You monster

I mean, if you go by the intersection of massive sales and public recognition as a talented vocalist, sure. But if you go by actual technical ability, Celine's a clear step below, so she doesn't deserve to be in the trinity. It's a duumvirate. Lara Fabian or Lisa Fischer can get an invite if we decide sales don't matter at all, though.

Beyonce has no impact outside the US. Celine/Withney and to a VERY lesser extent Mariah had that worldwide appeal beyonce lacks.

In terms of voice, where's old school Christina?

When I think good R&B vocalists I think Nina Simone. I don't think Beyonce is bad - she's just typical.

I find her typical and boring too. But sometimes I wonder if it is because everybody opts to emulate her, saturating the market for me.

This is interesting. I respect Nina Simone and she paved the way for a lot of black women.
But Beyoncé talent isn't typical. She extends her ranges in various songs and has a wealth of technique. Typical would be Ariana Grande on her best day. She does nothing with her talent but sing. If you are saying musically she is typical, then I can understand that. But vocally, she isn't exactly typical. She can do a lot more than the average mezzo - soprano. I get what your saying however...

I was gonna say, How are you guys paying Patti dust :(

It's not anything against Patti; it's just that the "vocal trinity" is a fan-made appellation for Mariah, Whitney, and Celine specifically. They're grouped together because they were super popular and active during an overlapping period (90s), and were considered to be gifted singers. This is why singers like Patti Labelle or Aretha or Gladys, or others, whose career peaks came earlier aren't part of that "generation" of singers.

Personally, I think Whitney's performance of All The Man That I Need was better than Patti's, but Patti is amazing.

I've always thought of Nina as more of a jazz / blues singer. Link to her R&B work?

I'd honestly put Amy Winehouse over Celine Dion. Maybe doesn't reach her range, but her voice is much more unique and memorable to me.

If sales didn't matter none of those three ladies should be up there :p

Celine never deserved to be part of that trinity, let's be honest.

Tea was spilled.

That said, Beyonce has her moments. I think she's just always ON, which prevents her from connecting to the audience emotionally, but she does have that capability to do so. She's usually performing an act or an idea of what she thinks it means to be expressive but like other aspects of her talents, she's constantly aware and constantly improving:

1+1 (Backstage)
Listen (Live)

Album wise, she's had her moments:

Speechless
Start Over
I Was Here
I Care

She's never really focused or is known for that aspect of her voice, but she's really changed a lot of that with Beyoncé.

Rocket
Superpower
Jealous
Heaven

I mean, Heaven is simple but it swells and you can hear the ache from her miscarriage all over it.

In one aspect, she's not there yet and I don't think she ever will be. Mariah and Whitney were vocal powerhouses and created an industry of copycats in their wake. On the other hand, Beyonce is very different in that she's the whole entertainer package.

I don't think it's fair to compare, honestly.

Why Koodo.. Why?

Idk, the fact that Beyoncé is always technically and vocally always being compared to supremes in the game means something. Like who else vocally can we compare her to? Adele? Rihanna? J. Lol? Katy Perry? Madonna?

She is apart of the vocal Trinity if her name is always being brought up tbh.

Queen Bey? nah breh. She's good. Not great. But greatness only comes around so often. She should be happy to be one of the better artists out there, and also super rich.

You for real? If you are going on longest time without a hit, she wins. Tons would argue for "Listen" from Dreamgirls, or "Halo" as answer to those other songs. And her self-titled album was a megahit. Yet to be outsold by a release since it came out and outsold all other releases of 2013 in just the last 3 weeks of the year.

Literally no other major pop star has released an album since Beyonce, tho. All the other ladies are gearing up for 2015.

BEYONCE has yet to outsell Rihanna's last album, actually.

That's all well and good, but can she sing chords?

I haven't seen her done it yet but it's not like she couldn't. If you listen to the entire video, you can clearly hear her doing all types of tricks with her voice almost on the same level as this girl. But remember, they are of two different vocal types. Beyonce doesn't sing like a alto (which I think this women is).

The fact that you even have to reach for the GOATs to find someone to compare Beyoncé to says it all tbh. She's transcended 'regular' pop stardom, and even if she isn't up there with Whitney (not a heaven joke btw) or Mariah she's still a cut above.

OP summed it up perfectly:

Beyonce has no answer to I Will Always Love You, My Heart Will Go On, or Hero. She doesn't have the sheer vocal will and power of Whitney, the effortless versatility and moxy of Mariah, or the sheer panache of Celine. Can she really claim place among them?

But as someone else said: other singers would KILL to be where Beyonce is. She may not be top tier legend, but that's not a slight against her and all that she has accomplished.

And: OH MY FUCKING GOD at that "Land/Sea" image

And what's with all of the Ariana Grande gifs?

Lol, are you out of touch or something?

Problem
Break Free
Bang Bang

and that's just from one album that's been out for less than a month

That's my point. Is she just the another new flavor of the month like Katie Perry and Lady Gaga?

Artist like Whitney Houston, Mariah, and even Beyonce delivered hits over a decade through several music industry style iterations and managed to stay relevant. Can you honestly say this Arianna person is anything close to that level yet?
