Playstation 3 Uncovered!

PSM's information came from developers. Some on the record, some off.

....particularly when it comes to ease of development for the system: how it compares to PS2, and more importantly, Xbox 360. "The *****ing this round sounds opposite of the last. Both are friendly, but the PS3 may actually be friendlier," reports one of out PS2 and Xbox 360 development sources, who wished to remain anonymous. "People are finding that the [xbox] 360 has some stupid bottlenecks."

Developers will soon learn more about the ins-and-outs of creating PS3 games, as Sony has started taking orders for final development hardware to be delivered by December. At that time, game creators will be able to tell just how much mroe extra polish they can put on their titles without worrying about them crapping out on a retail PS3.

The latest on PS3's power
"Once we have final hardware for both next-gen systems, we'll have a much better idea of how they caompare, but the general consensus right now is that the PS3 is considerably more powerful than the X360 across the board," said another source. "It's important to get a good idea of which is the most powerful soon, since multi-platform games will need to be either ported down from PS3 to 360 or vice-versa."

Speaking of multi-platforming games, another of our next-gen contatcts chimed in with the following when we asked them, flat out, which system will ultimatelyl have the best looking games. "Only the games that are exclusive to tiether system will be real technical showcases,"adding "There will be strong points for each, but the cross platform games will most likely look and perform almost identically."

PS3's Promising Online Support

In addition to all of the cool Wi-Fi-based PSP to PS3 functionality we've previously reported Sony is working on (transferring media and save data between the two anywhere in the world at a hotspot), there's some actual news to report on the online gameplay front. not only that, it's pretty good. (Although the gradual diminishing of Sony's PS2 online plans over that console's life will always have us taking their goals in this department with a grain of salt.)

PS3 is slated to have an actual online community ready to back it up on day one, complete with friend tracking, message services, and a central hub for everything. If it sounds like xbox Live, it should. Sony has been folloowing M$'s moves, and, well, plans to copy most of them, according to our sources. "They [Sony CEA] have a whole division that was put in place after the Network Adaptor was released for PS2 that bascially dropped focus on PS2 and moved to planning the PS3," says one designer working on an online PS3 title. "They knew that early that they were not going to compete during the current gen."

Ramping up for an early release?
There's been a lot of talk about Sony's E3 2005 proclamation that PS3 would ship in the spring of 2006. A lot. Would it be in Japan only, or were they talking about the U.S. too? Questioned further on the topic, Sony execs have since stuck to their guns, saying that the system would be available worldwide before next summer.

PS3 will have a limited playable presence at TGS 2005. Sony has told PSm to expect a significant presence for the system at January's CES in Las Vegas. If a March launch does occur, it owuld be accompanied by only a couple of first-party titles, another two to three from EA, and one title at most from their other thrid parties. Madden NFL football developer Tiburon has had PS3 dev hardware longer than almost any other U.S. developer. Rockstar North has had stable kits since at least August 2005.

There's a lot of talk among the PS3 developer community about the importance of being first-to-market, or at least not letting M$ get too much of an installed base before PS3 ships. The general feeling is that Sony considers xbox 360 to be a possible contender in this generation, so they're not going to just rest on their laurels. In fact, developers report that Sony Japan is taking a much more hands-on role in the U.S. luanch of PS3 than it did with PS2 or PSP. Shades of the PS2 luanch, there.

GTA 4: Rebuilt from the Ground Up

The next GTA game is going to look really good. Actually, maybe that should be feel really good. It's a no-brainer that on the most powerful games console yet, one of our favorite series will have better graphics. But, base on developer Rockstar North's technical research, GTA4 will be more about immersion than just mere eye candy.

Rockstar North is creating a specialized game engine for PS3 that will bring GTA 4 to life to a degree that the PS2 games could only hint at. Speciafially, they're going to be using the high data transfer bandwidth of the Cell CPU, RSX GPU, and Blu-ray Disc to use several streams of game info simultaneously. The game's city- unfortunately yet to be even hinted at- will still be free roaming and seamless, but broken down into smaller, more deatailed areas at the engine level, into which the game designers are going to eb able to pour more textures, more oject variety, and tons of details (such as discareded soda cans with their own physics), just for starters. The goal is a city that's less repetitive and where everything - and everyone- looks and acts mroe like they would in the real world on every level.

