What if you could fit your whole life — all your music, all your photos, all your movies, all your email — in a computer as fun and useful as an iPod? Now you can. Introducing the futuristic iMac G5 in 17- and 20-inch widescreen models. The entire computer, including a G5-based logic board, slot-loading optical drive, hard disk, speakers, and even the power supply — dwells inside the enchanting display. Modern living starts at $1299.

When can I buy it?!

Oh and yes, the entire computer is in that display.

Logic Board is just some sorta fancy name for Mac motherboards, as far as I can work out. It's no new feature; all (well at least all in the last 5 years) Macs have 'em.

Bout time someone got rid of the tower and integrated the components into the monitor. Well done Apple. How about a link to this story? And what about the keyboard, is that integrated into the display too? Where's the mouse? Does it have a touch screen? What are the specs?

OMG! Apple made a really big laptop without teh keyboard! Apple is teh amazing! How Apple make it fit everything in such small space! No one ever do that before!!

Yes because NOBODY HAS EVER THOUGHT OF THAT BEFORE!!!!

it looks fucking stylish and I'm sure is powerful as hell, but "innovative"?

Here in Japan, my high school COMPUTER LAB is packed with in-monitor all-in-one PCs. That should tell you something about the level of state-of-the-art innovation Apple is displaying here.

Well, you could take into consideration the fact that Apple were doing the "integrate into monitor" LONG before anybody else :p

Apple's innovation in this area was real enough, however you'd have to go back to 1984 & earlier :p

Haha ... touche. That said, the modern "all-in-one" computer unit is pretty goddamn run-of-the-mill here in Japan, where the people literally don't have space to put a tower in their apartment. If you look at tsukumo.co.jp's monitor section, they have like 170 LCDs and 3 CRTs. Soooo ... while the original Macintosh deserves credit, color me unimpressed by this latest "innovation." (but color me drooling over the specs and style)

I'm not bashing Apple, honest - I just don't want them to get credited for "innovations" that are already commonplace.

Well, I was tempted to post an Osbourne pic, but remembered that with the osbourne, like the 2 machines you've pictured the keyboard was fully attached to the screen also, making them not entirely similar. :p

I chose the Mac, (Could have gone for the Lisa to BTW :p) because of the seperated monitor / keyboard combo :D

anyways, xabre, thanks for the cookies, they were delicious!

That's ok. I was going to lace the green Christmas tree with cyanide but thought you'd probably prefer the non-cyanide version. I thought that gesture was quite thoughtful.

A 1.8 Ghz G5 and a 20-inch screen for $1,899 is the right price. That has a good chance of being my next computer purchase.

The chances of me dropping almost 2000 bucks on a new computer are pretty fucking slim. WTF, that's insane.. That's like prices from 10 years ago.

1.6 GHz? Teh slowwwww... o_O

You realize your 1.8 Ghz G5 iMac runs on a 600Mhz FSB and those laptops (which I do believe is slightly more portable) have A64's running at 1600Mhz FSB. Which means G5 iMac would be owned badly. ;)

BTW, those are 2.2Ghz A64s, which means even before the FSB, the iMacs are owned. :p

So it turns out that the Macs run on OS X 10.3, so those laptops get owned. :p

Everyone knows that THIS is why you get a mac.

It's going to be cool when I have the kind of disposable income to afford this kind of stuff.

Mostly so I can spend that $2000 on some really good home theater system instead, though.

Uh oh.... Mac fans backed into teh OSX IS TEH MAGICALLY BETTER emergency panic button yet again! Didn't even need a second page. My job is done here. :)

Of course, if I like Mac OS X and hate Windows XP, I am probably a blind Mac fan that doesn't know what real computers are like...

VIVA EL WINDOWS XP!

I've never even owned a Mac, but I have considered and compared. It doesn't take a fanboy to realize Windows is crap compared to OS X.

Screw that. VIVA WINDOWS 2000!!! I like my OS to not crash, but also to buttoutsky of my way. XP and OSX are too intrusive for my taste.

