Why would anyone in their right minds want this generation to end?

In past generations, it was easy to pick a favorite game, a "game of all time", but this generation really has some milestone games. Yes, we have been plagued with sequels, but with sequels comes the benefit of improved gameplay and leassons learned. This generation seemed a bit shorter than past, but the AAA titles have been excellent.

Metroid Prime / Metroid Prime Echoes:

Metroid finally resurfaced in 3D and Retro Studios, a newborn company, defied all odds and created this stunning reincarnation of Metroid and nearly flawless at that.

Resident Evil 4

Just as everyone thought the series had become stale and boring, Capcom delayed, revised and recrated this game at least 4 time and created the best damn survival horror game ever, and the prettiest too.

Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater

Rambo meets James Bond is the best way to describe this one. As much as I hated Metal Gear Solid 2, this game was fantastic. The multiple ways of defeating the stages, the incredible boss fights ("the end" is perhaps the greatest and most realistic fight ever) and one of the best and well thought out stories in a videogame. Brilliant and awesome ending.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (and GTA3, Vice City)
I don't think anyone would have suspected a game of this magnitude to come out this generation during the psx/n64 days. The game is HUGE, incredibly fun and there is so much to do. Really set the standard for many games this generation and I truly think this game will be the game that will benefit the most next generation.

There are tons of other excellent games too and I'm not going to sit here and list them all. This was one hell of a ride and it will finish with a nice bang when Zelda comes out later this year and the next generation begins with the Xbox 2.

Add God of War to that list and I'll agree with ya :)

It's still shrinkwrapped so I can't add it just yet. Waiting for this weekend to try it out. But anyway, it is kinda included in my post:

thanks to backwards compatiblity, the transition to the next gen will seem more seamless. We've already seen this with gameboy games and ps1->ps2, we'll see it with GC/Rev and PS2/PS3. Sucks to be Microsoft though. :lol

So I don't really care about prolonging this generation. I mean what's the point when we have backwards compatibility? buying the next systems will feel more like upgrading than abandoning the previous gen.

I can't wait to start rubbing the touch screen on my gyroscoptic controller to play RE4 on the Rev while viewing the game through a hologram!

As for microsoft, I'd assume you'll be able to play xbox games on the Xbox 360..
via microtransactions!

Why would anyone in their right minds want this generation to end?

Because Playstation graphics are ugly.

Actually I hope low framerates and loading times disappear more than anything, but that is doubtful. Poor GC did more things wrong than right, but the low loading times and high framerates were fabulous.

I'd prefer to blame the fuckers at Microsoft, thanks.

I feels good to say, I told you so!

Not you directly, but any moron expecting Microsoft to change it's business tactics. :lol

This generation is proving very interesting, and some of the decisions we're seeing to still bring big name games out for the PS2 speaks volumes. Developers will go where the userbase, read: money, is.

With great games still coming out for the PS2, I can easily see a budget price PS2 bitch slapping both the PS3 (due to limited supply around launch) and Xenon (the bitter taste of being rooked the first time) in the sales charts.

Hopefully the PS3 backward compatibility will also accomodate on-line play, so you can seamlessly purchase a PS3 and continue playing PSU on it.

ROX!

Playstation has momentum! :P

i was just talking to my friend about that. i mean- i am still working through ps1 games. i am definitely not ready to move on. especially when brand new games are coming out that look great and are still not using the hardware to their full capacity.

Okay, we've got three very strong and experienced competitors throwing everything they've got into making their version of the "ultimate console." Right now you have legacy companies like SquareEnix and EA developing CG quality gems for all of us to devour, while at the same time the crappy companies will be forced to go away. The games you are playing today are simply training for what's ahead in the next few years. We are finally at the point where we can seriously challange film as the dominant form of entertainment.

It doesn't seem any different to any other generation to me.

I think it's time to move on, though it really should be Sony rather than MS. Won't really matter in the end.

I just need a robust, online Winning Eleven game that runs at 720p or 1080i with no slowdown to be happy. That's all it comes down to.

Bring on the next generation.

The thing with all of these arguments over whether or not it's too early for a new generation of consoles is that the console manufacturers don't dictate the market to gamers, we dictate it to them. Vote with your dollar. If you don't want to deal with new consoles, don't buy them. If publishers see that the money is still with the current generation of consoles, that's where development will gravitate. We may get hit by initial surge of sexy new games with very pretty pictures, but if few people buy them, a lot of bean counters that make the decisions at game companies will reconsider their stance.

Personally, I think it's a bit too fast for a new generation of consoles to come out. Plenty of people are saying that once we see the graphics on the new systems we'll be line up around the block for the units. Well, I remember looking at the graphics on The Bouncer on the PS2, arguable the prettiest game on the market at the time, and guess what, the game was pretty awful.

Visuals don't matter as much as some people in the industry would like for us to believe. There was that whole schpeel from one industry pundit a while back that more or less equated people who say that graphics don't matter with snobs. That whole argument makes no sense. If we were to compare this to, say, the dating scene, it would be like saying that looks are all that matter. I'm all for a pretty lady, but if there isn't anything going on upstairs, it just doesn't matter.

There is just too much emphasis being placed on the superficial at this point. If the console makers can prove that their new systems will have more than a pretty face and a cute smile come E3, then kudos, but at this point I'm skeptical. (Though I'd love to be proven wrong) :\

Because games have hit a speed bump (more like a speed chasm). Other than RE4, the games you mentioned are either years old or rehashes. Metroid, MGS and GTA were great the first time... years ago. Then they splayed themselves across the table for some whoring.

