Which horror game did you pick up in October? Alien Isolation or The Evil Within?

It really dissapoints me when I speak to people at work and I say "Have you played Alien?"

"Nah, I saw that IGN gave it a bad review"

...fucking fantastic.

I got Alien for free including DLC from AMD.

I might get TEW later on.

Evil Within is a Shinji Mikami game. So... that one.

Alien Isolation looks like just another Alien game made by some team. I LOVE the original Alien film though, so I think I'll check it out someday when it's like $7.50.

Haha, I can't even believe this is a real question. It should have been "Did you also decide to pick up Alien:Isolation along with The Evil Within?".

It really shocks me how many people listen to IGN

The IGN review isn't even the one that's the most sobering. The Gamespot video review is. As much shit as Gamespot gets, it's still not the most useless brother to IGN as many claim. Kevin, if nothing else at least comes off as entirely earnest and sincere. Go back and watch all of the reviews he did that you actually agree with.

I don't like Resident Evil 4 (ruined survival horror to me), so I'm sceptical of The Evil Within, since that's apparently a point of reference and I also don't love what I've seen in trailers. Looks kinda stupid. I'm gonna give it a go though. I love horror games and you don't get many big budget ones anymore. I am still working my way through Alien Isolation and I think it is excellent.

Alien Isolation cuz I got it for $10. Game is legit Amnesia-level terrifying.

Waiting to hear how the PC port of Evil Within turns out first before getting it, too.

As you can easily tell from my avatar Evil Within. Aliens looks kinda interesting but I'm afraid it will end up like Outlast.

Just The Evil Within for me. You guys have no idea how much I need it. NO IDEA!

Isolation. The 70's lo-fi take on science fiction is lifted straight from the first movie, and I got chills when the film's score started playing. I love how low-key everything is; the opposite of your bombastic space opera. I'm not far in; maybe the game's a P.O.S., but they've certainly nailed the atmosphere.

Makes me sad when I think about the recent movies - the AvP ones were nothing but an attempt to ride the teen-slasher-horror-flick gravy boat; a pathetic use of the Alien licence.

Evil Within on the other hand, from what I've seen: wooden voice acting; worrying delays while they optimise; poor pc port... I mean, I HOPE to hell it's good. If the gameplay is near enough identical to Resident Evil 4, it will still be worth picking up for dedicated fans.

However, the release date review embargo is a HUGE warning that they have no confidence in this product, and I will not preorder any more games under this policy.

The Evil Within isn't horror. It's Survival Action.

The moment you give yourself some form of significant defense in a survival horror title is the moment where your game takes the horror out. What's the point of being frightened when you have a gun.

In survival horror you're supposed to be defenseless. Anything and everything can kill you with ease. There is no /fighting back./

So, I'm buying Isolation. Because it's Survival Horror. And it's a /good/ Alien game. When was the last time we got one of those?

With all due respect you have no idea what you are talking about even if you do come up with a explanation of the wrong thing.

Shitty-wok letterbox and 30fps.

... Needless to say, I went for Alien. (Although I will be testing TEW somehow on my machine, and if it plays nice and runs well, I'll pick it up... If the reviews are good, mind.)

Is anybody watching the live stream on twitch of the guy playing The Evil Within? It doesn't look so hot, guys..

I don't know if it's against the rules to link to the video, i suspect the guy may have pirated it somehow.

I have never heard of "Survival Action" until now. I wonder if that's anything like taking a hot shower, except I'm using cold instead?

Game has leaked out on almost all consoles, so I don't think so. A few members on Gaf already have it on PS4.

Ah, i see. I'll still refrain just in case. The game so far reminds me a lot of RE5. Tons of action in the segments i've seen being played, not so much horror.

Edit: It's not exactly hard to find on twitch, anyways.

I'll be picking up the Nostromo edition of Alien: Isolation on monday, still undecided whether to buy The Evil Within or not, as Mikami's games of the last decade haven't really been to my taste.

What is this I don't even.

We've hardly heard any voice acting from the game, and from what we've heard it sounds completely find to me. Ruvic in particular sounds great. Maybe your getting wooden dialogue mixed up with wooden voice acting? And delays? It was delayed just once for a few months to polish it up - which they have. For example, the game once had 40 second load times and now it's down to 12 seconds. Not sure why you would be worried because of one delay. As for the bad PC port, let me guess - because it runs at 30 FPS? Please, we don't know enough about the port yet to say if it's poor. And lastly, the review embargo applies for all games published by Bethesda. It means nothing. Besides, the impressions from people that have the game early have all been really positive.

I was on the fence about both until I saw the performance of Alien Isolation and some good praise from GAFfers so being a fan of the first film picked it up. Plodding along but will probably put in a shift and finish it off this weekend.

Although I have loved every Mikami game in the past (yes even PN.03) I'm still on the fence about The Evil Within and really want to see how it performs on PC before committing to it. One thing is for sure there won't be a shortage of impression here on GAF.

It will be a terribly bad PC port if it requires a 4gb card to run 30fps at 1080p.
(which is why I bought a PS4 early in case my "weak" GTX 780 can't handle the truth)

Both but more excited for the Evil Within. I've just played a little bit of Alien but I sometimes get that Outlast vibe. I liked that game but the repetitiveness hasn't compelled me to finish it yet.

Evil Within, because:

A. Shinji Mikami

B. Nothing I've seen of Alien Isolation looks even remotely interesting

Heh, I feel the same way about Evil Within

I'm going to get both, but nothing about Evil Within has looked particularly impressive to me. Alien was a slight disappointment due to cultural saturation more than anything. Still I wish Tuesday would hurry up so I can play Evil Within and see what it is really like.

You say this as if you introduced the term to games and not someone else in 1996.

I feel like Alien is the only genuine horror of the two. Evil Within falls in the category of Dead Space horror games, in the sense that the majority of the fear is of jump-scares, and having the ability to actually fight your enemies removes a large amount of fear. Nothing wrong with this of course.

Alien by a long shot. It's got the most advanced lighting I've ever seen in a game and it's pretty much got almost all the weapons of TEW (except the knife and crossbow). Alien is in space, seems like it has a better story, better presentation, and runs much much smoother (on PC).

I may pick up TEW if the reviews match Alien.

Sadly no, most of the lighting is all prebaked, which I guess is part of the reason it runs so well.

Alien: Isolation. I don't really care for TEW tbh, it looks quite gore-first and personally (just my opinion) I don't think that's good horror.

Well actually I guess it is, I just prefer thrillers. So Alien it was.

Gamefly just shipped my copy of Evil Within PS4.

Will eventually pick both of them up on a steam sale since I'm short on cash now.

The Evil Within (PS4) this Monday (or Tuesday launch day at the latest :lol). Shinji Mikami, enough said.

I've no interest in Amnesia,Outlast type of games so probably never for Alien: Isolation.