But then again, most Mac folks just use the OS and the web and not much else, so I can see why they are all excited about an OS that plays like a game. ;)

Anti-Mac zealots are like hardcore "atheists"--not real legitimate atheists, but the ones who claim not to have any religious beliefs, and will then try to convert you to atheism if you so much as stub your toe and yell, "Jesus Christ."

Last week I was on the phone with my sister, and she told me about how she went into a CompUSA to buy a book on OS X: "So I pick the book up off the shelf and some total stranger runs up to me out of nowhere, and without even introducing himself, he starts going on and on about how PCs have better performance and this and that. And, seriously, he was actually angry. And I was looking at him and thinking, 'Are you nuts?' He went on like this for five minutes. Then when I tried to get away from him, he said, 'Go ahead and believe Apple's lies, if you want to!' He was almost screaming."

Trust me, we're all so VERY impressed by your elitism. You are obviously the alpha male of forum geeks.

Dude, that story is the story of my life, but the other way around because I hang out with graphic designers and illustrators. "You use a PC? WHY?!?" LOL

The Power Mac G5's shown here may not be the exact same thing the original post is refering to, but here's a neat article about how they are using them to remove dirt and scratches from old films.

http://www.apple.com/pro/film/lowry/

“To do the work we are doing today 10 years ago, would have cost tens of millions of dollars for a computer facility,” says Lowry. “The economics of it, without question, would have been impossible. But along came the Power Mac G4 and the Power Mac G5, and suddenly we had an answer.”
Jim Ward makes the point that Lowry’s economic model, as much as his algorithms, brought him to Lowry. “His software does 95% of the work,” says Ward. “There’s a huge economic difference between letting 100 Power Mac G5s render all night long versus having 8 or 10 guys sitting at workstations for a much longer period of time eyeballing pieces of dirt.”
Lowry plans to acquire another 100 Power Mac G5s, and he’s clear about why. “Obviously speed. Both the Power Mac G4 and Power Mac G5 have outstanding 32-bit floating point processors, and we make very good use of them. Another major factor is RAM capacity, important in image processing. The new Power Mac G5s are running with 3.5 gigabytes of RAM in each computer.”

It's not innovative, but I'd be lying if I didn't say it looked hot. Frankly, I was expecting a little more, Apple. (This coming from a Mac user)

A Mac fanboy calling a PC guy elitist? X_X

Actually, I am better than you, so I guess that's OK. ;)

Yes, all my facts were fucking LOONEY!! Sour grapes instead of apples for you buddy.

Well as a Mac fan (but not a fucking mindless zombie like 99% of all loud mouthed Mac users out there) I will freely admit it is a slight disappointment, but not on the grand scale that I was predicting.

I mean really, what else could they have done? Sticking to a consistent look (it resembles the new Cinema Displays of course) is smart and the whole idea of going to a purely touch screen tablet set up is unrealistic. Imagine how much they would have cost? This is Apple we're talking about folks.

Plus OS X (which I fucking hate btw) is not handled for such a massive shift it usability.

I'd imagine any upgrades would be the most minimal. Ram upgrades and hard drive upgrades, maybe. That's about it.

One bad thing about this new iMac is that the standard model ships with 256MB RAM. That is not enough--I'll have to get it through a third-party vendor that'll throw in free memory (which is usually what MacZone does). Apple has a few customization options if you order straight from them, but it's basically memory, HD, Airport, and Bluetooth.

On the other hand, Apple is claiming that even the low end of the line can run Doom 3(which I find a little hard to believe). But if true, maybe you won't actually need to upgrade it.

I just priced it via the educational store and before taxes and other fees it's about $2,200 with 1 Gig of ram (2 sticks), Bluetooth Keyboard and Mouse, Bluetooth Module, and an Airport Extreme card added.

Doom 3 on 256MB of RAM? I suppose. XBox only has 64MB of RAM and it runs something resembling Doom 3.

That the 17" or 20" model?

God, I wish I were rich.
