Why aren't the techies embracing the DS?

You're really trying to hard :lol
Dude, you have no fucking idea what a good touchscreen is like. See those far-apart dots on the lower screen? That is the resolution of the touch screen grid on the DS.

And what games require vertical continuity? If you say Mr. Driller, I'll punch you in the neck.

I already pointed out Sonic Rush. Someone else pointed out Touch & Go which does have a lot going on at once between both screens. Its gameplay would be gimped if it were just one screen.

I too agree with him that keeping everything intact in AW: DS would be possible on GBA, but a pain in the ass with just one screen and all the fronts, menus and info to go back and forth through. I do agree that stylus implementation sucks. The map is just a grid and the D-pad is much better for that kind of stuff.

If you're going to argue that no game mentioned truly requires it then perhaps you're right. But if it's used well, then what the hell does it matter? Also, it's already bene pointed out that Meteos plays like shit with a D-pad, and great with the stylus. All impressions I've read on Animal Crossing also state that stylus controls blow away previous control methods in the series. Nearly none of it necessary, but quite welcome nonetheless.

I find that applies more to the N-bots, sorry.

This thread has gone from:

"Emulating a DS? LOL!" / "God, you're dumb. I don't even know where to begin."

to:

"There's a working emulator but it's 10fps on my machine"

to:

"A mouse isn't as accurate as a stylus. I would never wanna play a game like Canvas Curse with a mouse."

And it was all the same guy too, which was weird.

How can they be "far apart" when the screen's only a couple of inches wide?

It works fine. It works a hell of a lot better than the PSP's touch screen. :lol

Well... it did take PSone 3.5 years to start producing games on that level. Side by side with comparable launch fodder like Ridge Racer, Toshinden or King's Field, stuff like Mario 64 DS or Feel the Magic look absolutely stunning.

sorry but no

look at burnout ds and tell me is superior to ridge racer on psx.or wipeout also, feel the magic looks stunning? lol

Actually, Meteos. It has standard button controls and it just doesn't work without the stylus. Yea, it is no more addictive than some other puzzle games out there but at least it plays different to begin with. Otherwise people would be calling it a clone of "x" puzzle game. That games like Meteos should not exist because they're merely "different and good" rather than "different and superior to everything else" is just absurd.

I like the cut of your jib.

It's true. Asphalt Urban GT (a launch DS game) is technically more advanced than RR1 or WO1 on PS1. In fact, DS is the only "32bit" machine to launch with a 60fps racing game.

Feel the Magic looks great, though it's due more to artstyle than technical prowess. Mario 64 DS looks better than almost any comparable PS1 3D freeroam platformers though I'd say, even outside launch period (Spyro, Tomb Raider, etc).

here's what launch period PS1 3D games actually looked like, just in case your memory's a bit fuzzy...

Of COURSE games look better on the DS than on the Playstation. DS games look roughly on par with N64 games, minus the N64's tiny texture limitation, and helped out by the tiny screen. And N64 games can still be viewed without shame. Not so PS1 games.

Thanks for the reminder--I didn't need it (still fire up my launch model Playstation sometimes), but obviously some people do.

and for the 12 hours that castlevania lasted, i didn't even regret it! then i bought phoenix wright and started to regret it again. :(

Phoenix wright isn't good? First I've heard, rag on it, i'm on the fence and need negative input since everyone seems to be praising it. I'm dirt poor these days, so I must be frugal.

i think i'm the only gafer who dislikes phoenix wright, but the last couple pages of the official thread should contain all the negative input you need. and also an incomprehensible and rancorous argument about that pointy-finger stylus capcom included with direct-sale preorders.

hahahahahahahahahahaha

game. set. match. I think many people on GAF forget how bad the PSX looked the first year or two. that system probably had one of the steepest development curves ever.

launch ps1 games and launch ds games probably aren't a fair indication of relative hardware strengths...developers have acquired 10 years of 3d experience in the interrim. of course there are already ds games that beat early ps1 games, but i'm not sure we'll ever see ds games that match vagrant story or metal gear solid, if only because no one's going to put that much effort into a ds game.

All true... so let's just take Faf's word for it. DS spanks all the 32bit machines. ;)
