Who asked for 2.5D?

High res 2D is way too hard and expensive to produce. It's either go retro low-res or use 3d models instead (or have awful flash-style puppet animation like the new monkey island).

As soon as wiki showed up the point was lost.

For decades that's what 2.5D meant and was referred to, 2D style games with polygons. How many contemporary sources were calling Duke 3D 2.5D? Or even Doom? Wolfenstein? Blake Stone? Those 3D action games using sprites and no polygons? Any of those free roaming scaling environment games? few to none depending.

As I said subjective, because there are many definitions for 2.5D, none of them wrong. As another poster mentioned, games like Heimbdall, Diablo, Fairlight - even earlier examples are considered 2.5D. The definition has either changed or evolved to include many more things. Klonoa(s), Viewitiful Joe are probably more in-line with 2.5D since the early 2000's. All can be true for sure, even you can see that.

People causing confusion later isn't subjective. The OP also posted examples, again, illustrating what he was thinking of. So we already have an idea of what type of games he dislikes in that style.
