplay wise as previous games.

Take Last of Us, phenomenal game in every way, but held back by the tech.

People want prettier games I guess. I don't care much about animating individual blades of grass or hair physics though.

Another argument is the current generation of consoles is reaching saturation/maturity.

I'm tired of "pretty good".

I want bigger, better, faster, shinier.

I just want a big library of games I don't

I think you misread my post, I've had a 360 since 2006. I'm just saying I'm glad this gen didn't end in 2010.

It hasn't been too long, but I can understand the need to want new...

Everyone always wants a weenie to look forward to. Which is fine, and the new consoles are exciting, but this generation has been the best ever in gaming and it was in part due to its length. Mastery of the hardware is when games begin to shine because you spend less time thinking "damn that's awesome but it would be hard to implement and take forever."

Some fun facts

Naughty dog has released 4 games this generation, all new franchises. Each one was revered for its graphical fidelity. Before the ps3, it was a relavtively unknown developer. Now its AAA+ status

Gears of war released four games also this generation, the first acclaimed as the first game that looked truly "next gen"

Two of the greatest Mario games ever were released.

When you look at what's been accomplished, its staggering.

It's the main reason why some of the IPs we have gotten this gen seem so tired now. New generations often bring about new IPs, which we could have used a while ago.

When did you buy your PS3 or 360?

framerates and image quality kept dropping more and more as time went on.

If they had been making 60 fps 1080p games instead of add shineys it wouldn't have been an issue.

Consumerism at its worst imo. When games stop being shiny enough, you try to find other ways to make them good. But that doesn't sell enough hardware.

It's long in a business perspective. In reality, and as this past gen proved, consoles can last a long time and it can only be beneficial to the dedicated consumers, the hardware is figured out and maximized in performance, which is why you get the best games when the consoles are about to die, however the actual market potential shrinks, along with hype and there is zero growth, yeah hardware still sells but software not so much, so you need to inject new hype with shiny new toys.

Yeah fuck this new shit. I wish we just stopped at the NES. I stopped upgrading my PC 10 years ago too.

This gen has existed since 2005, and 99% of its paradigms were mature since 2009 (DLC, PS+, console apps/media streaming, installing games to HDD, etc). While there are still excellent games coming out even this year, most of the heavy lifting and truly new ideas in gameplay that were specific to the current hardware and what it could do stopped happening like, 2 years ago...which was SIX years into the gen (5 at least for PS3 and Wii).

The portables that had primacy before 3DS' release were even longer in the tooth than that - they were out in 2004.

This was when even installing a PC game via DVD instead of CD was still a little novel. This was before Steam was truly what it is now. This was when people's cellphones played Snake, clones of Tetris or Breakout, or garbage 8-bitesque versions of whatever was relevant at the time. Think of all the franchises that were still fresh, or non-existent in 2004 or 2005, or even 2006. This has been a really long gen.

Definitely glad 3DS and Wii U are out. Definitely glad Vita is out. Definitely glad PS4 and XB1 are coming out soon.

Yes, we like spending money and want nice shiny things.

Who says you have to buy a new console when it comes out?

8 years of the same hardware, genre diversity of mainstream games had become pretty stale, current consoles are nearly maxed out, fledgling sales.

The last point proves the most that mainstream market is tired of HD twins. Market contraction is one thing, but sales are hitting lowest levels since nearly 15 years and many high budget games are underperforming. It's high time for change.

Funny how almost the exact same people praise the next-gen high-end consoles yet there isn't anything next-gen that wasn't there before

My backlog of games I already own will probably last me a year. I also plan on grabbing the things I skipped over the past generation due to low time and money.

Unless the division turns out to be an irresistible multiplayer experience with friends, it looks like the 3ds will be my only system purchase for the next couple years.

Oh, well there's smash 4. So i guess a wiiu and at least one game happens next year.

In for a rude awakening when you find out it wasn't the consoles responsible for holding back tech.

I just don't get it.

I did not either until I built a gaming rig when BF3 was released. I recently started to play my PS3 because of The last of us. Don't know why, but I got the urge to play Red Dead once more.

What a shock... I don't know if its because I wasn't able to see it back then, but I know I do. It's ugly, screen tearing all over, textures looks awful.

Then for a laugh, I downloaded the Far Cry 3 DLC demo. Woah... Yeah, this gen is over.

It's not just about graphics and being "pretty good". There are serious limitations that current gen hardware imposes on how games are made and this translates to the PC version even though it has updated graphics. World size, enemy count, destructible environments and physics, AI, these are all things hamstrung by 512mb RAM.
