White male lead in the spec script Disney bought for the live action remake of Mulan

Who should play the lead character and true hero in Mulan's live action movie?

Going to call bullshit on this one.

1. Disney has been pretty damn good with their casting. BP, Star Wars, Moana, etc. I don't see them botching this at all.
2. I doubt any real resemble of the actual script got out when the film was announced a week ago.

Sitting there and saying it's true, is not a source.

Are you familiar with the Angry Asian Man blog and his connections within the industry?

Hahahaaha. Oh man, the white washing will always find a way, right ? So not only Mulan, which was a strong female lead, saving her father and her friends is moved out of the lead role... it is in favor of a totally new random character, which happens to be a white male lead. :")

White male lead better fucking die in the first second of this movie.

They're literally inviting all the backlash if they do this.

Part of the announcement was two new writers re-writing the spec script anyways. I'm sure Disney is aware what they should do here.

"This is the original spec script. They've since hired new writers. The version that makes it to screen could be different. #MakeMulanRight"

So, nothing to see here?

"The hope is that they scrapped that MULAN script. Just pointing out that this version EXISTS. It was somebody's good idea."

OK, I get almost on the complaints. There's no particular reason to frame the adaptation through a previously non-existent character that's extraneous to the plot. In context of a bunch of other adaptations it feels like minimizing roles to push the white savior complex.

But complaining that it's not an Asian-American in the role sounds like some weird self-centered bullshit. You can't argue that films are about money and that's why it shouldn't have a white guy, then make a moral argument against it anyway because they're only chasing money.
The author seems like he'd be happier with a Korean-American actress playing Mulan than a Chinese actress. Which is, being polite, bizarre.

I just assumed they did 1:1 scripts from animation to live action. Hmm.
Original Mulan was badass. They better fucking sing during the training sequence again.

I can't believe people actually believe this,
Its like every joke people made when it was announced.

And people will point to the Matt Damon movie or Marco Polo however those at least have some reasoning to them.
Disney would be slaughtered for not only whitewashing but undoing the entire point of Mulan.

A bit strange to make a #makemulanright hashtag if Disney is apparently already aware of that and working on it

The only reason why he and his entourage decide to help the Chinese Imperial Army is because he sets eyes on Mulan. That's right. Our white savior has come to the aid of Ancient China due to a classic case of Yellow Fever.

holy fucking shit

Walt Disney Pictures has dated its live-action “Mulan” retelling for Nov. 2, 2018. In addition to dating the pic, “Jurassic World” and “Avatar” sequel scribes Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver have come on to rewrite script.

The two came on board in 2015 to rewrite the spec by Lauren Hynek and Elizabeth Martin.

The film has been fast-tracked into production with Jason Reed attached to produce along with Chris Bender and Jake Weiner.

A director has yet to be announced. A global casting search will soon be underway to find a Chinese actress for the role of Mulan.

The studio’s emphasis on live-action comes after the success of “Maleficent” and “Cinderella,” and next year’s “Beauty and the Beast” is already one of the most anticipated movies of 2017. The first “Beauty and the Beast” teaser trailer in May was viewed a record 91.8 million times in its first 24 hours, besting “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” The movie, starring Emma Watson, Luke Evans, and Dan Stevens, will be released on March 17.

The original 1998 film featured the voices of Ming-Na Wen, Eddie Murphy, Miguel Ferrer, and BD Wong in the English version, with Jackie Chan providing his voice for Chinese dubs of the movie. It grossed $304 million worldwide.

This is a spec script. AKA disney didn't solicit it. and has been re-writing it for a year

The point of the discussion is to get them to deviate from the spec script.

I mean what's the argument?

People can't relate to them minorities?

Does little Billy Peterson go "mother, I do not see a person with my skin color in here, how ever will I be able to enjoy it?"

Did the original Mulan have a secret white person I don't remember?
I think the argument tends to be that movies starring minorities tend to do less well in the box office, so studios default to a white lead because statistics. They dont really care why the numbers look that way. The obvious rebuttal to that is that if big budget movies only star white men, of course movies starring white men are going to do better at the box office than a low budget niche film starring anyone.

Of course it's gonna be a white guy. It always has to be. Asian men can't be in any even minimally remotely positive sexualized role, what are they crazy? Cast the Asian guy in the mentor or best friend role. Even better yet, the brother so he can be one of the heroes but you know... not the sexy hero.

[insert completely cliched and unoriginal small penis joke here]

Will drop pants for Sony.
Hollywood really hates Asians....my god.

Seems like it. I would think after how awesome Luke Cage was with an almost all Black cast and with Black Panther coming out a movie with an entire Asian cast should not be so hard to make in America.

It seems way too early to get angry about this. They likely just bought a spec script that hit some of the right story beats, and will end up heavily rewriting it.

This reminds me of the recent Bruce Lee biopic where they decided to tell the story from some white dude's point of view, resulting in Bruce Lee playing second fiddle in his own biopic...

Now what's the next step in your master plan?
Maybe we can go halfway on this and make the male lead a black guy. Best of both worlds? or something...
