Dude, I've owned every single piece of hardware since the TG-16 save the Atari Jaguar and the Neo-Geo. Pride has never, EVER stopped me from buying hardware -- hell, I even own a DS.

It's also funny how some people will buy (or claim to buy) a console because they think it gives weight to their opinion of "it sucks".

Inevitable in this thread.

Well I don't know how much belief I would put behind people buying a console just to be able to come on to a forum and bash it, but the few that do that I would feel sorry for. Really that whole debate would be too hard to prove, worry about or waste time on.

Xbox... so far.

Too many games on it that are "exclusive" that i wanted also came out (are coming out) on PC/Mac.
Offering graphically superior console ports wasn't enough to make a $150+ priced console worth it when it just had little exclusive content (that i liked).

I own three Xbox games though, and I'm just waiting until it goes down to 99.99 to buy it. It's not worth (to me) paying over a hundred bucks for a console that has less than a year before it "dies."

I can't say anything about the GC version, but Fire Emblem is the best strategy rpg I have ever played (yes better than FFT on PSX).

Still, the GC version is still an unknown at this point. I am worried that they will add too many graphics and effects and it will slow down the gameplay and make it less fun.

You can still turn off animations in Fire Emblem. Animations as they are (not as great as the 2D ones... a little clumsy) are the same length as the GBA games.

If anyone needs a little push take a look at my review of the import.

This is the best Fire Emblem since the SUPER FUCKING FAMICOM.

Though the US version doesn't have Maniac mode. My one disappointment. :|

Oh I just remembered I don't have a PSP yet. Waiting for money to come into my hands.

Cogent, anyone who blames Sony for the death of the Saturn/Dreamcast. Anyone who thinks that the videogaming world begins and ends with Nintendo or Sega (or, in some very rare and extreme cases, Microsoft). Anyone who views the marketplace as a battleground and takes explicit sides to the detriment of his or her overall gaming experience this generation.

There's plenty of good reasons to NOT own a PS2. Money is one; the same for a string of bad experiences with hardware reliability. Hating Sony because it kicked the ass of your precious Sega/Nintendo, however, is so very, very NOT a valid reason.

Does anyone remember the video of an online game website editor/contributor (?) that was playing a PS2 and then ripped it off his desk and threw it out the window and then a Jeep proceeded to run over it repeatedly? I believe it was a Dreamcast gamesite or maybe it was IGN or something I can't remember for the life of me. It came out about when the PS2 released. It was funny (because it was stoopid).

all of them...because it became very apparent that i was invicible in soul calibur2 so there was no need of even purchasing the game*just let my brother get it*. All the fighting games i wanted were on dreamcast...and free if you knew where to look. My friend already had mario party/kart. And...well what can i say i think FF sucks now what the hell happened i went from having a team of bad ass people like sabin in a wife beater, and that ninja guy with the killer dog...to a pop rock video and lolitas all over the place. Not only that but they were winning these fights...pansys like these obviously need to be beat down. Leeching off my younger brother who already had all three systems, combined with weekends playing party games on the cube, and heated fighting game sessions on the Cast held me over. And then theres battle.net :D :D :D :D :D

None but the only time I played my PS2 since I got it last Christmas was when I picked up Katamari but for some reason I continue to buy games for it. I think its been even longer since I touched my GC lol

Yes, this is the saddest thing I've learned about GAF posters. Fanboys call themselves hardcore, but if you were really hardcore you would be playing on all consoles. Their is hot shit on every system that CANNOT BE MISSED.

Well, the "hardcore gamers" I know tended to prefer PC Engine, Saturn or NeoGeo to the mainstream shovelware on Famicoms or PlayStations. :P
Oh, eat a cock. Like those consoles didn't have any shovelware on them. Ever play "Keith Courage in Alpha Zones?" How about "China Warrior?" :P

Xbox.

PS2 and GameCube got tons of use. They both have many great exclusives. Xbox had very little.

And morons like Drinky who go "SADDEST SYSTEM EVAR" about GameCube are way overexaggerating and you know it. I get there's some (strange) GameCube hate, but holy shit people.

I bought a Gamecube Nintendo TWICE, mon ami. I think that qualifies me to at LEAST have an opinion on it.

You can have an opinion without buying one. I'd say buying two when you're such a hater qualifies you for the dunce cap.

I have an Xbox for the great online features and superior 3rd party ports, a PS2 for the exclusive action games/rpgs and a Gamecube for the Nintendo games. I hate threads like this, its just an excuse to bash your least favorite company. They all do different things really well.

