When the hell is Growlanser Generations coming out?

November as I recall. I'm playing through it now currently. I'll have another thread going up probably within a few days like my other Growlanser thread that's on the first few pages here.

I know you have rediculously long impressions in another thread, but is Growlanser 1's story in any way related to 2&3? Are we missing anything by just getting the latest two installments?

Growlanser I is the middle of the series. Growlanser III is set (long) before I, and Growlanser II comes (very) shortly after I. You can enjoy them knowing nothing about GLI, and there are historical fill-ins that tie to GLI and flesh out some of what was missed as it relates to II.

The game should be out in the first part of November (I think the IGN piece mentioned this, didn't they?). Lots and lots of review copies have gone out, and the impressions you're starting to see are there because the people playing the games wanted to provide an update while they're playing the complete game set for actual review. We didn't send out preview copies, they were really finished review copies, and the fact that sites are doing previews while they play is just a bonus.

Thanks for your patience to this point. This project has been a long road, but if we hadn't done it, I can state for a fact that no one else would have. Atlus passed, and no one else is crazy enough to take on a niche project with scores of voiced characters and almost 10 hours of speech (that's about as much pure dialogue as 2.5 seasons of a sitcom), especially after Sony mandated that the games couldn't ship separately.

It will come out when it's damn ready to come out!

Which will be sometime in the near/far future.

I think Thousand Arms had 12 hours of speech. It wasn't WD caliber though.

You guys are SURPRISED that a working designs game has a floating release date? Haven't followed many of their games, have you?

Thousand Arms was Atlus' "let's do a game with a ton of dialogue" game. I notice that they haven't done many of those since. How much speech did Disgaea have, altogether?

DFS.

10/19 seems to be the concrete release date

No, that's a guess by others. We haven't put a new date on our schedule because we don't know for certain, just that it will be in November, and probably the early part.

Since review copies are out and the pack-in stuff for the deluxe pack is finished and ready to go, we're very close, we just don't have a hard date yet.

Thanks for keeping us up to date on how Growlanser 2/3 fit in as well as a general idea of when to look for it in stores. And congratulations on finishing the project - I've been in the industry long enough to know what the pain of a long project timeframe is, so it's good to hear from somebody who's made it out of the tunnel alive.

I wonder how the game will do in early November, given the massive software lineup on all fronts, though.

Good question. We have a handful of the DX editions pre-ordered in my store, though, which I think it a decent sign. At $90 a pop, getting a few in every store would probably equal a nice final take. Not including sales of the regular edition.

and, no offense to vic intended, due to the fact that GL 2 & 3 look like PS1.1 games. if it weren't for the gorgeous, huge, hi-res urushihara artwork....

You definitely don't need to know about Growlanser I to enjoy II and III. However, it does increase the enjoyment of the II and III games to know what happened and what is told in Growlanser I. If there's anyone that doesn't want to play the first game, I can start up a thread explaining concepts and characters from the first game. All spoiler tagged of course.

I'm guessing that it was never released in english. Why not make a FAQ? I'm sure it would be in enormous demand once 2&3 are released. I'd love to read it.

Our RPGs have rarely been anywhere near the graphical forefront, so it's not like people buying them for looks. I would hope that they're coming back for gameplay and story in roughly that order, and Growlanser has that in spades. It's the reason we fought so hard for the release in the US. Because they were in Japanese, no one else seemed to be able to get past the (non-large-talking-character) graphics, missing completely the fact that the gameplay's not really like anything else out there, and the large talking anime characters in-game haven't really been done well in a while. GLII has a stronger story, but GLIII has some really, really strong characters (Hugh/Viktor). As a whole, they're an insane value.

Advance preorders are going well so far, but we need to still get the word out to make it a nice success and ensure that we can keep doing these kind of games.

I've considered doing a full Guide for G1 but I don't have the time at the moment to do so.

Hugh = Roxxors.

Good to hear that Growlanser Generations is only about a month or so away. It's been so long in the making and seems to have been worth the wait.

Any word if John Truitt has done voice work for GG? It's always been cool hearing his work through the Lunar games.

So how are you staying afloat financially all this time? Still resting on the laurels of the income Lunar raked in as rumours say? Auctioning stuff off on eBay as I see from time to time?

With so many review copies sent out, I'm sure one of them is in the wrong hands if you know what I mean.

He's in it, but pretty briefly (maybe 50-60 spoken lines). If you weren't told, you probably wouldn't guess since it's a pretty non-John character (another one like that is Mumbles from Popful Mail).

I want the kid from O-Town in GG.

Vic, did he sell out? I bet he acts like he's too "cool" to be a dragon master now.

I don't think Ashley sold out so much as he's trying to get back IN. Haven't heard from him in almost a year, but last time he called he was supposed to have a solo album out this year, then...nothing. I'm sure I'll hear from him once he has some time. I *completely* understand what it's like to be buried in work. :)

I hope the artwork is sexy like Der Langrisser

I hope the artwork is sexy like Der Langrisser

If you're taking about Growlanser's art, given that Satoshi Urushihara does it, all the females are...well endowed, and the men are mostly bishounen-class. It will probably fit your definition of sexy as defined by Langrisser's art.

I hope the guide for Growlanser is as nice as the Arc the Lad Collection guide... the most amazing guide I've ever seen. I can't wait for this game... actually I can, since I have enough on my plate as is :P

Vic - are you guys still in the shooter business (especially, there's been a major resurgence of this genre lately)? If so, how about an English port of ESP Galuda? :P

After playing for the first time yesterday, all I can say is, wow! Not what I expected, and I mean that in an, "I already love SRPGs, but it's even better than the high hopes I had for it," kind of way. I thought I had a pretty clear idea from Shouta's impression of G1, but until I played a few battles in GII, I had no idea.

Been looking forward to this game for a while... But what's up with a new lunar? I could've sworn it was being rumored about years ago, but no word on it. What IS gamearts doing these days?

Rumor is that GameArts is doing Grandia Online, if I'm not mistaken.

Lunar 3 gets rumored about every 6 months or so for the last 6 years or so.

Since shooters were always money losers for us done right for the love of the genre (since when was the last time you saw a foil-stamped color manual on a shooter?) we used the money makers (rpgs) to subsidize the money-losers (shooters). It will be a while before we can do something like that again since we're just now getting our RPG train rolling again, but there's much love for the genre, still.

I guess what that means is tell eight or ten jillion friends to pick up Growlanser Generations so we can get the train back to full steam. We can't do the J strategy RPG dating-sim and some of the other RPGs you all want without some pocketbook love... :)
