Which horror game did you pick up in October? Alien Isolation or The Evil Within?

Evil within is already on its way to me. But ill be getting both. I'm a huge alien nerd, however I wanted to play evil within first and I can only afford so many games right now. I'll get alien next.

I'm gonna download Alien isolation tonight, been busy with LOTR; Shadow of more or and driveclub...

Certainly won't have them all completed (finished LOTR last night) but will also purchase The Evil within at some point next week.

The Alien Within for me.

For me as well. Both games represent different styles of horror, so it should be fun jumping from Alien to Within -- Back to back like bros. I'm not expecting headache-free experience from TEW, though, due to possible issues with my AMD cards and the locked framerate.

Sadly no, most of the lighting is all prebaked, which I guess is part of the reason it runs so well.

Most lighting in all games are pre-baked. There are several instances of volume lighting (which hasn't been done in a game currently I believe). The shaders look spectacular too.. not too many games can even rival it's materials. The guy you first meet has an incredible skin shader rivaling the cutscenes.

EDIT: Digital Foundary disagrees with your assumption:

Look at the comments on screenshot 4/5.

Lighting is completely dynamic in Alien: Isolation, casting shadows across characters and the environment equally on both consoles. The way locations are illuminated is used to dramatically alter the atmosphere throughout the game.

In contrast, TEW doesn't look anywhere near as good.

Finally it probably runs really well on PCs because it's a closed world where you can throw all kinds of features into the current frame (as opposed to wide open spaces where a lot of overdraw will soak up framerate). In any case, even with this.. the next-gen consoles couldn't run it at 60fps and was missing features like tessellation too.

I'm probably wrong here, but isn't Evil Within an ID Tech 5 game that manages to run at 30fps instead of 60fps and still manages to have awful wide screen bars?

I'm sure I remember reading about the frameratr and being shocked as I thought the engine had to run at 60fps. Also, wide screen bars in games needs to stop being a thing, but I've seen different aspect ratios in different screenshots.

I love survival horror so I'm just happy that it's seeing a kind of resurgence lately (I think we owe Amnesia a lot). I'm knee-deep in Alien right now and loving it and I'm gonna be all over The Evil Within, they're both gonna be top 5 goty contenders for sure.

Alien Isolation looks like just another Alien game made by some team. I LOVE the original Alien film though, so I think I'll check it out someday when it's like $7.50.

?
It looks like anything but just another Alien game.
It's so very different from every Alien game that has come before it, I really have a hard time understanding how anything you saw of Isolation made you come to the conclusion it "looks like just another Alien game".

Ain't it grand. Two big budget horror games releasing in October. It's like a dream for horror fans, and Alien is a fantastic experience so far.

Both, absolutely -- If I had to choose, I think I know what I'd take, but I don't want to say it because I'm such an Alien fan.

The Evil Within isn't horror. It's Survival Action.

The moment you give yourself some form of significant defense in a survival horror title is the moment where your game takes the horror out. What's the point of being frightened when you have a gun.

In survival horror you're supposed to be defenseless. Anything and everything can kill you with ease. There is no /fighting back./

So, I'm buying Isolation. Because it's Survival Horror. And it's a /good/ Alien game. When was the last time we got one of those?

Survival horror = Resident Evil, Silent Hill, The Evil Within.
Horror = Outlast, Amnesia, etc...

If The Evil Within turns out to be a great game then I'll get it. With the amount of games I want to buy later on, I can't really afford Alien.

Both. Although i'm done with Alien, I just won't be finishing it. The trial and error nature of the game is nothing short of infuriating. I understand why it's designed like that and I can understand why people like it, but i've always hated trial and error stealth.

But i'm definitely looking forward to TEW since it's looking more like it leans closer to classic survival horror instead of the more action oriented recent take on it.

When are the fucking reviews coming? Evil Within is releasing in like 2 days and I still have no idea if it's any good or not.

Both for me. Been playing Alien for a couple of days and I am loving it. The sound design and the whole ambience is truly amazing.
Looking forward to The Evil Within on tuesday.

The Evil Within, even though I'm a big fan of the first two Alien movies. Third-person horror is a lot more interesting and effective to me than first-person horror, which has a tendency to be more formulaic, with its lack of combat and trial & error nature. It doesn't help that there is an influx of games like Outlast and Alien: Isolation being released and coming out right now. I feel like I'm being bombarded by all these games that look incredibly similar, and it's mostly down to them being restricted by a first-person perspective. The Evil Within is a breath of fresh air in this current climate and I appreciate its ambition and attempts to stand out from the norm.

I just hope it's good. Fingers crossed.

Both, as they both deviate from most AAA games and that in itself deserves praise, though they seem to be great games in their own right.

Bayonetta will be the best October game for me by far though.

Both. Let's see: single player focused, tightly designed linear horror experiences by two studios/designers with great track records.

What's not to like?

I got Alien Isolation [which I am loving] and I won't get Evil Within for quite some time. I will most probably play it on PC sometimes next year.

I was going to rent Alien Isolation, but it's much longer than expected and is starting to sound like it's not going to be my type of game.

There's no way I'm missing The Evil Within, though.
