Why Is Steam So Slow?

So, I'm trying to download HL2 tonight over steam and it seems to be going really slow. Even worse I exited out of the window half way through then began again and it didn't even resume where it left off! It started at the beginning again! ARGHHHHHHH

Steam is a test to all CS/DoD/HL players ... How much do you REALLY love Valve? Are you willing to put up with all that shit (slow response, network problems, friends/server list not working) to play the game(s) you love?

It's like being an abused spouse in a bad relationship. I want to leave .... but I stay because Steam and I have kids together. So I take all the abuse. :(

PS.
I am sorry Valve/Steam. I still love you .. take me back

steam isn't that bad. at least I don't have to check some site for patches all the time.

You heard it here first! 'update' buttons never existed!

wrong forum, BTW...i think =\

The only problem I've had with it so far was the buddy system.. DMczaf and I would play some CS:S and his status always changes to offline. :P

Steam is probably responsible for my HL2 stutter as well, if what they say about the warezed version is true.

I really enjoy Half-Life 2, so I tolerate Steam, but I'm sure more games will be adopting this or a similar technology in the future and it's slowly becoming another one of those little things about PC gaming that annoys me...

Yea I never have problems with Steam, it's annoying that friends doesn't always work, but I don't really use it anyways, then again, perhaps I would if it did work all the time :)

Steam didn't start downloading it all again, it just reset the progress slider to 0% and carried on from where it was before. The progress slider indicates how much as a percentage of "hl2 you don't have" you have remaining to download before you can start playing. If you tell it you want to play when its at 99% it will still do a normal 100% slider just each % will count as 0.01% of the entire hl2 download.
You can get an accurate reading on how much of hl2 you have by either going to the monitor window or in the games window right click on hl2 and go to properties.

If you are going to want to play Day of Defeat: Source ... buy the silver package online. Buying it retail does NOT give you DoD:S.

Although Day of Defeat probably won't be out for another 2-3 months anyways ... so I'm not sure if it matters.

is online a good way to buy, or should I just buy the box from a store?

Here's the thing about buying a boxed copy: You can actually resell it on eBay if that's something you normally do. Just open a Yahoo mail account for it, and when you go to sell, include the e-mail account and Steam account you attached to it.

If you buy online, you're pretty much screwed. Your Credit Card number is locked to that account and if you sell it on eBay, they could unlock new content when it become available (Which, according to the TOS, you're responsible for others). Wish I'd gone this route since I'm not a big CS or DoD fan and Steam Half-Life was disappointing. Plus the boxed copy is on sale a ton lateley so this just makes it even more economical if you're a CAG.
