Why is Shadow Warrior an open world procedurally generated loot shooter now?

Lol Hard Reset was terrible. It's a "classic FPS" by people who apparently have no idea what classic FPS play like.

Well a lot of them made Painkiller Black so they know exactly what makes a 'classic FPS' fun. Gonna have to disagree with you their dude though I will admit I by far prefer Shadow Warrior over Hard Reset.

The only words I like in the thread title is Shadow Warrior. I was going to go into this game blind but now I'm not even sure I want to try it, I guess I'll see how it's received. The first reboot was really good.

I can't even fathom what Shadow Warrior has to do with this at all.

I played the first reboot for about an hour before losing interest because of its shitty level design and this looks like another step down. I just don't get why this is called Shadow Warrior at this point, what does this have to do with the original?

Every time I see procedurally generated at this point my eyes roll so fucking hard they're close to bursting in their sockets.

Something else important to note is that this game has straight up wangs in it. No joke, during the E3 demo I had to find an artifact and the artifact ended up being a desiccated demon dong with a spiked c-ring on it.

Level design or demon cocks guys? Demon cocks, hell yeah!

I dunno, but it took the game from a "must buy" to a "strong maybe" for me.

Tired of all the bloated bullshit games.

Same. Don't really have the time for them all anymore. If the ancillary crap doesn't inhibit the game, then fine, but it's usually tied to gameplay abilities/skills which directly affects enjoyment.

I didn't know it's procedurally generated and that it has loot. Maybe it will work. The only thing I actively dislike is the floating damage numbers that pop up. I hate that and floating health bars in non-RPGs.

They should've had 3-player Co-Op, and named them Lo Wang, Mid Wang and High Wang.

Make that Lo Wang, Lo Pan and Lo Blo.

We knew that since announcement and I can't be happier. Shadow Warrior 2013 is the best shooter of the decade and now they are adding about 50 more guns, incredible new environments, verticality, coop, hub, more characters for Wang to interact with and even slightly changing tile sets (weather, orientation, etc.). This is literally my dream game since forever! No doubt will this be THE FPS of the year and I am not familiar with any game that will be able to come even close to the awesomeness that is Wang!

All in all, this game will be WANGTASTIC!!

Lo Pan? Where's the purile pun?

Seems like a good move to me, There's a niche left wide open, Borderlands does big numbers on PC but the pre-sequel was weak and 3 is a long ways off, as is any kind of Destiny port/sequel. If the jump in quality Flying Wild Hog makes with this is similar to the improvement from Hard Reset to Shadow Warrior, this game will turn out great.

New interview with Slawomir Uliasz, narrative designer at Flying Wild Hog, about Shadow Warrior 2.

PCPP: I was doing a bit of research on it and I read somewhere that the story levels wouldn’t be as procedurally generated as the other content. Is that correct, or how are you approaching the idea of being able to mix procedural generation and open-approach?

Slawomir Uliasz: Well, it won’t be as procedurally generated as grinding levels, grinding missions… first of all, there will be tiles, because our levels are composed of tiles, they are, like, 200 metres square, which are connected to each other to create the whole level. So there are tiles which are dedicated almost solely for the story and only after they play their role in the story there are another mix of other procedurally generated levels.

Our level designers are painstakingly… put a lot of effort to make sure that objectives on the levels are generated in places they should be, like, for instance, you are looking for something which is in the house, which should be located in some kind of house, some kind of building, so they make sure that it won’t be generated outside of the building in the forest, that it will be generated inside the house, so in this way, yes, they are slightly less procedurally generated that everything else, but it’s still… you won’t be sure. But still, everything around it is procedurally generated from pieces. When we both start playing at day one, each of us will have a slightly different experience because the levels will look probably a little bit different, you’ll meet different kind of monsters than I do, and the weather will be different, and so on and so forth.
Sounds like it's shaping up to be Borderlands with dick jokes and better combat.

I played a MP third person shooter that had a tile system. It was basically gears of war for PC. It had zero advertisement or hype built around it and almost no one bought the game and it died after like a week. But the tile system was pretty cool and I don't think it was done before. It looked like this:

And you voted on what pieces got put in. I don't remember exactly how it worked. I got the game for free.

i like the idea, assuming it's done right. we have the reboot, we have Doom... don't see the need for another old school FPS right away

game looks great to me
sad to see negative knee jerk reactions here tbh
the devs have proven themselves enough

Now this is interesting. Could very well turn out to be super cool, and as long as coop is a thing as advertised it'll probably be great with a friend.

I understand that hating on procedural generations the thing now after NMS .... but can anyone explain what exactly is proceduraly generated here??? The loot??

See Mr. Tibbs' post above. Essentially, levels are composed of tiles and those that do not contain a story-related event are randomly generated. The game isn't procedurally generated in the generally-understood sense that there's effectively no end, so it's not quite like, say, Strafe. In other words, the procedural generation system serves to fill in the blanks in each level rather than outright drive the level design a la NMS.

yet this thread was made before NMS's release. people already have enough experience with boring proceduraly generated games

thx for a person like me who finsihed both SW and Hard Reset couple times this is realyl good news , was worried its something weird , but I guess word procedural gen. triggers some distasteful reactions in some people just by itself even before reading the actual details on how its used

I have no idea what's going on this stream right now but I was able to see some gameplay Total Biscuit did and this looks great. Definitely throwing this on my watch list.

i still think it looks cool, the combat looks satisfying and its more like a hint of procedural instead of all out. we'll see if multi is a detractor to the single experience always a valid concern.

There needs to be a pretty compelling reason for me to pick up a loot game, I was really looking forward to a Shadow Warrior sequel but this really isn't what I was hoping for! The proc-gen stuff, sure, I can take that. But the whole loot and equipment cycle (and damage numbers! Ugh!) just doesn't really compel me. I'll probably check this out on a sale rather than day-one. The combat still looks really fun though.

It's not a "knee jerk" reaction to not be interested in a game that is basically changing genres. Good or not I'm out because the new stuff is not what got me into the first game.
