Why hasn't Mario Kart added a story mode?

??? Mario kart is PACKED with content.

It is? In what way? I mean battle mode has been shit for years now, and half the tracks in each game are redone versions from previous games. The content is no where near up to par with anything you could compare it to.

I would love a mario kart with full story mode with complete voice acting for every character (preferebly 30fps). Too bad nintendo will never do it.

I think this would be great. CTR and DKR didn't exactly have "deep" stories, I don't think anyone wants that - just a fun hub world with level progression would be cool.

Rosalina's storybook was a really cool addition, but it was a lot easier to put in than an actual story mode I'm sure.

They totally phoned in the extra modes with MK8 though.
Fun game that I still play on the rare occasion (and put like 60 hours into playing with GAF in the launch week), but the Battle Mode shouts rushed.
Or just poorly designed. I hope it's the former, because if they actually thought it was good design I'm afraid for 9.

Precisely, but Nintendo doesn't do hub worlds anymore either. Rather than just replaying the same courses over and over at each difficulty to unlock everything it would be a blast to have a story mode with all sorts of unique challenges, boss races, w/e else.

Oh I forgot how much I enjoyed the bosses in those games. Especially in DKR where the courses were (IIRC) specifically designed for them.

Jeez, I can think of few games that need a story mode less than Mario Kart. Do we need one for Tetris, too? :P

A Mario Kart built around Battle Mode would be pretty good.

That would be Double Dash!!

Not built around, but dang if it didn't have the best Battle Mode ever - MINUS the lack of Block Fort. If it had that as well it would really be the best possible MK Battle Mode.

Bob-Omb Battle and Shine Runners were so fun.

It doesnt need story mode, it doesnt need an open world, it doesnt need RPG elements, just keep making fun games. You improve upon the formula that you have. If you think of an idea that fits and makes the game better you can put it in there, you dont just put things from other genre's in just because you feel like you are suppose to.
Or having a story mode or open world sounds like fun so why not try? How is it hard to understand?

No it isn't, you can beat all the tracks in less than 2 hours and I don't think there's even 30 different karts in the game. If another racer released today with only 30 cars people would lose their shit, but Mario Kart gets away with it. The only thing I can give them credit for is having a lot of characters to race with.

I'd love it. I enjoy any sliver of a story or sense of progress in games, even if most people think it's stupid and "just want to play the game."

Mario Tennis and Golf on GBA were amazing. I loved how you had a campaign mode where you unlocked stuff and raises your stats and then eventually
got invited to the special league to face off against Nintendo characters.

The story modes in the DS Taiko Drum Master games are so fun also. I just enjoy a sense of progression, even in arcade-style games, because I need the hooks to keep me going.

Yeah but how many of those racers offer 4 player multiplayer and co-op online gaming (for no additional fee)?

I'd prefer it if they finally got off their lazy asses, fixed the Battle mode and added Missions back in.

Story mode in Mario Kart makes about as much sense to me as a mini game party mode in a Halo game.

Someone who thinks of racing games as a collection of tracks that one can "beat" in less than two hours strikes me as someone who doesn't understand the point of racing games.

This is why I'm never buying a Mario Kart game. CTR and S&AS Racing Transformed single player modes are so fun and challenging, I don't even want to play a kart game that only features a Championship mode as single player content.

Fuck all that! Just make a Mario Kart Anthology game and put every MK game into one collection and I will pay monstrous amounts of money for it.

Is it weird that I expected OP to mention Street Fighter?
To be honest, I kinda suspected this thread to be a SFV-related account suicide when I saw it on the front page amidst the other three dozen SFV threads. People seem to be really concerned about that game.

Edit - Clarification: not talking about the actual content of the thread itself, just about the timing and my personal opinion of OPs suggestion.

If NX gets rid of the need to develop both a handheld and console Mario Kart. Then they could add more content and perhaps DLC. They could release a $30 adventure mode dlc later in MK's lifetime.

I'm always baffled at WANTING story in racing games anyway. There might be some OK examples, F-Zero GX at the least has a world to flesh out and went completely insane at the end, but more than most genres it's just been "man I just want to race."

Reintroducing mission mode would be nice though. I'd think the real desire is for a campaign of sorts to work through, and needing to tackle various challenges would be good enough. Too bad that was popular in DS then casually tossed away afterwards.

Story mode is obviously a bad idea for Mario Kart but it desperately needs something more than the standard GPs at this stage.

Mario Kart 8 was so incredible in terms of gameplay, roster and track design that I feel like the only chance they have of topping it is introducing better single player content, so I'm hopeful that that's where their focus will lie.

I wouldn't mind a campaign mode with cart customization and little pre and post race cutscenes on the level of the stuff you see in fighting games or the other Mario Sports games, but a "story" mode in Mario Kart makes about as much sense as a VS mode for Life Is Strange

Like subspace emissary, but with Karts.

I'd like that.

Throw Link in a a story character along with Animal Crossing boy and girl.

What a story!

'Mario let's have a race'

'it's a ok'

'hey we wanna race too'

'mamma mía, what a race it shall be'

And so they raced

Yeah, i mean when i play Mario Kart all i want is a cinematic, epic story about the power of love and friendship where our heroes journey together to solve the great mysteries of life.

That's ALL i need from a kart racer starring silly characters throwing bananas on each other.

This game has more tracks, and even if half are redone, with MK8 they're practically new for the most part. Just because battle mode sucks doesn't mean they are cutting down content.
