Why do people pick up smoking cigerretes these days?

I'm an occasional smoker that has a routine of 1 cigarette per day for my morning break.

It feels good man. Get a bit of a nicotine kick and keeps me regular lol

Seriously though, it also calms me down a little.

I would like to switch to e-cigarettes but they are still too heavy and difficult to draw smoke.

Smoking makes you, and your clothes smell great. Saves you money on cologne/fragrance.

Uhhh... this must be a joke post? I don't really care if a person smokes as long as their smoke does not enter my vicinity, but what I hate most about cigarette smoke is the stink that permeates my clothes and hair just from being in the same room as a smoker.

The smell is tough to get out too. I either have to wash my clothes or hang them out on a sunny and windy day in the hope of neutralizing the smell.

I'm sorry, but I find the smell of smoke (which is in ALL smokes' clothes and belongings) intolerable.

I think it's a combination of independence, experimentation, and learned behavior from being around smokers for a long time.

I picked it up when I first entered college because I was legal and could buy them myself, I wanted to try it and see what the fuss was about, and I had also been influenced and conditioned to like cigarettes after growing up around a mother who smoked religiously indoors every day of my life.

Got somewhat addicted and was going through nearly a pack a day on the more stressful days. Quit after a year and a half cold turkey and it was the best decision I made. After coughing up tar for 3 months, I felt better, I smelled better, and I was saving money.

There's a highschool between my house and my college. On my walk to class I'll see kids at the highschool standing off school property smoking. It looks ridiculous. They look like they're 12.

It's baffling seeing people younger than me smoke, because even when I was in highschool smoking was pretty gross/uncool.

At least, to me it was.

I started out of pure curiosity when I was like 14, and found it to be something to do and a way to make conversation with new people...it worked but at the cost of becoming addicted to cigarettes, I've since quit cold turkey almost 2 years ago and it was the best idea I've ever had.
Although, I'll say I made a lot of friends and had a lot of good times smoking, and nothing will ever be able to replicate that feeling of having a cigarette after a meal, with a drink, or when you wake up. But I had to grow up and realize it was not worth it.

started when I was 12, probably to look cool and for the thrill of doing something forbidden. Now I'm 19 and still smoke, I fucking love it. A cigarette and a Red Bull in the morning and I'm motivated as fuck, pure harmony. A lot of people smoke in my country (23% of the entire population older than 14) though so kids pick it up more easily.

I'm always amazed when I see kids smoking these days, it wasn't even cool when I was in high school and the social stigma and bans on smoking in public places is far more commonplace these days.

I guess it's just what it always was, trying to look rebellious (oh the irony!)

I used to smoke for a couple of months until recently.

I would usually go through 2-4 cigarettes a week. Sometimes I'd go a full week without smoking a single cigarette or I'd go through a half a pack in a week.

Having a cigarette after a shitty day at work was nice but I caught some unrelated stomach issues and my GI said they would be further irritated by smoking so I gave it up.

Started smoking at 12, just because. My brothers did it, my friends did it, my brothers friends did it, my grandparents did it. So it was pretty common for me to see. So I tried it out one day and liked it. Started smoking maybe 2-3 a day, by my freshman year of high school was about half a pack a day.

Thats about where it stated. Half a pack a day, maybe a pack a day if i was partying or whatever. That is until Year 32, when I finally picked up an e-cig and thats all she wrote. Haven't touched a smoke in a full year now, not even a puff of one. And my nicotine in the juice is down to 14mg from 24 to start. So maybe a few years from now I'll be completely off the nicotine.

Stupid people smoke
ok, not really
, my mom and dad smoked a lot. I got asthma from it and my dad died from cancer despite him and mom stopped smoking almost 2 years earlier. I will never smoke a cigarette, not with how my asthma is today

Because it makes you look cool and hardcore, duh

*highfive* I'll get there one day hopefully. Good work buddy.

Edit: yeesh I thought I was bad and I didn't start smoking until 16 at least, and not really "seriously" smoking until 18-20. I am 27 now and basically a pack a day lol

Edit 2: to answer OP's question, I was depressed, anxious, socially awkward, didn't have the support system that I needed, and substance abuse was a convenient and fun way to address those problems. And it started with nicotine (remember when you got "high" off of a cigarette lol)

It amazes me that smokers are unaware of how terrible they smell and how stupid they look.

It amazes me how judgmental and wrong you are. Smokers are usually aware of how terrible they smell, and it has never looked stupid, unless you count the millions of times they huddle in little frozen groups outside in the winter.

