Why have webcams plateaued?

It seems that the Logitech c920 or c930 are the best of the best and both of those are 4 and 3 years old respectively.

Are we ever going to get a 1080p 60fps webcam?

I'm tired of watching laggy and choppy cam site vids man

Choppy cam videos have a lot more to do with upload speed then the quality of the camera. Most people do not have the upload speeds needed for 1080 30, let alone 60. Most of the USA is still doing good to have 5 down 1 up in large swaths of the country for example.

Get this guy on it

Bandwidth and most people I know are using their phones. At my last job we had professional web conferencing equipment though that did 1080, but it's expensive. Most people don't care about the FPS in webcams, but I have seem some porn webcam sites with them.

I thought there where 60fps webcams out there, either way the average person probably doesn't put much thought into it and buys some garbage usb 2 average shit.

There is a high chance one of the clients in any given conversation is using a cellular connection and/or in an area with crappy internet. Without better compression technology that isn't CPU intensive, it's hard to justify better equipment for what'll inevitably be downgraded (forced into a lower res by the application).

And there it is. Because we've reached "good enough" for webcams, few people are going to buy more expensive models or trade out old models. The people who have a true need are going to be willing to spend more, hence enterprise pricing.

And yeah, probably web streaming speeds are the bigger issue with choppiness. Besides, it's not like any webcam I've seen allows exposure control, etc, so the nicer the sensor and higher the resolution chances are you're still going to get shit because people are still going to be shooting in underexposed rooms.

I don't think there's even a market for webcams anymore.

It came back stronger with the popularity of game streaming sites like Twitch and also YouTube LP's. Most don't want to hassle with hooking up a much nicer (video) camera on a mount or tripod and make it sync properly. More convenient to just plug in a good webcam and go.

If you want high end ccds for a web camera then look at planetary astrophotography cameras. Bring your wallet

Large swathes of the US still have 0 up and 0 down. This really needs to be a public utility.

My Logitech c whatever is good enough that I can use it in lieu of roll20 to roll dice in DND. It did take a lot of screwing around with settings to make the result readable, but it works. For normal calls it's more than plenty. Cost me 20 bucks. What more do I want?

nothing

I've never watched a live camgirl show, but I have seen some sessions re-uploaded on other streaming sites. My favorite upload has been a compilation of girls reacting in real time to a donor that just sent them over $1000 worth of tokens. It's similar to the twitch donor live reaction videos except in these cases usually the girl is in the middle of fingering herself when the huge unexpected sum of money comes in. Its the most heartwarming jerk off session you'll ever experience.

But you're right the video was still under 10 FPS and low res. You would think even the average cam would be able to stream at least 32FPS at 720p

I use a Xonar soundcard, because my onboard sound had way too much interference noise.
Use the same sound card. For gaming headsets onboard is good enough, but when I compare my DT 990 Pro between Xonar DGX in exciter mode (> 64 Ohm iirc) and regular ass onboard sound on my 2nd PC there's a noticable difference.

Because when you live in a backwards country (like me) you only get 700kbps upload and good luck streaming anything better than 480p with massive pixel artefacting.

I feel like even when you're not streaming and are just using the camera locally it still looks and sounds like shit. Better than the laptops built in camera, but nowhere near as nice as most quality YouTube and Twitch streamers I've seen.

I just bought a super nice Logitech one and the quality was still disappointing. Just for reference: what kinds of cameras are people like Kinda Funny or Source fed, etc using?

Is it the same guy donating every time? I'm imagining a perverted version of Brewster's Millions.

For video quality it's size, looking at the teeny tiny pinhole camera in my MBP it's no wonder the 720p it manages still looks pretty bad.

They could start doing bigger ones like some phones

Then after that of course, bandwidth, to have a good video chat you need under 200ms latency and sending huge ass frames would probably take a toll on your home networking gear and not be smooth anyways.

More than webcams, I feel like mobile phones' memory cards/internal storage memory have somewhat plateaued. I bought a phone almost 4 years ago that wasn't all that expensive which had 32GB of storage memory. Nowadays expensive models don't have all that much more, if any. 32GB is still common for high-end-ish phones. Some might have 64GB. You'd imagine that in 4 years storage would have more than doubled.

Yeah that's what I'm talking about. I watch reuploads of the stuff on porn sites and it's all low res, grainy and choppy.

Like I totally get and understand it's a bandwidth thing but the cams themselves even when recording locally are still pretty ass

It's also why streamers don't care about 60fps productions since the bandwidth is too high for streaming for the average pleb or something thereabouts.
