I find it more off putting when people are anal about grammar. The second I see a period at the end of a sentence (not followed by another sentence) my guard immediately goes up.

in a text message that is

I put periods at the ends of all my texts. It actually does bother people. I had one woman freak out that I was too serious because I would use periods and not exclamations.