I occasionally smoke while drunk. Feels good. Maybe something like 4 packs a year.

You know how pissed off this makes us addicts lol. I have a buddy who can do this, smoke a few cigs while he's drunk and then never feel the urge at all afterwards, hardly ever smokes. I am going to extract your DNA and inject it into myself.

Smoking looks about as cool as digging in your nose and eating your own snot. The impression I get is that the smoker always looks like an idiot. That's my immediate unavoidable thought whenever I see it. There's almost nothing more unattractive.

Sexy as fuck homie. Attractive people smoking look cool and ugly people smoking look dumpy. I probably smoke about 5 cigarettes a year and that's usually one I share while drinking.

Haha. I can understand that it can feel pretty unfair =D. I have some urges from time to time but so far I have managed to resist them (something like 6 years). I would also feel that I let down my mother if I started smoking (she feels pretty depressed from time to time over my sisters smoking). Pretty weird reason but works for me lol.

Statistics say most smokers begin smoking when they're basically kids, you know 13-17 years old. Ask anyone who smokes, no one begins smoking at 25-30. So at that age most do it to look cool and cause it's forbidden, like drinking. I started smoking at 15, at 16 i used to smoke in front of my mom even. Smoking got me through many sleepless nights in college and it was a great way to taking a break every couple of hours.

I used to smoke the most while working on my projects in architecture school and of course when drinking. Other than that it was maybe 5 a day tops.

I stopped smoking when i was 24, just before getting married. I still have a couple of hits very rarely when drinking, makes me really dizzy of course so i stop.

I rarely see people smoking now, mostly younger people(i'm 34) None of my friends smoke, and most of them used to when we were kids.

I started smoking through social smoking on nights out. Then I went all the way to smoking 20 a day nearly up until around 5/6 years ago. Since then I've reverted back to a social smoker (a few a week tops, many more on nights out but those sort of nights are like 2 a month) and don't get any urges. I should really use this ability to quit full stop.

I hate smoking indoors or in a car and despise it when people do so in front of me cos it stinks and is horrible being in a muggy smoky atmosphere inside.

I'm a weirdo. plsunderstand.

I don't think they would look any less sexier if they were eating their own feces. They all just look like human cancer factories.

Honestly, I can't even make it through the pilot episode of Mad Men because I find it so disgusting.

Grew up in a smoking household, hated them until I was around 17, but started sneaking one or two a day off and on. Second job I picked it up a lot more because it was an easy way to get out of work a couple of times a day, plus it's a food conversation starter. Still at a pack every 4/5 days, though.

Lol I think get even angrier about smoking than I do, and I get pretty fucking pissed.

Most of my friends smoke also most of my cousins.
But i don't smoke though. Maybe someday I'll try since I'm curious what it feels like.

What kind of stupid question is that?

It's a valid question. Going through life avoiding anything that is dangerous for your health seems like a chore.

Some people here are downright insulting about other's smoking. Maybe they should look at the shitty habits they have.

Self righteous people are unbearable.

When someone tells you to not do something, often the first reaction is to say fuck you and do it anyway.
Obviously this isn't always the case but, that's what happened with me.

In my first two jobs, smokers got special treatment. They'd stop for smoke breaks periodically whereas the rest of us were expected to keep working.

The most ridiculous is when I'd go outside and hang out with them, then the supervisor would ask me why I'm out there. And then he'd sit down for a smoke.

I grew up in a whole family of smokers and all I ever heard from them was how much they wanted to quit. So I've never even tried a cigarette out of a complete lack of interest. But shit, I could understand why I'd start if it meant I got 3-4 extra breaks in the day.

For me it was like a quick anti-stress dose. It worked for awhile till it made stress worse and worse.

I smoked for like 20 years... now using an ecig... much better now i guess :P
Sorry to break it to you but ecigs are not any better. In fact might be worse according to every study I read.

If you smoke weed I Think it's easier to get into cigarettes. You already have the lighter and the lungs for it.

Plus it's legal so you can smoke in public

Fuck me, you need to lighten up. Or maybe light up. Either.

The people I know who still smoke only do so because of stress relief.
I know a good few people who do it for stress. I know a guy who successfully quit smoking, and then took it up again later because work was starting to be a bitch. It's sad.

I know a guy who will purposely text and drive because he wants to see how far he can go
Endangering himself "to see how far he can go" is fucking stupid enough, but this fucker is gambling with the lives of others too. Fuck. Him.