MGS 4 Becomes a War Zone

One source has described the game to PSM as "a cross between Rambo and Black Hawk Down," with Solid Snake plunged into the middle of a high-intesntiy urban war zone where artillery is taking out cover all aroudn him and AI controlled "sidekicks" fight alongside him as if they were actual human-controlled characters. The new 3D camera will paly a big role in surviving the fight quarters and constantly changing cover.
Kojima has an update on teh game planned for TGS.

The bolded statements is what I'm most excited about. Rockstar using Blu-ray for their first next gen game. WOW!! If true then wouldn't that put the x360 option out of the door. If not a port would be nothing but a decline of what the PS3 would have.

And the part where one dev says that the PS3 is easier to program for is big. I wonder how true that is though. What do you guys think about ALL this big news?

The only problem I see with the PS3 is the wait. The probable $500 price doesn't sound bad at all considering how damm powerful this system is going to be.

I still say there isn't a God damn chance of PS3 hitting even Japan in March, let alone world wide, especially if we barely see anything at TGS.

Yeah, but will your average joe schmo? Or broke high school/college kids? The wait is easy, current gen still has legs, but the price my be crippling to many gamers.

Well I'm looking at it like this: a $500 system (not to mention the games) released worldwide in March. Parents won't be buying it for their kids like they do with Christmas. "You think you'll be getting a $500 system 3 months after Christmas?" will be the quote said by parents across the country, heh. And yeah, broke high school/college kids will have trouble with it too, think.

It would be the first non-fall console release since.. God, I can't even remember. I just can't see that being a good date to release a console with that price.

Of course, it won't launch in the spring, so that's fine. :P

Ah yes, exactly how i figured it. Cant wait to see the *real* madden.

I say Japan in may/june and US in the late fall personally. Give developers more time, hit holiday stride. Juice it up with media and seperate it from Xbox 360. Giving it a superior and more advanced feel, being a year later with tons of coverage from Japan. Also, more importantly, give gaming fans some time to recover from Xbox 360 and ready for a new console in a year. Somebody is going to want to wait on new systems that close together. And usually, they wait on the 2nd, grab the 1st available. You don't want PS3 to turn into anybody's seconds or for people to wait. You want a build up and explosion. With no advertising at all pre-Xbox 360, you're also going to get a lot of "wtf??"s. 'I just bought a new system'. I just really think it's a bad idea all around. Seperate yourself and assault with mindblowing games in the fall, and a GTA to launch with that looks like a serious leap over the PS2 GTA's.

...and AI controlled "sidekicks" fight alongside him as if they were actual human-controlled characters.

Surprised no one is talking about this yet. If true, this will be a huge change to how the series is played. Personally I don't think there has ever been a single AI ally character in any game that's been done right. But if someone is going to do it right, I wouldn't be surprised if it was Kojima.

A print magazine is really referring to Microsoft as "M$"? Is it run by usenet fanboys? :lol

Edit: However, very interesting about the online part. It seems Sony learned the lesson and making the right moves.

I was thinking that too, but the kid who typed it up (with his many other typos) could have done that himself.

Probable for Japan, maybe.

I think people are making way too much of Kutaragi's remarks about the PS3 being expensive. IIRC, both the Playstation and the PS2 debuted in Japan for the equivalent of $360+ USD, with the American releases clocking in noticeably cheaper. Even if the system is more expensive than earlier Playstation consoles, I seriously doubt it'll retail for more than $399.99 in the States w/o a hard drive, even if it launches in Japan at $450-$500. (The fact that MS is actually able to exert some competitive pressure in the West as opposed to Japan plays a part in that, too.)

The question is whether or not you'll have to pay like Xbox Live.

I dunno about you guys, but I don't really have the money to pay for two online services like that + PSU + FFXI, etc.

I want Sony and Nintendo offer Xbox Live-like services that are free. That would be awesome for the gamer and help online console play get more players. At the same time, it would make Xbox Live look like a ripoff.