I think you were responding to my post. Actually, I do want to make it clear that the reason I quit after the Saturn and Dreamcast's deaths was not really in response to anything Sony or anybody else did(for the record, Sony didn't kill Sega. Sega killed Sega). At the time (1995-1999), the only games I was really playing were Sega and Capcom's arcade styled games, and the best outlet for those kind of games were Sega's systems. During that period, my interest in gaming dwindled, and I kept telling myself to just give up gaming as it wasn't as much fun as it was when I was younger. Plus, it was getting in the way of other, more important interests in my life. The main reason I never became a fan of Sony's or Microsoft's systems was because by the time the PSX came out, my interest in gaming had already begun to fizzle. If you think you've 'outgrown' something, its probably best to just let it go and to move on to something else.

However, I've found that giving up is difficult and I still love certain kinds of games(every now and then). These days, I'm more of a 'fan' of gaming than I am an actual gamer.

Well I don't have a PSP due to lack of money, and didn't really want a DS...until Disciples II was announced. I have all three console systems, though. I probably will skip Xbox 360 until it's much cheaper, as I want a PS3 more, and all these new systems are going to be fucking expensive :(

That's right Drinky, a port of our beloved Disciples II is in development for the DS! OOh yeah

Buy Polarium. Presentation sucks but the game is solid.

I didn't really 'skip' any systems this gen. I had great experiences on all consoles. Aside from the lack of GTA and Halo GameCube is where gaming was at for me this gen. Next gen I think I'm springing for an early adoption of the Xbox 360.

I even had a run at GBA when the Classic NES edition came out, but I've since rid of it because I wasn't using it much. PSP is quite nice though. Haven't played any other portables at this point.

Xbox. The only games that interest me are Sega games and Psychonauts, even though I already have the PS2 version. I played Halo (multiplayer) and found it boring.

The Xbox for me.

I've played a few games on it, including emulators and I thought it was fun. But I've never had any overwhelming desire of having it from any game. The PS2/GC combo has my gaming needs more than covered.

speaking of the Xbox...for all the "Xbos for for the first few years was a Halo-box" bullshit you hear get spouted...how many of those people missed the other GOTL (game of the launch) PGR?

Good thing you hated FPS games and western RPGs

Well, that was kinda my point. I like to play an ocassional FPS, but I don't really feel the need to play them, as I have other genres that interest me much more. As for Western RPGs, I've never played one. Hell, I've played like 5 japanese RPGs in my life.

Skipped Xbox, PS2 and DC I suppose, Picked up a DC Recently because it was cheap and will get a Xbox when the new one comes down and pushes the old one down in price.

PS2 I miseed Deliberatly, Nothing I cant play on the Xbox on it that I want.

Japanese RPGs suck anyway...you need to do yourself a favor and play some games from Bioware or Black Isle Studios (regarding BIS: ignore their console games and the PC game named Lionheart...they never happened)

Hell...play Nethack, Angband, DOOM-RL, or ADOM

Note: if running windows get the DOS version of ADOM. rawk

3D0 to freaking expensive, Jaguar no games worth buying, NeoGeo too expensive for the number of available good games.

previous gens now?

how about I name the systems I've actually owned:

atari 2600

commodore 64

sega master system
sega genesis
32X
Dreamcast

NES
N64
GCN

PSX
PS2

XB

286 / 486 / Pentium1-3 / AMD2600+

GB
GBP
GBC
GBA
GBA-SP
PSP
DS

and last but not least:

TI-85 (both assembler and homemade games)
TI-83 (same)

edit: I've been slowly getting around to buying the systems I missed out on...but won't list them since I missed their primes)

I've got them all, and played most in this order:

Xbox, GCN, PS2

I could live without the PS2. YEAH THAT'S RIGHT BITCHES

I play PC the most now though.

I said it when it first came out.

I have a PC....I don't need an X-Box. Still true to this day.

My gamecube has gotten the most attention this gen. I absolutely love it. Mario Party 4-6 and 3 friends for the win.

None of the consoles, but didn't get a GBA.

All the consoles had enough good games to warrant a purchase. Got my PS2, then GC, then Xbox last year. Enjoyed PS2 the most, then Xbox, GC had a few stellar titles but I hated some of the most known games (like Prime).

Not liking the Xbox comes down to personal taste.

I just perused the entire Xbox library to put things in perspective.

Of the games rated 80% or above, at least 25 are not on the PC, Xbox, Gamecube, PS2, Dreamcast, or other consoles.