Let's just all agree that at the very least smoking makes you look cool. I mean, super cool. Plus, if you keep on smoking, it can deepen your voice and add some rasp to it. Think about it, you'll look like Humphrey Bogart and sound like James Earl Jones. Instant respect.

lol I'll be honest, I sort of look down on people when I see them smoking. I definitely do not think it looks cool at all. don't care how hot the person is doing it, shit is just nasty imo. I think it comes from resentment since my mom, dad and sister all smoke and I fucking hated that shit growing up. going to school smelling like cig smoke fucking sucked. butts all over the house. car smelled terrible. it flat out sucked. one time i was taking a bath and my mom's ashtray fell into the bathtub while i was in it. fucked i tell ya. i won't even touch a cig. that being said i have a ton of friends who smoke and i don't look down on them really but when i see people i don't know smoking I instantly look down on them and i know thats pretty fucked up but i can't help it.

Here's a worse one: I smoked regularly for about 2 years, then quit cold turkey. I still smoke (a lot) when alcohol is involved, but when I'm sober, I find it incredibly repulsive. Especially the day after drinking.

Smoking cigarettes is as intimate as we can become with fire without immediate excruciation. Every smoker is an embodiment of Prometheus, stealing fire from the gods and bringing it on back home.

We smoke to capture the power of the sun, to pacify Hell, to identify with the primordial spark, to feed on them arrow of the volcano. It's not the tobacco we're after but the fire. When we smoke, we are performing a version of the fire dance, a ritual as ancient as lightning.”

-Tom Robbins - Still Life with Woodpecker

I started before I read that book and still remember that when/if I do smoke. I quit years ago from pack a day marb reds. Smoked for 7 years and never really was addicted - when I quit it just quit and was an asshole for a day or 2.

Why do people pick up drinking alcohol these days?
Why do people pick up eating salt these days?

Vices are vices, we're all imperfect beings

The social aspect is also really influencing and important. My Sister never smoked in her life but when we used to go out together on nights out she saw everyone smoking in the beer garden and wanted to be socially involved and included so kept asking me for cigarettes primarily as a means just to socialise with everyone and be involved in the conversation. I've seen that happen across my whole life in so many different scenarios. Hell, it was even how I initially started. I'm not saying it's a good thing; smoking is generally pretty negative but it at least provides another reason as why people may feel inclined to begin.

Since I drink coffee a bit too much everyday for years (around 4 - 5 glasses of instant coffees minimum), I wanted to tone it down before my kidney and liver fail me, so I picked up smoking.

But then I stopped, smoking is too expensive (I smoked around 1 pack daily), so now I eat sugar-free mints as a substitute. But then I eat more mints than I'm supposed to everyday (around 1 pack of mint daily), so now I get diarrhoea very often.

I really need to find better substitute.

I could use a cig right now. Rarely smoke, maybe go through 2 packs PER YEAR. Last one was months ago. It really does lessen anxiety. Can hlp with sitting down to so homework.

Isn't salt like critical to life?

Alcohol has been shown to be somewhat beneficial... In moderation. And depending on the form I guess.

Smoking... Eh. I can do cigars and hookah. But cigarettes and weed? Meh. I just don't like the feeling of hot particulate entering the lungs. Hookah just doesn't seem as harsh. And this is done maybe once a year. If that.

Seriously, why do people pick up drinking alcohol these days. As someone who doesn't drink I can't help it but I look down on those people. Such a disgusting habit.

a.k.a.

What the fuck is wrong with some people in this thread. Get over yourself.

Being around people that smoke.

Working in restaurants and college (from the people that picked it up from work in high school).

Surprisingly easy to pick it up once you try it.

Seems to me that you're the kind of person who can't relax and enjoy yourself without smoking.

I won't smoke indoors unless it's pretty well ventilated, or a decent sized room with a high ceiling. I never get smoking rooms in hotels.
Okay, unless I'm somewhere really cold as fuck that doesn't have a decent (preferably heated) smoking shelter.

And I can't fathom how people smoke in their cars with all the windows rolled up. Or use the ashtray in the car. Windows rolled up has to be suffocating, and using the ashtray will stink up the car right quick. Use an empty beverage container and empty/replace it at your next stop. All rental cars now are "non-smoking," but fuck it... if you keep the window rolled down and don't use the ashtray (and are careful with your ashing so as to not have ember burns on the rear seat), you'll be fine.

Fuck me, you need to lighten up. Or maybe light up. Either.

No shit. I really love how this thread has outted users who have their heads shoved hard up their own ass. Hell sometimes I want to start smoking just because of the evangelical non-smokers judgemental behavior. Afaic they're just petty people saying petty things.
