In past generations, it was easy to pick a favorite game, a "game of all time", but this generation really has some milestone games. Yes, we have been plagued with sequels, but with sequels comes the benefit of improved gameplay and leassons learned. This generation seemed a bit shorter than past, but the AAA titles have been excellent.
Metroid Prime / Metroid Prime Echoes:
Metroid finally resurfaced in 3D and Retro Studios, a newborn company, defied all odds and created this stunning reincarnation of Metroid and nearly flawless at that.
Resident Evil 4
Just as everyone thought the series had become stale and boring, Capcom delayed, revised and recrated this game at least 4 time and created the best damn survival horror game ever, and the prettiest too.
Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater
Rambo meets James Bond is the best way to describe this one. As much as I hated Metal Gear Solid 2, this game was fantastic. The multiple ways of defeating the stages, the incredible boss fights ("the end" is perhaps the greatest and most realistic fight ever) and one of the best and well thought out stories in a videogame. Brilliant and awesome ending.
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (and GTA3, Vice City)
I don't think anyone would have suspected a game of this magnitude to come out this generation during the psx/n64 days. The game is HUGE, incredibly fun and there is so much to do. Really set the standard for many games this generation and I truly think this game will be the game that will benefit the most next generation.
There are tons of other excellent games too and I'm not going to sit here and list them all. This was one hell of a ride and it will finish with a nice bang when Zelda comes out later this year and the next generation begins with the Xbox 2.