Then I thought about the best Gamecube games, or at least the ones I've enjoyed, same criteria. (no order)

1) Pikmin 2
2) Animal Crossing
3) Zelda
4) Metroid Prime
5) Metroid Prime 2
6) Paper Mario 2
7) Pikmin
8) Mario Tennis
9) Mario Golf TT
10) Super Mario Sunshine
11) Tales of Symphonia
12) Baten Kaitos
13) Harvest Moon AWL
14) Super Smash Brothers Melee
15) F-Zero GX
16) Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles
17) Zelda FSA
18) Starfox Adventures
19) DK Jungle Beat
20) WaveRace BS
21) Mario Kart Double Dash
22) Eternal Darkness

So roughly the same number of good/great exclusives, with a few overrated titles in both libraries. Again, I'm eliminating every 80%+ Xbox game that is also on the PC or will be on the PC.

5 out of the 22 games feature Mario, so if I arbitrarily decide to forego all things Mario, that's some of the best Gamecube games knocked out. Likewise, saying "Well, I have a capable PC. These Xbox games, though not on other consoles, aren't worthwhile to me.", that's just as arbitrary.

It's all about different tastes. The Xbox may share many of its console exclusives with the PC, but that's because Microsoft likes money. Among those eliminated are Halo, Halo 2, Top Spin, Rallisport Challenge, Riddick, KOTOR and KOTOR 2, among others. That doesn't change the fact that this thread is primarily about consoles, and however you stack the deck against the Xbox, it has a worthwhile library.

Conversely, the bottom falls out of the Gamecube library if you're looking for great cross-platform titles. I can't even name a PC game that's been ported to the Cube except for some Tom Clancy titles, and we know how those all turned out for Nintendo's system.

My point is this.

If you like the Gamecube, great.
If you like the Xbox, fine.
If you like the PS2, you're certainly in great company.

But making generalizations based on your own preference for Japanese and/or Nintendo games has no justification.

There is ample evidence to support the idea that the Xbox has had plenty of games worth owning, from console exclusives to absolute exclusives.

And honestly, with the number of great multiplatform titles that look better on the Xbox, the better value (though not the best graphics always) has been to play PC games on the Xbox anyway.

Great graphics, great online, great controller, great system.

Buy an Xbox, and enjoy what you've been missing. :)

Xbox.

I'm a two console gamer and chose DC & PS2 early on. One mainstream console with JRPGs and one secondary. After DC died, I picked up GC for unique games not found on PS2. Mostly bought it for Pikmin actually.

Previous generations:

SNES + PCE
PS1 + Saturn

No thanks. The only Xbox games I was ever interested it were available on the PS2, GCN, PC, or some combination thereof. ;p

According to MY tastes, of course.

This thread has quite a few instances of "I can get all the good Xbox games on the PC."

That's what I'm responding to.

Speevy, don't bother. Let fanboys do what they want, for who cares what reason. Seriously, who cares. This is another let's get together and troll thread and no one gives a shit.

I never bought a dreamcast. Didn't really have the money during its lifespan, but its something I plan on rectifying someday.

I may give up on the psp also. Its just not my kind of gamer machine. Loading times and the sketchy screen just really turn me off. The multimedia aspects are kinda cool though.

I got fun out of all three consoles this generation, and I'm enjoying the two nintendo portables immensely. I was lucky enough to have some buddies to play cube with. Four swords, mario kart, red faction 2, conflict desert storm, fzero, donkey konga, soul calibur 2, super smash bros melee, among others got tons of playtime, some of the best gaming this gen.

Xbox, not so much. Halo is mediocre to me. What sold me on the system was pgr2, and forza was a lovely suprise. Basically its my racer + multiplatform console.

PS2 has tons of cool games, nuff said. I didn't buy it till this year though, couldn't justify the price to myself with the reliability issues. Got a used one in great condition for 70 bucks from a pal in january, and I already have more games than my other systems.

I got them all! Recently pickup a PSP. I wont be buying any new system until they drop in price.

Winner this generation for most console sales is PS2 without a doubt and having the biggest library.

Biggest loser GC, just because they have been doing this far too long to not know how to sell more consoles.

Best console this generation...A Modded XBOX! hands down better than any console this generation! Xbox Media Center just takes it to a level the other consoles cant touch. So for all you haters out there saying you didnt buy an XBOX because their library has alot of PC titles well it also has alot of NES,SNES,Genesis,N64,MAME,Atari,GBA etc..It also has some great exclusives like Ninja Gaiden,Forza etc etc. Along with the usual superior version of the multiplatform games.

So if you skipped buying one so far this generation, better pick one up before they are all gone and get it modded rigt away