When you get a nice, original game this generation, several rehashes follow. VJ, Katamari, Splinter Cell, Warrior Within, Pikmin, Paper Mario, Halo, Gran Tourismo, etc., etc. Hopefully Nintendo's next hardware gives everyone a fresh start.

I love how people think that developers will just all of a sudden forget how to make great games once the new systems are released. Yea, i'm sure every game that will be released on Xenon and PS3 will just be souless derivative crap with pretty graphics.

You know what, this gen has been my favorite of all time. And i fully expect next gen to surpass this one. There will also be sequals, lots of them. Just like there was this gen and just like there was the gen before that and the gen before that. Some of the most fun i've had to date are from sequals and franchises. But there will also be new IP's as well and you can bet your ass that for everyone of the new IP's that is good and sells a little it will spawn sequals.

Next gen is coming and i couldn't be happier. But if it makes any of you feel superior to huddle around your old SNES, Genesis, PS1, etc... and spout off about how you remember the glory days and how so and so has ruined gaming, that's cool. I'll be huddled around my Xenon and PS3 playing Halo 3 and MGS 4 with a huge grin and my eyes wide with wonderment at how the hell developers used next gens power to better games that i thought couldn't be topped.

It happened to me with the transtion from 8 to 16 bit, 16 to 32, and 32 to 128 bit and i fully expect this trend to continue.

Sequels can be good, but nothing beats that first new kind of game. Metroid Prime is a fantastic example. Echoes just runs through the numbers other than the multiplayer mode. Why should I have to wait four years for the next interesting game out of Retro (after Prime)? Viewtiful Joe is another one. Splinter Cell, Sands of Time, Halo... Right now, for example, I want to play Killer 7, not Killer 7 Resurrection.

I can't understand why Sony would ever want this generation to end. Thir hardware sales last month (and to a lesser extent Microsoft's) showed that there is still potentially a lot of life left in the consoles since both were up on same month last year. Software sales for the PS2 are probably still at their peak and this christams should be phenominal. I think Microsoft is taking a massive risk but they may have no choice. Q4 2006 sounds like the right time to start a new gen because thats when revenue should start to drop off but perhaps only in anticipation of new consoles.

GO GAMECUBE GO PS2!

Remember all those people that went crazy with the upgrade cycles like GeForce 256 --> GeForce 2 GTS --> GeForce 3 etc. ?

Half of them gave up the "too expensive" PC gaming and bought Xboxes.

There's your answer.

Why not? With a relatively low expense (I guess between 300 and 400 bucks), you'll still be able to play great games but on new, better hardware. The same developers that made this gen so great will still be there providing us with their games: we're not saying that everything good about this gen will die with it, but it will simply improve, I'm sure for better. So I really don't see where's the problem. Are you scared to renew your hardware after 4-5 years of good usage?

There are so many good games this gen I have yet to play...it'll probably last me over a year into next gen.

I think I'll be ready once I see stuff for PS3, Xbox 2, and Revolution. Currently, all I'm looking forward to are two Fire Emblems, a nice handful of Xbox games, FFXII, KHII, and Zelda. Then there's all the games I'm just catching up on like Soul Calibur II, and all the potential hits that are to come like Phantasy Star Universe. I realize it'll have been a very long gen once the PS3 hits, but I'm not ready for it to end. Not yet.

Im ready for next gen, stupid idiots trying to hold MS+Sony back....... fuck'em

In many ways I feel like I've almost totally missed out on a lot of what this gen has to offer. I own all 3 consoles, by my game library is small. I own most of the biggest titles, but there are some even big titles that I don't, and lots of others I was interested in but never got round to playing. So...not sure if I'd prefer to catch up on this gen, or cut my losses and embrace the next gen as a blank slate, ASAP!

Don't forget:

Half-Life 2
With a phenomenal physics engine, stunning graphics, and action movie- like sequences throughout the whole game, this dominated and redefined the strength of first-person shooters. Even though Valve took about 5 years, all was proved when it finally released. Not only do you get this, but Counter-Strike Source is a whole other story.

My favorite game of all time.

Who's holding Sony back? Seems MS is trying to get a jump on things more than anything.

MS is in a position in which they don't care about where to release new titles. They lose money now so nothing changes if they lose money on a new system that has chances of being less of a money-sucker than the previous one.
Add to this the fact that XBOX game catalog is almost dead when it comes to AAA titles and you'll have a legion of XBOX supporters ready for next gen and blaming all the other owners of "slowdowning" the console market... Other owners that still have games btw to enjoy this year and the following but well...

M$ is a joke in this market, they threw hig-end hardware at us and a crappy online chat/stat tracker and ppl ate it up, now they wanna dump it early and make everyone buy the next box with all this chatter about pay-for play services on it?

Fuck that

Bullshit , I've played just as much, if not more quality titles on Xbox than the other 2. What a stupid fucking statement. You think Xbox fans are not looking foward to SPlintercell 3? Jade Empire? Conkers Live and Reloaded? Spikeout Xtreme? Phantom Dust? Theres plenty of quality games to look foward to...

and blaming all the other owners of "slowdowning" the console market... Other owners that still have games btw to enjoy this year and the following but well...

A lot of people are looking foward to new technology, no matter what company is behind it, look around, check out the spec threads for PS3,X360 and Rev. Its one of the most exciting times to be a gamer, seeing what new features developers are trying to introduce and getting somesort of idea about where gaming in general is headed. I've seen what this gen has to offer, its been a fantastic ride, but now im ready to move on.

How exactly would they make you buy the next system?

And as to the topic...why does the gen end when a new set of systems hit the market? It's not like new games will cease to be made on this older set of systems when the newer ones arrive.
