They released the first parties Horizon Call of the Mountain, GT7 PSVR2 and Firewall Ultra during the first few months of the device. Did it with more games announced for the first year of PSVR2 than games were released in the first year of PSVR1, meaning they also have many 3rd party games to market.
And did it in probably the busiest year we saw in decades regarding important game releases in general, so their marketing team was also busy marketing other 1st and 3rd party non-VR PS5 games. On top of that, this year they also had to market many hardware and accesories announced or released: the new PS5 SKU and its detachable disc reader, different controllers including one with screen for remote play, earbuds and headsets etc.
There's a limited amount of stuff they can market, and they had to market a lot of stuff that was or will be released this or next year. Regarding PSVR2 1st parties, with 3 releases -the most recent one a handful months ago- for the first year probably they consider it's enough.
Once they think it's the right time to announce the next one (probably a few months before its release) and they have a marketing slot free for it they'll announce it. I don't think they'll release it in the first year, so I assume the next one would be released in Spring minimum or more likely later. I'd bet would be announced 3-9 months before its release.
You mean like Spider-Man 2, Stellar Blade, Rise of the Ronin, Wolverine, Death Stranding 2, Lost Soul Aside, Convallaria and I assume most o the China and India Hero Projects?
Regarding their next games to be announced, pretty likely will be the next SSM/Cory Barlog new IP, the next Team Asobi game, the narrative horror Until Dawn-like game by the former Until Dawn/Supermassive devs, the next open world Bend new IP or Ghost of Tsushima 2. ND is also working on at multiple unannounced games aside from Factions 2 and at least one of them is a new SP game. None of these games are GaaS.
We also know Firesprite has multiple games under development so even if they released the non-GaaS Horizon CoM this year they may announce something else soonish, but we know very little from their next projects and some may or may not be GaaS.
The majority of the Sony games under developent aren't GaaS. In fact most of the Sony GaaS we know weren't greenlighted during the Jim Ryan (CEO since April 2019) + Hermen Hulst (since September 2019) era, but instead were greenlighted before them:
- Dreams (known to be in delopment years before they became CEO)
- Destruction All Stars (released February 2021, must have been greenlighted earlier)
- Gran Turismo 7 (started after Gran Turismo Sport launch, which also is GaaS)
- Firewall Ultra (started after Firewall Zero Hour launch)
- Convallaria (if it's a GaaS -I think won't-, its first video was published March 2019)
- Helldivers 2 (started in 2015/2016 after Helldivers 1 launch)
- Concord (studio founded in 2018)
- Horizon Online (its game director Simon Larouche working on it since Feb. 2018 according to his LinkedIn)
- London Studio new IP (their previous game was released in May 2019 and before that they had 2 teams)
- Destiny 2 (already released when acquired)
- Marathon (already in development when acquired)
- Matter/new Bungie IP (already in development when acquired)
Most of the Sony games greenlighted in the Jim Ryan and Hermen Hulst era aren't GaaS, these are the ones known to be greentlighted by them and most of them aren't GaaS:
- Death Stranding 2 (started after DS1 launch)
- Ballistic Moon's (former Until Dawn/Supermassive devs) first game (studio founded in April 2019)
- New open world IP by Bend, which was pitched by Bend after Days Gone (Sony/PS Studios/Jim/Hermen approved the first pitch that Bend sent them after Days Gone 1, which was this new IP, they never received a Days Gone 2 pitch because the Bend studio boss blocked the directors from sending it to Sony)
- Ghost of Tsushima 2 (started after GoT1 launch)
- Multiple unannounced ND game(s) under development outside Factions 2, at least one of them SP (started after TLOU2 launch, not sure when)
- Wolverine (started after Morales launch)
- Team Asobi's next game (a 3d action platformer with humor bigger than the Astros) and multiple prototypes)
- Deviation's game (studio founded in 2020)
- Housemarque next game (started after Returnal release)
- Fairgame$ (even if they started to work on it at Google, maybe started production at Sony)
- Horizon 3 (pretty likely started after HFW release)
- Insomniac game with MP (pretty likely started after Rift Apart)
- Next GoW, set in a new mythology (started after GoWR)
Games that aren't clear if were greenlighted in the Jimbo+Hermen era (after April/September 2019) or before them:
- Spider-Man 2 (started after Spider-Man 1, we don't know exactly when but if just after SM1 release, which is super likely if weren't busy helping with Morales and Rift Apart, wouldn't be greenlighted by them)
- TLOU Online (branched out from TLOU2 to become a standalone game in 2019, not sure if before or after Jim and Hermen became CEO)
- Horizon CoM (Guerrilla and Firesprite have more than two teams working at the same time since who knows when)
- Unannounced projects by Firesprite+Fabrik, since they have multiple games under development at the same time but we don't know since when and don't even know the amount of games under development that they have
Not true. Bluepoint and Valkyrie were support teams on the recently released GoWR. Housemarque, Media Molecule, Team Asobi are making their own (non-GaaS) games. And see my second reply of this post, above this one.
I remember that around PSVR2 release someone made a list of the games announced for its first year, and compared it to the list of released games during the PSVR1 year. PSVR2 will have way more games during its first year.
Yes, like every single other console or accesory in gaming history. As of now, the data we have says it had a more successful launch window than PSVR1, matching Sony's expectations (to perform better than PSVR1, they were already happy with how PSVR1 performed). PSVR2 also had a bigger 1st year lineup than PSVR1. So won't die soon even if you desire it.
