Whitney Houston - THE Voice
Celine Dion - The Canadian Vocal Wonder
Mariah Carey - The Elusive Chanteuse, and Watcher of the 5th Octave
Pop Vocal Legends all. Supreme technical skill, millions upon millions of album sales, and unrivaled public esteem. All 3 responsible for some of the most iconic, memorable ballads in music history. The inspiration of would-be singers the world over. To put it simply: the buck stops with these glorious ladies. They are known affectionately among the Pop faithful as The Vocal Trinity.
And yet, there would be a challenger to join their ranks:
Beyonce Giselle Knowles Carter, The Usurper
On paper, the credentials are nearly there. She's been around for a minute, sold a decent amount of albums, has passable vocal talent when she sings live.
But she hasn't had a world caliber hit since Single Ladies. Her last album, the self-titled BEYONCE, came and unfortunately went after the shock of the album's sudden release faded. And while her catalog is vast, it isn't filled with the sheer number of timeless songs that the other women have. Beyonce has no answer to I Will Always Love You, My Heart Will Go On, or Hero. She doesn't have the sheer vocal will and power of Whitney, the effortless versatility and moxy of Mariah, or the sheer panache of Celine. Can she really claim place among them?
This is a hot topic in PopGAF lately. But I wanted to get GAF's general opinion.
What say you GAF? Does Beyonce deserve to be a Queen?
