White male lead in the spec script Disney bought for the live action remake of Mulan

Who should play the lead character and true hero in Mulan's live action movie?

When was the last time Disney even commissioned a story with that big of an age gap between the characters?

The man is a 30-something European trader who initially cares only for the pleasure of women and money. The only reason why he and his entourage decide to help the Chinese Imperial Army is because he sets eyes on Mulan. That's right. Our white savior has come to the aid of Ancient China due to a classic case of Yellow Fever.

Nothing out of this will make it to the final movie. It's just a spec script, it will go through many rewrites and many writers. I trust Disney will make it right.

When I saw the movie announcement thread on GAF I had a joke ready about casting a white person but I thought in my head that prospect was too ridiculous for a Mulan movie so I never posted it.....but here we fucking are.

Are you familiar with the Angry Asian Man blog and his connections within the industry?

I know of him, but not his connection.

And I will still say, regardless, there is no way in hell this was seriously considered when they just announced the film. At the very best, it's an idea thrown at a brain tank with a dozen other ideas that will never be made from years ago. It makes zero sense from both the appearance Disney wants to keep and from the business perspective. They aren't going to change that money making princess line up. Mulan is still going to be the star.

That's why I'm saying it's bullshit. Little boys don't care about buying a Matt Damon figure.

I mean, I could see this script being legit if it was written at least 5/6 years ago...
But in the last couple of years?

Damn.

I agree with what they've said, apart from where they go on about how it should be a Chinese-American actor, not a Chinese actor. Like.. what?

The script sounds fake as fuck anyway.

But the fact we don't know for certain and that the spec script is their starting point means there's still a possibility of a White European trader being in there. Outrage at that possibility now is better to make sure it's not just modified but completely written out of it.

Next thing you know they'll hire a black comedian to play the dragon.

This can't make it to the final product-it would be so incredibly dumb.

I don't understand why you would even buy a spec script for Mulan that brings in a white male lead with yellow fever, an incredibly creepy age gap in the romance, and gives the female title character's most empowering moments to the fucking white guy. What kernel of wisdom or snippet of plot could possibly redeem that decision?

Of fucking course it would become a "white man saves the delicate Asian flower from her destitute life" story. How dense is Disney if this is true?

I can't wait for Simba to be cast by Andrew Garfield in the Lion King remake.

Someone wanted to be fired :")

Hollywood really hates Asians....my god.

It's all about money. What's going to sell more tickets? Lesser Known but respected Asian actor who can't put butts in seats or Matt Damon?

It's simple business. I am curious, do you also get all up in arms when an american white chef opens up an asian bistro and it ends up being more successful and more authentic than the little dive down the street run by asians?

yeah, i don't get the "it's just a spec script" comments. the base is already poisoned.

If they actually do this and it fails, they would probably blame it on the Mulan not being white enough to match with Channing Tatum and setting being too 'foreign'.

Not sure why they don't use this to go full on for the Chinese market and just make a Chinese film with Chinese talent. The Mermaid's numbers are nothing to sniff at.

Spec script, guys. Come on.

Nobody knows what a spec script is, apparently, or they just accepted the original source's framing of the story without doing any critical thinking.

For anyone in doubt:

A) spec scripts are not commissioned by studios. They're written independently of any project and then sold.

B) Spec scripts, like any script, will go through many revisions before filming. Sometimes studios purchase them because there are only a few elements of the story they want, and then they are reworked into a completely different project.

There is now way they'll be this dumb.

Maybe they really liked the story structure of the spec script, but are having Jaffa/Silver rewrite it as Mulan as the lead.. and remove the random white guy hero. And honestly, I hope they take a good amount of influence from the animated version.

I hope.

Thanks for the clarification! I had no idea how that all worked out.

Get rid of all those pesky gender issues, and make it about a white man trying to make it in the world of ancient China. And his hot asian girlfriend can help him too, I guess.

Much more palatable.

Matt Damon defended the Great Wall in a Chinese funded movie + Marco Polo = Liam Hemsworth cast as lead in Mulan

LOL People know what a spec script is. You're automatically assuming the problematic part of the white male lead is going to get written out. The Angry Asian Man blog isn't, and is making sure it's public just in case Disney is tone deaf.
