Which series is more cheesy: MGS or Resident Evil?

Christ. The people bitching about MGS are more pretentious than Kojima.

Of all the examples of silliness from MGS you pick that awesome scene? What is silly about witnessing a man blinded and obsessed by power flipping out?

I guess we see things differently. Also, the game may want to appear Western, but it is Japanese to the bone. many Western gamers get a lot of things fly over their heads due to cultural ignorance.

Overall it´s Resident Evil...but MGS ain´t far behind, yet it´s way more entertaining.

Except for MGS4, it is downright bad. When i saw this shit i quit the game for a while.

Resident Evil by a country mile. There really is no comparison. :lol

Agreed about what you said regarding MGS2 and MGS4, but MGS1 is very cheesy. MGS3 is too, but most of its cheese is meant as a tribute to certain movies and unlike in MGS4 it doesn't get in the way of the most important parts of the storyline, so I don't think it's fair to call the whole game cheesy based on that.

Let me guess, while we aren't familiar with Japanese culture, you're an expert, right?

MGS2 and 'best story' are two things that should never be together.

Unless the sentence was like 'MGS2 does not have the best story'.

MGS ftw and i should know. Anyways MGS really comes of cheesy cause its a game imo, if it was a movie with some actor like Christian Bale most of gaf would be jizzin in their pants.

What should "best story" go together with, then? MGS4? *rolls eyes*

I say MGS for the embarrisingly bad melodrama, especially MGS4. At least when RE is cheesy, you don't want to look over your shoulder to make sure that nobody is watching you play.

Yep. MGS for the woefully bad melodrama means it gets my vote. All i can think of is the Otacon/Emma scenes in MGS2 and how they had me laughing my ass off:

"E.E... E.E!!!!!!!" and the stepmom bit... :lol :lol :lol This was NOT intentional cheese, which just makes it even more embarrassing.

The MGS series has its awesome moments of intentional cheese and genuine humour, but i agree with others that it takes itself waaaaay too seriously at times.

Resident Evil has always been more cheesy than just about any game out there, thats what makes it fun. Its like a sci-fi channel movie, only in video game form.

I never said that. Either way you're wrong, it goes something like: MGS1>>MGS2>>>>>>MGS3>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>MGS4

Nothing in MGS touches "I hope this is not Chris' blood...", "This mansion is DANGEROUS!", "You were almost a Jill sandwich!", "Master of unlocking." "Can love bloom on the battlefield?" comes close, but it's a different kind of cheese. That's cringe cheese, and this is roll-your-eyes and laugh cheese. Distinct cheeses.

You should read the MGS novel. It's a blast:

"Merry Christmas," Snake said as he delivered two power-house punches, left and then right, into the guards' faces. The soldiers plopped to the floor. "I forgot to tell you - Christmas is early this year."

Anyway, I always thought MGS was worse since it took itself seriously but RE5 is the cheesiest game.

Can't really say, I guess RE because there isn't really any redeeming qualities to its cheesiness other than it doesn't really get in the way. MGS cheesy is sometimes pretty funny, but its problem is that it gets in the way all the time.

The thing about MGS, is that I'm really into the cutscenes when they are a shorter length, like the first half of MGS2. From the Tanker chapter to around the part when you meet Otacon's sister in Big Shell, the game feels like a fucking awesome action movie. The cheesy villains work because the atmosphere vibes with it, but after the cutscenes get longer and we get into the deeper lows of Kojima's convoluted wankery, that's when it gets annoying.

That's why I really enjoyed MGS3's story, it felt like a great Bond-inspired actioner the whole time through, and did away with all the philosophical bullshit that hindered MGS2/4.

MGS easily. Especially since MGS3.

Don't understand why some are bitchin' around about RE. Except the first with it's halariously bad dialog, Zero with the riddiculus story and RE5 with.... well... bad... everything, the series haven't been that cheesy imo.

Even RE4. I mean, it had basically cheesy stuff in it, but it kind of really fitted because Leon was so badass. I laugh every time when I here the first dialog:

I know you boys didn't tag along so we could sing "Kumbaya" together at a Boy Scout bonfire. Then again, maybe you did.

:lol :lol :lol

Classic!

The difference is Metal Gear knows it's cheesy, it's intentional (like it or not) esp. 2 and 4. While RE series is actually trying not to be, but is, example:.....I HAVE THIS!

I think the Metal Gear's story strength comes from character devlopment and interaction......the story is supposed to be chessy.

MGS is definitely cheesier because it takes itself more seriously than RE does. Also because Kojima is a hack storyteller, yet he loads his games down with about twice the story of your average RE game, so just by volume alone you get more cheese.

I'd say MGS since it's much more pretentious and takes itself wayyy more seriously than Resident Evil does nowadays. There were several instances in RE5 where the developers deliberatly mocked the franchise and it's b-plot. it doesn't seem to take itself too seriously anymore, which makes it less cheesy.

in RE4 when salazar started quoting dostoevsky and gave that ten minute speech about the nature of man, i thought it was a bit much. the animatronic stone robot he sent chasing after you as a metaphor for sexual repression and breaking free from society's shackles was brilliant though

Both series are cheesy, that's for sure. But as it's been said, MGS is more pretentious : I said that being myself a huge MGS fan. So I would say MGS.

Look at RE1 and MGS both on PS1, clearly RE series has been the cheesiest series by a long shot since the beginning.

Well at least the voice acting has gotten much better. On a technical stand point I think the facial animations in RE5 looks pretty damn impressive!

I really have not had a problem with the story so far and I'm half way through. I mean, I don't know what people were expecting. This is resident evil after all.

They're both pretty cheesy so I have to give it to Resident Evil because it doesn't take itself seriously but MGS kind of tries too but still ends up being very cheesy.

People who answered MGS in this thread hate MGS too much for their own good.

Any normal headed gamer would say that RE is like infinitely cheesier than MGS. Not saying that MGS doesn't have it's cheesy moments as well (it doesn't really take itself as seriously as a lot of the people here are implying) but RE is like the current master of cheese in gaming.

Can we throw Devil May Cry into this mix? Because I think that would win. Otherwise, MGS.
It's a tough call between DMC and RE honestly... DMC doesn't seem so absurdly cheesy once you realize what the game is all about. With RE you kind of expect some sort of decent plot/story because of it's situation in sort of real world places but it never delivers that. It's like the deal with Godhand, once you realize that it's a parody you just learn to enjoy it and not take it seriously. Though at times DMC feels like it's a parody of action games in general when in fact it tries to take itself seriously sometimes and fails (DMC4 comes to mind with the parts where you are playing Dante, I could've sworn Dante was mocking the game the entire time!)

I never played a MGS until MGS4 and I thought the story was extremely extremely boring. So much useless jargon. Half the dialog is made up jargon. Maybe if I had played the others it would have been better. But I hated the story.

On the other hand, anyone can get into the RE story. An evil pharmaceutical corporation makes bad stuff that turns people into zombies, ganados or whatever you want to call them. The bad guys have this goofy over the top personality which is perfect for a video game. I enjoyed the story.

You forgot the part about those viruses giving people special abilities that turn them into Neo from the Matrix, or that allow you to cast fire from your hands.