I think they'll do everything to come out worldwide before June. In Summer 2005 there'll be the FIFA World Cup 2006 and Xbox 360, being official sponsor, will get great visibility from the event, so coming out with PS3 in the fall could be less effective to contrast it.

Ok, this needs SOLID CONFIRMATION quick.

That fucking "article" just confirmed GTA4 is for PS3, and a specialized game engine for it. That's huge news, imo. I won't believe any of this until I hear from more reliable sources.

PSM writes like that? It's been awhile since I last picked up a PSM but damn :lol if the magazine is full of "teh" and "M$" what went wrong? I think this shit was made up by someone no way in hell a professional magazine writes shit like that.

anyway if this is true then holy shit... what war? :lol

I think it was just typed up by some kid with less-than-stellar typing skills, myself. :p

Supposedly it's from the November issue "PS3 Exposed". Assuming its true you can account for all the spelling mistakes and M$'s by the fact that it had to be transcribed.

Sony's online service will be free. Mark my words. BUT, microtransactions will be a part of it. So for the extra cool stuff you will have to pay. But still, no dollar for ordinary online play.
+ developers will have the ability to make the online stuff in every game much more custom to their liking due to Sonys free ties.

1 giant step on Xbox Live.

Zeo said:

Well, for this kind of games (MMOGs), you won't need to pay Live too. However I think Sony and Nintendo's online services will be free. They'll have to be free, 'cause it will be the only weapon they could use against an already superior system like Xbox Live.

Damn. Guess I'll calm down and wait then.......

*twiddles fingers*

I'd always be pretty wary of PSM. This bit seems weird to me:

"If a March launch does occur, it owuld be accompanied by only a couple of first-party titles, another two to three from EA, and one title at most from their other thrid parties."

I believe Gundam is aiming for launch, and Koei said at E3 that they had two titles other than Ni-Oh that would be launch titles (unless I completely misheard that).

edit - apparently they said two other "large" titles, but it sounded really like launch to me :lol

Wait, the list says Suikoden V for PS3. What?

fuck suikoden look down... Castlevania for PS3!?! the fuck someone needs to confirm this thing and fast.

You don't understand. Suikoden V is for PS2.

yeah my bad forgot about that, I think you just found why this is BS, will to wait till the November issue of PSM to see is this was true.

Where was that officially confirmed? The thread here on GAF (from what I remember) was someone's interpretation of an intentionally vague quote.

We need a confirmation of this before jumping to discuss it, that list looks a little suspicious...

Where was that officially confirmed? The thread here on GAF (from what I remember) was someone's interpretation of an intentionally vague quote.

The game is listed on Famitsu as PS2, no doubts about it.

This article is just too weird, yeah. So much shit is confirmed in it that it's fucking ridiculous. There's gotta be like 20 or 30 scoops in it. I know we're nearing TGS and news is gonna start pouring in, but this shit is nuts. New PS3 Ghouls'N'Ghost?

I mean... I'm definitely extremely wary of even starting to believe this shit. I hope others take it with the smallest grain of salt EVER.

yeah seriously, this news is getting me far too exited. MGS4 news which sounds so cool, castlevania, GTA4, its all too much :D

Statements like this really get me. What do you think MS is doing with Live that's so amazing (technically or otherwise) that it couldn't be duplicated by a determined competitor? It's just a peer-to-peer matchmaking service with some bells and whistles, for crying out loud! Do you honestly believe it's that tough to handle stat-tracking or write VoIP code? The major advantage MS has had up until now was in mandating the use of standardized API's for online games and pushing both first- and third-party developers to make online functionality a key component in practically every title. So long as Sony and/or Nintendo adopt a similar approach right out of the gate, there's no technical reason why either company would be incapable of fielding a 'superior system' of their own.

Just like it was mentioned here awhile back by someone: Sony will keep saying early '06 to get people to pass on the 360 to "wait for the PS3". Then in the Spring, well after 360 launch Sony will delay it again, a little... Kinda stringing people along. :)

I agree with your statement Tellaerin.
I can see that decent downloads cost money due to bandwith and created content but a matchmaking service should be free.
