Why exactly do DS games have "Surround Sound?"

I noted this in both Kirby and Mario--I mean, it's not as if someone's going to hook their DS into a 5.1 system...are they? :-|

The only other plausible explanation would be that you could use DS games in the rev, hrm.

So you can immerse yourself in a world of unfiltered low-resolution textures, chunky polygons, screendoor translucencies, and giant pixels more effectively, of course.

Obligatory DS Flaw #35b: The owners. Why do they hate gaming so much that they're satisfied by spending $150 for 1997-era hardware? Do they REALLY think a touch screen will fix their sense of alienation from the market? Maybe they should take up crochet-work or picking up truckers as hobbies instead.

So are you saying you don't like the graphics on the DS?

Its just a simulation of it, they call it "virtual surround sound", its still stereo output, just with... something that mimics what it would sound in surround.. but isnt..

$150 for 1997 era hardware or $250 for 1999 era hardware? What's the difference really? I'll stick with my SP for now. :)

Does Drinky leave a bot to post his DS trolls now? They're starting to seem all too familiar. Almost cookie cutter :p

As for the sound mode.. beats me.

As opposed to $80 for 1993-era, or $250 for 1999?

I wouldn't so much describe my feeling as "doesn't like" when I have the more accurate phrase "utterly mortified by" available.

Obligatory DS Flaw #112: No basic texture filtering. How bloody cheap *is* Nintendo?

So NDS is nostalgiac for PSX fans?

:lol :lol :lol Oh man, you're cracking me up today.

The leap between 1997 and 1999 is a huge one. Sadly, the DS 2D barely paces with the GBA, SNES, and Neo-Geo, thanks to the 1993 resolution.

Are there actually any mods on this board anymore? This shit with the same guy ruining every fucking DS thread is getting old. My god, I got banned for far little than this shit. But hey, ban me again because I know we like to treat posters differently here on the GAF. Well fuck you all.

Here's a hint: sell your DS and buy a PSP, and we can be bestest buds. We'll hold hands and traipse through the gardens together, sunbeams illuminating our smiling cherubic miens, birds of brilliant azure all atwitter about us.

Or you can keep your DS and SINK INTO HELL.

If you change between stereo and surround sound you can hear the difference. You have to be in a quiet room though. It's kinda neat, I discovered it while I was pinching a loaf.

Matlock, you can also notice a bit of good stereo usage when you try advance titles on it. The DS speakers are a pretty damn nice :D

trolling wasn't allowed! :) :P

We're you trying to see if your bread was dreaming?

BTW: Hey Doug, want to tell GAF how you bitched and moaned about not being a moderator so that people couldn't ignore you--then when you weren't an admin, repeated until the administration placated your tender ego and shut you up?

Now stay the fuck out of my DS threads.

No, the PS2 library trumped the PSOne library quite awhile ago. Most PSOne 3D games are fundamentally unplayable now -- much like the DS.

Wow, Drinky is posting so much he is becoming redundant. Bitching about the DS and PSP must have killed his brain cells. :(

This thread is pure humor so far... I actually prefer the DS's sound output to the PSP's, PSP sounds too trebly and doesn't have enough bass (especially noted when playing EDM heavy games like Lumines or Wipeout). DS has a tiny bit more bass action going on. You really need to hook PSP up to a decent set of speakers to get good sound out of it. I still have yet to be impressed by a DS soundtrack, unfortunately :P

I dunno. I'd still take Rage Racer, Alundra, Valkyrie Profile and R-Type Delta over pretty much anything on PS2. This gen sucks on consoles all around compared to last. :/

Not if you're an RPG fan... PSOne's RPG library still shits all over PS2's, even though it looks like that situation may not hold true anymore once we get Radiata Stories, Grandia III, DQ8, etc.

The DS surround imitation is really obvious. Try switching between stereo and surround in Mario 64. It's neat, but unfortunately it's scratchy with certain effects at low volume.

P.S. The PS2 library is pretty fucking far from being better than the PSX library.

It's true. I think next gen, I'll just download EAD, Capcom, SunSoft, Konami, Compile, IREM, Chunsoft, Quintet & Technos games on Revolution and skip everything else. :)

It's YOUR fault for not mentioning me in the OT hate thread! I hafta work extra hard, now. :(

You need to use a quality vs quantity approach. That's just good trolling sense.

I dunno; would you say Diablos is quality over quantity?

I'd say quantity is by far and away the most effective trolling angle -- if I were trolling, that is, and not offering up an informed albeit negative opinion like I am now!

Framerate is the most important thing about the visuals hardware is capable of in 3d games now imo.. I think it's what has aged the 32/64 bit era games the most.

I find < 20fps PlayStation and N64 games unplayable. But as long as the framerate is good and the gameplay is up to scratch - you can still have a great time. I still like Intelligent Qube, Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy, Gran Turismo, Soul Blade, Porsche Challenge, Chrono Chross, Vagrant Story, Mario 64, Zelda, etc.

This is why I hate Ubisoft so much for not getting it right with Rayman DS and Splinter Cell DS... if you can't get lower quality 3d running well (NFSU2 DS has really impressed me as I've unlocked faster cars) then don't bother.

IAWTP - Drinky has made some absolutely hilarious troll posts in the past ("Let's Pictochat, I'll pretend to be Mario and you be Luigi and we can have an emergent gameplay experience!"), but one sentence soundbites just aren't doing it for me nowadays :P

Here's a hint: STOP TROLLING AND STAY OUT OF THE DS THREADS IF YOU HATE IT SO MUCH.

I thought all trolling was supposed to be met with a ban this week? Or does that only apply to people who aren't mods or admins?

But one good troll can lead to pages worth of chaos. And the best trolling comes from not looking like you are trolling. And you look like you are trolling even when you are not, you lose TWICE!

If you do intend to spam, try using a more humorous approach which you used to be good at. Like how Nintendo is making a generation of blind children with the DS or something.
