Achievements/Brag system
Think about all of the myriad accomplishments on Nintendo games that only you know about. Did you ever:
Beat Zelda or Metroid for NES in under 2 hours and get everything?
Beat either of them without dying once?
TKO Mike Tyson or Kid Dream on Punchout!?
Beat that one asshole at the end of Strider for NES?
Smack the snot out of Dr. Wiley's pet on Megaman without pausing the game?
Beat Solomon's Key without continuing?
Beat Gyruss by Konami on NES without continuing?
My point is, that these are real achievements that are probably burned into your memories but nobody else knows about them. They are probably a hell of a lot more significant and noteworthy accomplishments than say... getting 10/10 achievement points just for getting fifty melee kills in whatever FPS shooter of the month people are playing right now.
What If you re-did all of your accomplishments from older games and got reedemable points for them to put towards the purchase of whatever Nintendo merchandise you wanted? I think it would it would drives sales of e-shop games and drive awareness of all Nintendo products on a macro level also.
Just something to chew on.
I would absolutely love something like that. Nintendo really needs to work on Virtual Console in general.
EMULATOR UPGRADES
+ As it stands, I have to switch my TV mode just so the games aren't stretched. Should be an easy enough fix. Just have it assume widescreen or give a toggle option on the U menu itself.
+ Presentation. I'd love to see the original box cover along with release information by year and the original back-of-the-box text displayed. Perhaps an option to see the original instruction manual scan on the touch screen?
+ GamePad compatibility. Should be a given, but VC will hopefully include a gamepad only option.
+ Filters and custom borders for games (or at least game consoles) would be nice too. I'd like to see my NES games have some old school CRT border surrounding them as an option. Or Mario 1 to be surrounded with appropriate artwork.
ACHIEVEMENTS
+ Sounds like Nintendo's not doing achievements with the traditional gamer score. But perhaps each game can be updated to have a MiiVerse page?
+ I think a fun idea would be to have each achievement and purchase to be worth coins that you can use to upgrade your Mii or something similar. The MiiVerse IS by the Animal Crossing guy, so I'm actually surprised to not see this sort of set up. Visit your friends' virtual house. See that he has a Double Dragon II poster on the wall, which he got for purchasing the game. He beat it on hard mode so you see a figurine on his book case. Rummage through his games and even "borrow" via a timed demo.
+ At the very least, if there's no gamer score, I do hope there's an easy way to view accomplishments of some sort (both VC and U) without having to boot up the game. Example: Even Wii Sports Resort and Excite Truck had an achievement system. Let me scroll through my game list to see my progress, and also through my friends to see where they're at.
+ I do realize in many circumstances, VC games being updated would require a bit of work, or possibly even reprogramming. Especially for the cool ideas you presented. But as silly as it sounds, if I do beat a hard old school game like Punch-Out, I'd like the system to give me some kind of reward, even if it's a mild pat on the back. Or just something to prove to myself that I did it, or remind myself that I am 90% there and need to finish that particular game up.
Just as it is, everything seems like "here's your ROM dump!" with little to none of the Nintendo "touch" I expect from the company. With the VC prices being as high as they are, a little effort would be nice. Nintendo could update their VC stuff and hope / demand 3rd parties follow suit. It wouldn't take a huge team or have to be done all at once. Just have an "optimized for Wii U" logo in the shop for the titles that are ready.
