My main problems with it are the writing which required too much suspension of disbelief. Also the tone is all over the place.

Indy needs the map book. So he sneaks into Nazi Germany and gets it without even us knowing exactly how he did it and "escapes" with zero effort.

The bad guy Nazi finds Indy and his dad as they are trying to escape from Germany on a GERMAN Zeppelin and Indy just throws him out the window and they just let them fly away. WTF?

Anyways this movie is just all over the place with its humor and plot holes while trying to make us take it really seriously.

I have more nitpicks like the tank chase taking too long but those are more minor. For me it's the weakest of the trilogy.

Because Crusade was a step up from Temple of Doom. Temple is the worst Indy film.

I know everyone hates on 4, but I’ll gladly take Shia and CGI monkeys (well, okay not “gladly” per say, but it’s the less painful option) over Willie screaming her head off every 5 seconds. Honestly one of my most hated characters in all of cinema. Some hate on Short Round but he barely registered with me considering he was chill in comparison to the “adult” freaking out all the time, and the movie would have been way better if it was just Indy and Short Round on the adventure.

Also, everyone freaks out over the fridge scene in 4, yet 2 had an equally bullshit scene with the falling life raft that should have killed everyone who fell.

Don’t get me wrong, 2 has good moments, for sure, but it’s weighed down by the bullshit. Asking me to enjoy 2 is like asking me to enjoy a really well made feast while I’m simultaneously being punched in the face every 30 seconds, it’s just not going to happen. 4 is mostly unremarkable but I’m not reaching for some headache medicine when I watch it.

If 1 is a 10/10 and 3 is a 9/10 for me, I view 4 as a 5/10 and 2 as a 3/10.

Also, just want to say, I’m a sucker for “riding/running off into the sunset” shots as the ending. Last Crusade’s final shot is just:

the ending of 3 is perfect, but man it’s intro is also amazingly perfect with young indy and that amazing transition to present time. the hat scene. the “you lost today…” line. all soooo good

BTW did Willie really scream that much? I didn't notice her screaming any more than a normal female would under the crazy shit she went thru in the movie (and not being some tomboy adventurer like Marion).

I mean, if you were crawling in a pit of scorpions, or being lowered into a lava pit, wouldn't even a dude be screaming quite a bit?
Or maybe I just didn't mind Willie cuz Kate Capshaw is freaking gorgeous.

IMHO Alison Doody was my least favorite Indy girl, she's just plain bland, and did lots of annoying screams too.

It fleshed out the character a lot. Before that, Jones could be seen as more of a sleazy creep who starred in trashy movies. I think that Temple of Doom looks better in retrospect than it was received at the time because since then Tarantino made exploitation movies "cool" and every movie head under 40 is like a slave to Tarantino's taste for trash.

What can i say, it's probably because i watched temple of doom and crusade multiple times before even watching raiders, so the novelty was already a bit off, also i like the blonde chick\shorty and daddy jones companions way better than the chick in raiders.

Almost all movies have weak points like those.
But Last Crusade…

It fleshed out the character immensely. Raiders was a very static film and Indy was a guy ready to drop the greatest quest of his life and give in to drinking after the death of an old love interest. In LC, the dude travels all over the world and fights Nazis until the very end. This is really the movie that cemented the figure of Indiana Jones in the public’s mind, which is also why Kingdom was so disappointing.
The Ford-Connery chemistry is just incredible. None outshines the other despite the two being both very charismatic actors. Connery manages to balance the comic and serious aspects of his character masterfully.
It’s the most quotable Indie movie, for all the best reasons. Top. Men.
The treasure quest parts of the movie are fantastic. LC was enormously influential on movies, books and video games that came after it.
The direction is flawless. Yeah, the tank scene is too long in retrospect. It also had me hanging on the edge of my seat when I first watched it. Steven knows his craft.
The final part in Petra is pure magic.
The ending shot is perfection.

LC is like Return of the Jedi to me. A more modern, flashier, faster, more commercial take on the theme than the original, but so much more enjoyable and entertaining on the whole, that I can forgive its flaws without a glance back.

Where is the block feature! Temple of Doom worse than crystal? Each their own.

I rewatched the 4 movies back to back last week and Crystal Skulls is way better than I remembered.

Temple is great because it’s vastly different than the first and 3rd one. 3rd one is borderline comedy. 2nd is borderline horror.

Connery and Ford really bring the charm in the Last Crusade. That is most of it. The other thing Last Crusade really nails down is a terrific opening and ending with some incredibly memorable scenes in between. It has one of the weaker scripts but some of the most brilliant moments in the entire series. It's too hard to not love this movie.

The Temple of Doom is the outlier for me, not immediately taking the Crystal Skull into account. There's just so much about the movie that doesn't resonate with me. I've tried watching it a few times, and each time I just find myself not all that interested. It has its moments, though. Even now, having looked up the plot, it strikes me as an adventure Dr. Jones just happened into. Like, he wasn't originally hunting for the stones. The thing he set out to do at the start of the movie has nothing to do with the plot. It's just a great big mess, and then you have Short Round and Willie to deal with...

I think the Last Crusade will always be my favorite. If it had nothing else, at least it has Der koniggratzer march playing in the marching scene -- I'm a sucker for marching music.

Yeah, I saw that on Wikipedia too. There's just a dozen reasons why that movie doesn't resonate with me, but I especially like that Lucas understood this about that movie. He's absolutely right that if Temple of Doom was just another Raiders of the Lost Ark, which the Last Crusade kind of is, then it's all just more of the same. Last Crusade is good in part because Temple of Doom was different.

With all Indy films you have use your imagination as to how he escaped that scenario.

1. He drove from Austria to Germany and attended a Nazi Rally disguised as a Nazi solider.... fine with me so far. He gets the book and escapes the same way he got in... all good to me, its also 1938, the world isnt at War with Germany yet.

2. Indy throws Nazi out of Zeppelin, this happens just as the Zeppelin is taking off, staff on this ship didnt see this so no reason to stop the Zeppelin.

There's your justification.
