I saw it in the theater when I was 13. Great experience it was. In fact, they should re-release it in the theater. With no changes. Just to show what exactly was accomplished way back in 1993. It was a phenomenal feat. I can't think of any other movie in our lifetimes that took every other movie released before it and laughed in its face, graphically.
Not even Avatar. I consider Avatar a marginal improvement over what we've had. Jurassic Park ushered in a whole new generation in one stroke. JP influenced nearly every CGI movie after it.
I know you said raptors in your post, but that picture most closely resembles a T-Rex, and T-Rex didn't have feathers. The larger an animal gets the better its ability to preserve heat, and so a T-Rex didn't have or need feathers. The CGI doesn't really hold up too well. I don't know what you guys are talking about, it looks dated.
HOWEVER: That doesn't mean the effects and stuff aren't awesome. They did clever angles and focuses to where the CGI isn't overbearing like most modern CGI-fests.

Besides, you can see the wires very clearly in the Dilophosaurus scene. Now that sucked.
They found quill knobs on the forearms of the Velociraptor. Not to mention some of his ancestors were found with feathers covering their entire body.
The thing is, quill knobs might not mean feathers, but could also be quills. There have been other dinosaurs found with quills on the back of their tails.

Yeah, Avatar suffers from being shiny shiny. But it's animations are decent. It's a mixed package. Why I labeled it a small step up.

I thought this movie was hilariously entertaining because it's so silly. A great popcorn movie.
BTW, I plan on trolling JP1 for next year's April Fools just for shits and giggles. There are a shit ton of problems people tend to overlook in this movie that are almost as baffling as JP2.

I don't have a good eye for CG, I don't know how technically advanced the actual graphics are, but the way its implemented in this movie is damn near perfect. It never even crosses my mind that I'm watching fake dinosaurs. And while the CG is used with restraint, it's not like it's being hidden or obscured by poor lightning or spastic editing... you get a good, long look at these things in a lot of different conditions. Unbelievable that a movie this old still looks so convincing.

JP 1 had friendly/passive dinos, sick dinos, and aggressive dinos. A good mixture of them. JP 2 was merely a monster flick. Run run run, they're going to get you! That was the whole movie in a nutshell, with a tacked on San Diego scene at the end.
Edit - Were there any non-aggressive dinos in JP 2? The fact that I can't even remember tells you my main problem with the movie.

Eddie's death is still the most epic death in any movie. He was picked up by a T.rex, tossed into the air like a rag doll, and then pulled in half by 2 T.rexes. How many people you know got killed by 2 T.Rexes?

Besides, I do love the movie, I'm just gonna troll it for fun and on April Fools. So hopefully, when it's released that day, people are smart enough to figure out I'm only kidding.

Few reasons the cg still looks awesome
- Only 50 shots/2 year. Modern big films an have with lots of vfx can have 500+/1 year
- the people they had working on it were really gifted artists in many different medium. Although the standard today is to be highly specialized, usually the artists don't have the same breadth that these guys did.
- Smart use of animontronics and puppetry to reduce shots that didn't need to be cg. Having a hybrid approach isnt as common as it used to be.
The movie was shot really well and is entertaining, and you tend to ignore any technical imperfections because of it when they happen.

Amazing, simply amazing. I heard from a couple of people who had the same experience as me. They all thought it was make-up effects until they found out it was CGI. I didn't even know until I was watching The Oscars that night. When I saw that, I KNEW it would win.
Anyone go and see Rango yet? I hear ILM did an amazing job with the CG, IQ and animation. Supposedly and all around visual stunner. I'm now wanting to see it despite not having much initial interest. It seems most of the commercials just wanted to make sure I knew Johnny Depp was voicing the main character.

I was on the set of The Lost World, and the reason the dinosaurs don't look cg, is that they mostly weren't
They had animatronic versions of all the dinosaurs, and miniature ones too. The dinosaurs even felt like you would expect a dinosaur to feel.

I watched JP3 awhile ago and you can definitely see the differences between it and JP1. I'm watching JP1 now and the effects are still pretty believable.

Reading this thread and watching the before and after CGI youtube video has made me think about CGI in a whole new light. So is the Visual Effects Supervisor responsible for deciding what type of effects to use where, or the director? Someone else? Whoever it is, the sheer amount of vision required to be able to plan these things out, and even for the director to have the vision to know how a scene is going to look without a large part of it present during filming, is mind-boggling.
Watching Jurassic Park again tonight has made me appreciate how effects improve a movie, while making me sad about how few people in the industry today seem to have the vision to realize that concept.
