Who really gives a crap about retro 80s?

The 'bleep bloop' pop music was garbage
Rock music (hell even rap sometimes) was a homoerotic joke
Video games pre-NES and and early 80s arcade had crappy control and slow input-to-action response
Horrible fashion and design sense
America was at its most decadent and selfish and divisive (rich getting richer/poor getting poorer and angrier)

Other than unprecedented kickass afternoon cartoons and ultra violent and/or sexy movies (and the LA Lakers dynasty), the 80s was a decade left forgetting. The 70s (which had a retro comeback in the 90s) had better music and movies and more respectable fashion, and I had more respect for the people from that era recovering from the turbulent 60s.

So cut it out with the dumb 80s throwback pop music and retro design trends, as if the '00s aren't f'd up enough..

There aren't really fans of that garbage decade, are there?

The 80's mostly rocked because of the cartoons. There was some good music too. You should be shot in the testicles for what you've said XS+. Have a nice day. :)

That's true, the 70's did have a nice retro comeback in the 90's. It was the whole Dr. Dre, G-Funk, Grunge, Cypress Hill inspired weed resurgence back in the early to late 90's. Ah, good times... I think this particular retro aspect of that decade is best summed up in the movie Dazed and Confused, which is hailed as one of the best at recreating the feel of a bygone era.

And even i am moderately surprised
I think i'd refrine the rant and say

"**MAINSTREAM** 80s sucked more donkeys balls than anything... ever"

The 80's were easily the best decade to live in if you're a child. The music, TV, cartoons, movies, video games and so on were just awesome.

Preach it, brother! :D

Uteral class of '78 here. ;)

Meatpuppets, Husker Du, The Pixies and a shitload of other awesome bands would point to you being either full of shit, or grossly in need of checking out some different 80's music.

This is very true. I feel bad for the kids today. We had it awesome.

That such, much from the 80s was crap. Grade A, unadulterated garbage. BUT the 80s gave us Thriller and Purple Rain.

So it can't be THAT bad.

Our toys were made of die-cast metal, our saturday morning cartoons were bitchin', and pro wrestling was on syndicated TV at least once a week. Children weren't singing about how they want to die cause they're so misunderstood, they just felt that their parents didn't understand that just wanted to have fun.

Oh, and A-Team and Knight Rider...

The only thing I regret about the 80s is owning a day-glo windbreaker. God, what the hell were we thinking?

Apparently a lot of people give a crap about the 80s. That's why VH1 did I love the 80s, then I love the 80s strikes back and subsequently the I love the 70s and 90s series.

That throwing stick stunt of yours has boomeranged on us.
80's cartoons sucked... I don't get why it's considered a fact that they were somehow better than they are now. Not that I find current saturday morning cartoons at all good, but nothing in the 80's compares to the original programming coming from Cartoon Network since 1995.

80's was a great decade of football though.

Special Edition of the already released 3-Episode DVD available widely in about three weeks, rumors of the entire First Season arriving on DVD next Fall.

That's why I love the 80s.

Today's cartoons are wittier and smarter, but the 80s cartoons are still fun.

While I was alive during the 80s, I can't exactly remember much of it as I was never older than 5. So looking back at the 60s, 70s and 80s without having lived through them (and hopefulyl that means I'm unbiased)...the 80s was shit.

I'm sure there were good parts, but generally...bleh. And it's like the women were going out of their way to make themselves unattractive, with the hairstyles, clothes and make up...god it's awful! The prevalent styles from the 60s and 70s on the other hand are extremely attractive. A lot of this applies to early 90s as well, the later 90s is too recent to judge yet.

The 80's had better music and fashion, but the 70's would have been the preferable decade to live through -- what with the drugs and the sexual revolution and all that stuff.

Were the cartoons legitimately that good? As far as I can recall they were half-hour toy commercials (GI Joe, Transformers, Voltron) that had really shit-quality animation. Sure they were entertaining when we were kids but that's because we were stupid and wanted toys =) I can't really think of a single one that I would really want to watch today. It kind of boggles my mind that people are paying for DVDs of that stuff....

The early 90's cartoons soar above all that 80's nonsense -- what with Batman:TAS, Animaniacs, and the early NickToons...

You've gotta be kidding me. Control was tighter then than it has been in the last 9 years of 3D, and none of the classics had any controller lag. What games are you talking about, specifically?

The 80's was a fucking cheesefest. The music sucked ass. The fashion sucked ass. And in music the shitty ass fasion was more important than the actual music. I'm glad I was a little kid during the 80's. Would have fucking sucked going through your teens during that period. 60's, 70's, and the 90's had much better music, and everyone didn't look like retards.

I don't know much about the 70s since i was a baby then.

but the 1980s fucking ruled.

the early to mid 90s sucked ass and im glad they're gone. alternative rock/grunge music fucking killed music for me. 90s fashion also sucked dead whores.

80s forever.

Hey, early 90s music was the first stuff I ever listened to (born in '86) and I think it was awesome. Nirvana, Soundgarden, STP, Alice in Chains, and Pearl Jam all kickass. Red Hot Chili Peppers too.

But yea the 80s ruled. Metallica, Megadeth, Van Halen, and Guns N' Roses near the end = pure awesomeness. GI Joe, Transformers, and then all the awesome movie trilogies mentioned before. But every decade had it's good stuff.

Except for the 60s. Hippies suck.

Bah, and you can keep your leg warmers, shoulder pads, fucking jumpsuits and let's not even get started on the punk thing!

Let us all agree that 60s fashion rocks anyway.

Two words: Tachini (sp?) Suits

Remember those? They were those semi-sports, satin-looking jump suits that had the matching pants and jacket (w/zipper)? What were we thinking indeed...

Personally I wasn't a big fan, but I had one I think, as did everybody else. :p

You just finished playing the Mina-Age Arcade and am asking me this? Control, timing and collision were just as important as actual gameplay in early 80s video games, moreso than any other succeeding generation of gaming, that's for sure. The NES wave of gaming fixed a lot of those Atari/Coleco/etc. game control problems in my view. And I'm referring to 16-32-bit and 2D gaming as the proper remedy to early 80s gaming, not today's suckass 3D games of course.

And 80s fashion consisted of dumping a can of hairspray (or Jheri Curl) into your scalp and/or wearing some Polo shirt or Quicksilver/T&C BS. That's better fashion? 70s fashion was at the very least more imaginative than what the 80s had to offer.

The Shockwave games at Opa-Age arcade are hardly representative of the originals. Aside from the fact that mechanics have been altered, there is kind of a nasty response issue that I think is part due to the way keyboard input is taken and the fact that Shockwave always has kind of a weird lag. Like I was saying, what specific games have problems with control lag (in their original form)?

Maybe it's just that I am only emulating the classics, but I don't see it with stuff like Donkey Kong, Robotron, Star Wars, Pac-Man, Frogger, Missile Command, Gyruss, etc. All of them are just as fluid as any NES game.

Aracde controls were pretty good back in the day. And even back then you had creative thinking in terms of control with track balls, all kinds of wheels, and things like Battlezone. The consoles with major control issues were Intellivision and 5200 mainly because of some horrid controller design. The original Intellivision kinda suffered more in that it couldn't benefit from the third party controller market because the controllers were hardwired to the system board.
